12 Young Boys Who Fought in the Civil War Benny Nasser Scribe: Glenn Scott Benny Nasser, one of our resident civil war historians, spoke to us on the topic of "Young Boys in the Civil War." At the time of the war, the youngest age for the armies to take volunteers was 16. But we learned that tens of thousands of boys under 16, some as young as 11, lied about their age so they could serve. Many times a father going to war would take his young son with him to be a part of the same unit. The youngsters filled several different billets, many connected to music. Their jobs ranged from being drummers, buglers or fifers to "powder monkeys," stretcher bearers, hospital attendants and actual soldiers.
13 Benny is a master at researching civil war archives where he derived personal narratives for a variety of these young recruits. He brought to life the accounts of several of these boys including pictures and individual stories of their experiences and their reflections on the war. Benny portrayed young men like 12-year-old Charles King, a drummer who rose in rank to become a Drum Major. Charles was the youngest soldier killed in the battle of Antietam. Also, Orian Howe, 13, was especially courageous under fire. His father had taken him with him when he enlisted, lying about Orian's age. Because of Orian's bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in Benny told of another boy from Vermont who also received the Medal of Honor. John Clem, , fought bravely at the battle of Chickamauga and rose to become a Major General. These are a few of the interesting stories of the young men who were motivated to represent their states in this tragic war. We thank Benny for bringing us this educational and captivating presentation. Happy Trails! See you Saturday at:
