1 Zion s Voice Zion Lutheran Church Wooster, Ohio Church Staff Rev. Ann Paynter Pastor Jeffrey & Daphne Dexter Parish Musicians Marianna Lehr Bookkeeper Anne Henkle Administra ve Assistant Lisa Yeater Custodian Cindy Hauser Nursery A endant Courtney Nolt Youth Ministry Director 2016 Church Council President: Bill Dannley Vice President: Dave Picking Secretary: Susan Mykrantz Treasurer: Bre Burkey Endowment Treasurer: Sco Schroer Financial Secretary: Judi Stock Todd Hauser Gloria Mackey Mary McMillen Tim Nolt Josephine Wright Pamela Yarnell Karolyn Miller Randy Wengerd Julie Mennes Susan Taylor Be Disciples, Make Disciples July 2016 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As I sit down to write this, we are hearing tragic news of the death of some fi y people and the wounding of fi y more in Orlando, Florida. This shocking event is just another link in a long chain of violence that has plagued our country for too many years. Perhaps more upse ng s ll, is the sense that because these events are happening all too o en, we are becoming numb to them. Surely something should be done to change this trend. We cannot accept this as the new normal. I will leave it up to your good judgment to decide what government response is needed. You do not need your pastor to tell you how to vote or develop public policy. Certainly, my ideas about how to solve this problem are just some among many. I am not an expert in this field. S ll, we can and should spend me in prayer and study about this problem. Our Chris an faith teaches that each one of us is made in God s image, all life is valuable and God loves all of us. Can you imagine Jesus saying that some lives are important and some are not? Our Chris an faith calls us to a lifestyle of prayer and peaceful living with our brothers and sisters. St. Paul said, But now you must get rid of all these things: anger, passion and all hateful feelings. (Colossians 3:8) Our Chris an faith ins lls values of humility and service and a belief that Jesus made Himself open to death SO THAT we might have new life in Him. Please find refreshment in these beau ful summer days and do whatever you have to so that the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding will keep your heart and mind as in Christ Jesus Our Lord. In His love, Pastor Ann Dear Members of Zion Lutheran Church, Your check for $4,040 arrived and we at First Lutheran, Lorain cannot say thank-you enough for your though ulness and generosity. This is a wonderful gesture on your part and a reminder of our oneness in the Body of Christ. Thanks also for the hospitality you showed to our members who joined you for worship and a meal. They could not say enough about how they were welcomed. They brought a bulle n to us and it seems that, even in these changing mes, ministry is alive and well in Wooster. Blessings to you and please keep us in your prayers as we move into building phase of this journey we are on. Yours in Christ, Pastor Jimmy Madsen Zion s Voice 1 July 2016

We have a great me and would like you to be part of our group. Thank You Very Much! Dear Zion, Thank you for sharing my special day with me. The entire day was very special and I really enjoyed all the congratulations and other well wishes as I walk this path with and in Christ. Thanks to the Sunday School kids who made the hearts and flowers. I really appreciated it. Thanks again especially to Pastor Ann for making my confirma on very memorable. Sincerely Madison Schroer A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Glory Walkers Relay for Life Team. It makes our mission so worth while to have the par cipa on of so much of the congregaon behind us. Whether your dona ng dimes for the water bo les, a ending numerous dining to donates, buying or selling candy bars, a ending the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, purchasing Tastefully Simple Products, sponsoring a track sign, tributes for a luminaria, it all adds up. Our team was able to donate $5, to American Cancer Society this year. We look forward to future cures for cancer so hopefully no one has to be faced with cancer. We welcome anyone interested in joining the Relay Team and again Thank You to all who so generously supported us. Reaching Out in Love Cindy Nolt & Tina Ramsier Team Captains Many of you know about the tragic death of Jonathan Murray. Jonathan was the father/step-father to six children who have been part of our church family. Our members have asked how Zion might help. Church Council discussed this at their June mee ng and decided on a dual approach. First we will receive an ini al offering un l July 17 th. The lump sum of this amount will be offered to the children s mother, Ashley to meet immediate expenses. Then an account called The Family Fund will be established at a local bank. Dividends from that account will go to the family on a regular basis. This is similar to what was done for the Seven Sisters Fund in the past. Please be careful to mark your dona ons clearly. If you are dona ng to the ini al gi, please mark your envelope or memo your check Murray Gi. If you are contribu ng to the long term Family Fund, please mark it as Family Fund. May our generous caring be a blessing to this family and to us. Zion s Voice 2 July 2016
