We gave blue slips of paper and invited you to return those anonymously. Several of you were kind enough to reply and those replies were very interesting. Of course the goal was to begin a conversation that would help to mold Zion s welcome. Clearly, Jesus was creating a community of love. We are still called to live out hospitality, especially in our churches. Three quarters of the replies indicated that the responders had always felt welcome here. For them this is a church home. They live out their faith life from this home base. They get support from loved ones here. They do not feel estranged or excluded. Of course I asked people who were present in worship, so the audience is friendly. One reply hinted that the author might feel more comfortable if they knew more about the Bible. This is true for many of us. (Frankly, we could all delve deeply into the biblical well forever and never come up saturated! Our Tuesday Bible study groups will resume at 11 am and 7 pm beginning September 9 th.) Another mentioned that there is some discomfort when you first become a member. Who will my friends be? With what ministries should I become involved? (Any extroverts feel a calling to mentor new members?) Thank you for your replies. Now, how can we connect with our neighbors and friends who were not in worship, so that we can better make them feel a part of our life together? Let s keep talking and thinking about this. In Christ s love Bishop Allende to be ordained September 13! Pastor Ann You are all invited to attend the installation of Bishop Abraham Allende on Saturday September 13 th at 2 p.m. at St. Paul s Episcopal church 1361 W Market St in Akron. This worship experience will be uplifting! Don t miss it! Zion s Voice 1 September 2014

4 Zion s Endowment Committee would like to help you help Zion! The Endowment Committee in conjunction with the Wayne County Community Foundation, Thrivent Financial, and Ron Rehm would like to educate and inspire the members of Zion in their current and future planned giving strategies that will hopefully include Zion s Endowment. We will be holding four workshops on estate planning that will focus on the various options available that will maximize your gifts now and/or upon your death. Most people do not realize the many different options available and how important estate planning is to all individuals regardless of their financial standing. Estate planning is not just for the Rich. Each workshop will consist of a devotion and a short presentation followed by a question and answer session. No individual estate planning will occur, no financial products will be sold, and no one will solicit donations or pledges the workshops are strictly informational. The Endowment Committee ultimately hopes that the members of Zion will remember their spiritual home on earth as they plan for their future, but that is strictly a personal choice. The workshops are scheduled for Tuesday September 16 th at 1:00 and 6:30 and Thursday September 25 th at 1:00 and 6:30. Sign-up sheets will be available in Rooms 100 and 200 or you may call the Church office. Please contact Scott Schroer at (330) with any questions. Family Ministry At Zion Reformation Festival Meeting We will be holding a Reformation Day Festival planning meeting on September 22. This will be held in Room 200 at 6:00 p.m. This meeting is to plan events for Reformation Sunday. Please come help us plan a wonderful celebration of this important event in the life of the church. Sunday School Happenings Sunday school is back in full swing! Come join us for spiritual education as we learn about prayer! Sunday School starts at 9:30 a.m. We will have a pizza lunch on Sunday, September 14th at noon for parents of children from nursery age through high school. We would like to start a discussion on what they would like to like to see Zion provide in the way of spiritual education and youth activities. Young adults are welcome to join in as well. If you cannot make the meeting, please give your suggestions to Del Smarr. Live Nativity Meeting Marriage Encounter Weekend Enjoy a weekend of discovery together on a Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekend will be offered October 17-19, 2014 at the Fleming Falls Retreat Center at Camp Mowana in Mansfield, OH. Registrations must be received by September 17. Lutheran Marriage Encounter is an affiliate of Worldwide Marriage Encounter. We will have a meeting on September 8 at 6:00 p.m. Room 200 to plan this year s Live Nativity. Let us know what you would like to see and help us make it better than last year s event. We encourage you to sign up for a part. Thanks to Zion! The response to the Pee Wee Hollow Scout Camp s requests for funding for a land survey was great! All $6000 was raised and the camp is now able to go on with their good work. Zion s giving to this project was strong. Thank you for your support. Zion s Voice 4 September 2014
