2 MUSINGS FROM MIKE Who do you say that I am? One of the most dramatic moments in the Gospels is when Jesus turns to his disciples and asks this. Who do you say that I am? The answers they gave and what Jesus said to them launched the next stage of Jesus life and ministry and send him on to Jerusalem and the cross. It is the question that Jesus keeps asking of everyone of his followers: Who do you say that I am? It is the BIG question of life. What are you basing your journey and your hopes on? Jesus? Or something else who do you say that he is? It is the million and one little questions that pose themselves everyday: - Will you tell the truth because of who Jesus is to you? - Will you forgive because of who Jesus is to you? - Will you go the second mile for someone because of who Jesus is to you? - Is there is something in you that no outside event can touch because of who Jesus is to you? - Do you know how to stop and enjoy the life you have been given because of who Jesus is to you? This is what we do for each other as a church. Answer the big and the small questions of life and who Jesus is. And then help each other to live the answers every day. Who do you say that he is? Shalom, Pastor Mike February 15 page 2
3 Ash Wednesday is the first step of the 40 day journey of Lent that leads to the cross of Good Friday and the empty tomb of Easter. On Ash Wednesday we own up to things not being as they should be in our lives and commit ourselves to seeking God s answers in Jesus. We will have a variety of opportunities for you to receive the Ash Wednesday ashes and participate in services at the church: - Noon: A half hour service over lunch time where you may begin your Lenten journey. - 7 p.m. A service in Spanish and English where we begin together as God s people on the Lenten journey. Also, early in the morning (6 a.m.) Pastor Mike will be out in the Butler community taking ashes out to the streets. Pastor Mike is welcoming your suggestions for where he could best do that in the Butler Community. Diner? Coffee Shop? Someplace else? Send your suggestions to the church umcbutler@gmail.com Skylands District Day of Learning Resourcing the Church for Vital Ministry Saturday, February 21 st Butler United Methodist Church Schedule for the day: 8:30-9:00am registration 9:00-9:45am devotions & plenary 10:00-11:30am 1 st workshop session 11:45-1:15pm 2 nd workshop session Your help is needed to set up classrooms (Friday evening) as well as assisting in the kitchen (providing light breakfast and snacks) and with hosting (people will be stationed at key entry and traffic spots in the building to answer questions, help guests to get to their destinations, and help out with any other needs someone may have) on Saturday, and then with clean up and putting the rooms back in order once the activities are done Saturday afternoon. 5 Wherever you are in your journey, picture how you want this life to end. We make our best decision in hindsight, so imagine yourself standing before God. How would your ideal life have looked? Time flies. And it flies faster each year. So don t procrastinate. Think of your age as miles per hour. When you re 7 years old, it feels like you are never going to turn 8. When you are in your twenties and thirties, the years start passing by more rapidly. By the time you re doing fifty or sixty, it s hard to keep track of what year it is. Anything beyond that and you re in the fast lane. Like a game of hot potato, you should get rid of your possessions as fast as possible. Invest everything you can in the Kingdom. Your life is going to be over any minute and you re going to regret holding on to things you weren t able to keep. Colossians 3:23-25 Faith as Wesley Lived It Sundays, 11:30am and Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the Library, led by Pastor Mike January 1th through February 18th, 2015 A HEART LIKE HIS Seeking the Heart of God through a Study of David Thursdays 10:00-11:45am in the Youth Room Please join us! Come when you can, leave when you must! CUMAC Have A Heart Luncheon is Saturday February 14th, 2015 at St. Claire s Parish in Clifton. Although we no longer host this wonderful event, we do continue to set-up, serve and clean-up. If you are available for all or any part of the day or the night before, please let Pam know so we can car pool x 15. THANK YOU for your generosity at the Sunday School sponsored RED BIRD BRUNCH on January 11th! Together we raised $ for the 2015 RED BIRD MISSION TEAM! Thank you GOD for this wonderful opportunity to serve in Jesus Name. February 15 page 5