3 Family Ministry At Zion Children's Ministry News If you have Bibles, commentaries, concordances, or Bible study guides that you no longer use, please deposit them in the tub in Room 200 for delivery to Montgomery Community Church in Cincinna by Sunday, July 3. For over 35 years its congrega on has collected and shipped Bible materials all over the world. We have a number of Bibles collected several years ago as a Children's Ministry mission project and want to add to that before taking them to Cincy. If you will be headed that way in July or August and would be willing to drop off our dona on, please see Linda Halterman. Everything will be packed in small boxes, and she will gladly help you load them into your vehicle. Planning is underway for our next Sunday School year. We are purchasing a new curriculum, Whirl, that should suit our children and families well. Weekly lessons are based on the Lec onary and church year. This will allow us to link Sunday School, Pastor Ann's Children's Message, Children's Church, and Family Resources in order to build understanding and connec ons through a variety of experiences and iteraons. The materials are much more kid-friendly and easier for teachers to use. Teacher prepara on will be minimal. As with all efforts toward excellence, it will take a village/church family to build upon this year's Sunday School renewal efforts. To put it bluntly, we need teachers or teacher teams so that our instruc on fits our kids' developmental levels and readiness for learning. Our plan is to have four age groups: Preschool (ages 2 and 3), Early Learners (age 4 and Kindergarten), Elementary Learners (Grades 1-4), and Middle School (Grades 5-8). Please consider volunteering to teach. We can be crea ve in how we work around your schedule. For instance, you and a friend could alternate weeks. You might commit to teaching for a quarter. Perhaps you'd be willing to be a subs tute assigned to fill in for a specific teacher. Most important, we want kids to build rela onships with adults in a consistent fashion. In par cular, our younger kids need a predictable rou ne and familiar expecta ons as they learn how to "do church". Pastor Ann will teach Catechism to the Middle School class, probably twice monthly, so she needs a partner for that age group to teach on alternate weeks.. Courtney Nolt and Linda Halterman will each take a class but need subs tutes. That leaves one other group that definitely needs your help. You can pick the age level. SEE HOW EASY THIS IS! TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS! Get in touch with Linda Halterman with ques ons or to devote yourself to faith forma on efforts at Zion. Our children need you! Outdoor Worship Sunday, July 24 th 9:00 a.m. Join us at the Secrest Arboretum Amphitheater and nearby pavilion. Rain or Shine! We will worship in the enclosed pavilion if it is raining. Bring an umbrella for shade! Fellowship hour in the pavilion following worship. Shu le service provided from the parking lot on Mill Road and Williams Road (see map). Shu les begin running at 8:15 a.m. and the last shu le before the worship service will leave at 8:50 a.m. Shu les will also run following the worship service. If you like to bake, we need muffins, coffee cake, or cookies for the fellowship hour. Sign up at the display to indicate what you will bring. Amphitheater Pavilion Parking Zion s Voice 3 July 2016

Susan Hilbert will be joining Courtney Nolt and Linda Halterman to look at ideas to rejuvenate the Sunday School and Children s Ministry. New Business: The Endowment Commi ee is not func oning at the present me. Following general discussion, it was suggested that a commi ee be formed to prepare a plan for dispersing funds. A mo on was passed to form a Reformation Concept Committee. Sugges ons for the Good of Zion: The next mee ng was moved to June 13 so that Pastor Ann could a end the mee ng.
