Colorado Photography John Fielder Scribe: Mark Silvanic Our speaker, John Fielder, a 35 year nature photographer from Summit County, showed amazing slides of his work often accompanied by music to a packed room. This certainly was something to see in person. Today's scribe cannot accurately portray this visual event. John has and continues to travel the world and for him, Colorado is the place to photograph. He has published over 40 books. We had the opportunity to purchase his books and have him sign them. He promised 30% of the sales would be returned to our club.
John has spent many decades skiing the back county, spending nights in the 100 or so huts in the high country of CO. To get the best shot, John is up well before twilight and skis to a location he picked out the day before. Once in place he captures the dawn and the early morning shots. He often is back out to catch the setting sun and skis back to the hut in the dark.
John's latest book is about winter in CO and although every season brings many photographs, he likes winter best. John told stories of taking his family on trips years ago and how he continues to ski and photographic despite having knee replacement three times on one leg. He is convinced he can do more with his cobalt titanium knee than when he was in his 30's. Between his stories of his trips to take the photos, he showed slides often put to music. He then told us about his photography courses in Summit county and explained the basics of photography by using his photos as examples. The next one is Mar in Steamboat Springs for $850. Color in Winter-Search for color, rocks leaves, etc to show the contrast. Form and Texture-Winter presents many chances with fog, snow, ice, and snowing. Perspective-Dominant feature in the bottom of the frame or lines drawing the viewer's eyes to an object.
John told a story about his famous zig-zag fence photo. In order to take the photo he had to trespass on Ralph Lauren's ranch for years without permission. He once met Ralph Lauren by chance at a gas station where Ralph was with his $1M Bulgatti. He told Ralph that he was the photographer on his land without permission, but he was always wearing Ralph's "Polo Brand" when he was doing it. He asked Ralph if he could take a video of him driving away in his Bulgatti. Ralph said no, but he grabbed a shot with his phone.
View- Big Scenic, close-up or the in between without sky. Direction of light- Use back lighting or side lighting. Asymmetrical design-create artistic tension by putting the main object one third from the edge of the frame.
John said winter offers a great time to convert photos into black and white, proved it with another series of photos put to music. John closed his presentation with observations on the need to, and the importance of protecting our natural resources in Colorado. This was a great show that we all enjoyed. Happy Trails! See you Saturday at: Lewis Palmer D-38 Administration building (a.k.a. Big Red) 146 Jefferson Street, Monument, CO Please use the West or North entrances!
