We have a unique history, a fascina ng set of strengths, and a spirit of faith that rises to meet the challenges of our ministry. One of the ways that we are unique is in the strength of our fight against cancer. Everyone who reads this should know that our community of faith is willing and able to help cancer pa ents and their loved ones. Thankfully, cancer is a part of modern life that is changing. A diagnosis of cancer is no longer a death sentence. Although it is all too common, treatments for cancer are becoming more effec ve. My father is a cancer survivor. We s ll rejoice in that. My mother-in-law succumbed to cancer in January. Although we mourn our loss, we are grateful for the extra me that good treatment made possible for her. For many years Zion has had Stephen ministers who have offered spiritual and emo onal support for those who are figh ng cancer. The listening ear is a ached to a healing heart. Those who feel heard can o en find the path to healing more easily. Zion is blessed by their work. If you become a cancer pa ent, consider sharing your concerns with a Stephen minister. Our Zion Prayer Chain is blessed with prayer warriors who pray for cancer paents every single day. Their steadfast dedica on to prayer has been a blessing to many. The Bible promises that commitment to prayer is worth the effort and we have seen this. Just ask and we will accompany you. Zion has a very ac ve and successful Relay for Life Team. For years they have raised money for cancer research and treatment. As we have worked with those figh ng cancer and their loved ones, we have been blessed with a sense of the goodness of life and the reality of the promises of God. Thank you to those who have supported or been part of the Relay Team. You can see this work as a poignant chapter in our Chris an ministry. Be well, BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY Pastor Ann Laura Newberry-Yokley from United Way will offer a program for leaders and community members that illuminates the causes of poverty and suggests strategies for elimina ng the restraints of scarcity on Wednesday evening, June 8 th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in Room 200 at Zion. The program is free and will surprise par cipants with new ways of seeing the root causes of poverty and how people can successfully leave the class into which they were born. All are welcome! 3 Family Ministry At Zion June is the month we celebrate Father s Day! It is a good me to give thanks for all of our fathers. More and more children are growing up without a father s influence and support. To raise healthy children a father s presence is important. Here are ten hints for you fathers why not practice one or more of them this month? 1. Pray for wisdom that the values you currently hold are values that are pleasing to God. 2. Talk openly with your child about your values. 3. Remember there is more to happiness than the balance in your checkbook. 4. Share your faith with your children daily. 5. Help your child see himself as a valuable child of God. 6. Seek excellence in all you do. 7. Teach your children to love life. 8. Guide your children in respecting all that God has created. 9. Help your children think through possible outcomes and make choices on their own. 10. Understand your job of sharing the important things in life and what makes them special to you and your family. Don t force your values on them. They will claim for themselves what is important to them. Your Faith Community Church Team Becky, Brent and Kathy Downtown VBS volunteers are needed. Zion is in charge of registra on for Downtown Vaca on Bible School on June from 8:30am-9:30am. We need 4 volunteers each day to help with registra on. If you can help with registra on(even if it is only 1 day), please contact Courtney Nolt at , or cnolt@zionlutheranwooster.org.
