Wayne was having some blood chemistry issues early in the week and then suffered a stroke. He was in a hospital in Denver and has returned home, but he is now in hospice care. RF asked that we keep Wayne and RaeJean in our prayers.

3 Thanks to Dennis Beasley Upcoming Programs Jim Clemans thanked God for his presence during the loss of recent club members and again with this upsetting news of Wayne Claybaugh. Jim asked for continued blessings on the families of Steve Plank and Frank Matthews, and certainly for RaeJean in the coming difficult days and weeks. Jim noted that D-Day in the WWII liberation of Western Europe began 73 years ago at Normandy and asked that our prayers be heard for the thousands that fought in the battle and those that died. ANNOUNCEMENTS Club business: Bonnie Nasser for photographs Mark Zeiger said we made $6, on our "must go" Bingo night last week! Pete Peterson provided a 4th of July parade update. Major participants include the Renaissance Festival, Air Force flyover, Air Force Band, Littleton High School Band and hopefully Bagpipes. He said we need help with: 1) Banners and signs; 2) Parade marshals (see Gordan Sill); 3) South-end security (see Mike Luginbuhl); 4) Post Office transportation (see Dennis Daugherty). There is a standing meeting every Thursday morning at Wesley Owens at 10:30. There will be one more big organizational meeting at Woodmoor Country Club, Thursday, June 22 at 10:00 am. A Senior Leadership Program meeting immediately followed our meeting on Saturday. The Rocky Mountain Kiwanis conference is from August 3-6 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. 7 The Peak Challenge 14er hike to support the Griffith Center will be in mid August, likely at Uncompahgre Peak. Our best athlete, Jim Murphy, has details. 12 Griffith Center for Children Barb Richie Scribe: Paul Gorley Barb Ritchie, CEO of the Griffith Center for Children "Chins Up," presented the program to explain how the Center fulfills its mission of "Strengthening Colorado Communities One Family at a Time." Griffith Center for children began in 1927 in Denver. The founder, Emily Griffith, was a respected educator who believed that every child deserves positive experiences and opportunities to prepare him or her to live a productive life. She began taking orphaned and delinquent boys into her home and with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Denver, built the first Emily Griffith Home for Boys. Barb explained that the organization had a rural property in the foothills near Larkspur, but it became too expensive to maintain and operate, so it moved into Colorado Springs. They have provided numerous programs to help students in need find a sense of purpose and direction in life. They currently operate a school in Colorado Springs that has approximately 50 students who otherwise had found it difficult to progress in a normal classroom environment. The Griffith Center also offers a program to help lower student truancy rates in the regular schools by means of a "walking bus" where volunteers walk with students who might otherwise be afraid to walk on their own to school. They also provide a service of

13 supervised intervention where counselors can be with children to meet with a parent in a split or divorced parental situation. Clients come to them through Social Services and there is a very active foster care program that has also been established. They offer temporary care for babies and foster homes to prepare for potential adoption. A video to overview the Center was shown and detailed that there have been over 40,000 children and families helped by the Center's services over the 90 years of the Center's existence. The video highlighted some of the programs that Barb explained such as teaching parenting skills, school truancy prevention, foster care program and training, creating student learning plans, establishing community partnerships, and teaching basic life skills to both kids and parents. Barb explained that our previous Kiwanis Foundation grants have been very helpful in buying equipment to enhance their educational programs. Happy Trails!
