Harry said Ed Tomlinson saw him coming and called for security. A policeman offered Ed use of his taser - Harry was glad Ed declined. Harry was also happy he will be in Paris next week for the Kiwanis International Conference. Lewis-Palmer School District 38 Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce Tri-Lakes Women's Club Tri-Lakes Cares Gold Sponsors JJ Tracks Also working as a parade marshal, Steve Steffey was happy to have survived the kids on Third Street. Steve said they were wild! He had a second buck for surviving the knobby knees contest at the mixer

Tri-Lakes Printing on Friday. RF Smith quickly pointed out that this contest was Steve's idea in the first place. Note Steve's knobby knees below. Wave's End Services, LLC Silver Sponsors Hunter-Wolff Gallery The Wine Seller A few parade pictures... After working long and hard on the parade, director Pete Peterson was happy to be going on vacation with his two grandsons to Lake Vermillion, Minnesota. This will involve a week of swimming, fishing, boating, mosquitos, black flies and other biting insects.

Mike Luginbuhl had five dollars of thanks for the parade southend security team. They got participants to their rightful place in the parade - it went very well and Mike was thankful. Dennis Beasley and his granddaughter Katie were the committee to judge the parade floats. They walked the entire parade lineup route, then back down the route to hand out the awards. Dennis and Katie

were impressed at how excited and proud honorees (kids and adults) were to receive and display their ribbons. Dennis was sorry this couldn't be done in front of the parade audience for all to enjoy. Watt Hill said he was greatly honored to be one of the grand marshals for the parade. Watt said he is a patriot and will die a patriot. He saw a lot of young parents with young kids displaying patriotism, and he thinks patriotism is making a comeback. Watt said God bless Kiwanis/Sertoma and all of you.

Bob Evans wanted to thank the ladies at the Diva table and Senior Leadership Program kids who did a wonderful job of "cat-herding" during the children's parade. RF Smith said he was walking down the parade route with Jack Fry following the parade. RF was tapped on the shoulder by a mother, with her son, who told him that this was the best 4th of July

parade in the world, that they enjoy it every year and to keep on doing it forever. RF said this is just another example of how much people appreciate the parade that is done for them, not for us. Pat Losey told us a little history of the parade. It was begun by a lady who thought Monument should have a parade. Initially, it was a couple blocks long. After two years, she turned it over to a couple who then started the children's parade and subsequently asked Jerry if Sertoma would take it over. It happened! There are two free, easy ways to donate money to the MHKC - without paying a nickel out of your own pocket. One is by getting a gift card (available from Mike Wangeman that comes with $5 credit) for Safeway or Kings Soopers. You can then indefinitely add money to the card. Also, at Amazon.com Smile, you can designate Monument Hill Service Club as your charity organization and purchase items through Smile. Then Amazon donates.5% of all your purchases to our club. BIRTHDAYS Frank Wynne provided a joke and announced the seven member birthdays for next week. Don Johnson Mike McGrath

First up was Paul.

Paul Short, our Sargent-at-Arms (Snickers distributor) is from Iowa. Paul read from an August 1943 St. Louis newspaper article describing how Capt. Paul Striegel in an A-36 Intruder attacked, and probably sank, an Italian cruiser just off the coast of Italy. Capt.Striegel was killed in that bombing raid. Paul said he just learned a few years ago that he was named after this family WWII aviator hero, Paul Striegel. Paul said especially in front of this crowd, he is proud to wear his Frog hat (well earned) and his Vietnam sticker from "In all of the Army's wisdom," he was trained as a clerk typist but actually served his tour of duty as a machine gunner! This duty was for the MAC-V Defense Force covering north and west of Saigon. His stories included Army food (he lost 35 pounds) and monster beetles big enough to carry a can of Baumba Beer around a night campfire. Among his duties, Paul was assigned to watch out for and train a new guy, Zane, who was also from Iowa. Very shortly, Zane became a trusted team member. After Paul returned from Vietnam, he visited Zane's family and assured Zane's mother that Zane would be ok. After Zane

returned home, Paul visited the farm again where Zane told an assembled crowd: "I would like to introduce you to the guy who saved my life in Vietnam." Paul said that was one of the most powerful experiences he has had in his adult life. Paul told a story of meeting cool, calm astronaut Frank Borman, who was eating hot, hot Mexican food without a drop of sweat. Paul met his wife of 34 years during a 20k run (she beat him bad)! They have never looked back! Next up was Mark Silvanic. Mark talked briefly about the origin of his family name, which changed after his grandparents moved from Scranton, PA to Binghamton, NY. Mark's parents were volunteers. His father was in the Army National Guard retiring with 27 years service. Their family traveled around the world including Kansas, Berlin, Ft. Dix, Florida, Virginia, Korea and Wisconsin. While in high school, Mark joined Kiwanis Key Club and eventually became president. As a cadet at the Air Force Academy, Mark returned to brief that same Kiwanis Club. Mark

graduated from the USAFA in 1985 with a degree in Soviet Area Studies. Mark trained in the T-37 and T-38, and his first assignment was as a forward air controller in the A-37 at Ft. Hood, TX. This included a transition to the OA-10. While in Texas, he met Dorothy, who was in charge of an OA-10 support group. Mark was then assigned to A-10's in Alconbury, UK. While there, he and fellow aviators hosted veterans from the Battle of Briton and put on an airshow for the veterans. Mark was then assigned to Lakenheath, learned a new airplane (F-15), and had combat deployments to Iraq and Italy (Yugoslavia). Dorothy continued her successful Air Force maintenance career. Their next assignment was at Shepard AFB, which resulted in their children, Clara and George. Next was Aviano, Italy where the kids became international and learned to speak Italian fluently. When traveling, if someone asked if they were Americans, the kids would answer, "No, but our parents are." Later assignments included Kirkland AFB, Colorado Springs, Germany, Lakenheath and settling in Monument. Clara is a senior at Dartmouth, and George is a cadet at the USAFA. Mark said he was honored to be part of this organization. Happy Trails! See you Saturday at:

Lewis Palmer D-38 Administration building (a.k.a. Big Red) 146 Jefferson Street, Monument, CO Please use the West or North entrances!
