1 TIDINGS OF WELLER Affirm Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as we care for others and tell people about Him. Affirm ~ Care ~ Tell November 2015 Giving Thanks When It s the Last Thing on Your Mind We re entering the season for giving thanks. There s a holiday coming up on my calendar that tells me this is the time of year for it, so I m getting myself ready to be thankful. But for those who count ourselves disciples of Jesus, thanksgiving is not limited to one day out of the year. It s not even confined to a particular week or month. In fact, giving thanks is something we are called to do all the time. It s supposed to be a way of life. Giving thanks is not always the first thing on my mind. Yes, I thank God every day for the blessings of life on God s green earth. I have family, friends, enough food to eat, a roof over my head. Not everyone has these things in their lives. So I give thanks. But even when things don t go my way or I find something lacking in my life, I should still look for something to be thankful for. I was reminded of this after reading a recent devotional in which the writer told of having been caught in traffic I can totally related to this and told of complaining loudly to the driver about how long the trip was taking. The driver replied that any other means of transportation would have taken even longer. At hearing this, the writer noted: Most of the time, we see what's missing in our lives rather than what we have. We complain more than we give thanks. * times, beaten, starved, shipwrecked, and disrespected by his fellow Jews, Paul could be the poster child for complaining. Yet throughout his letters and in every circumstance, he looked for something to be thankful for. Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20). Paul even counted his suffering for the sake of the Gospel as an occasion to give thanks. PLEASE NOTE: not all suffering is meant to be for our benefit, especially if it is suffered in a poisonous and abusive relationship. That is decidedly NOT God s will for our lives. Things may not always go our way. We won t get everything we want in life. But instead of looking at what s missing, becoming grateful for what we have is an attitude we can cultivate. Singer Cheryl Crow said the same thing in one of her songs: It s not having what you want, it s wanting what you ve got. ** This month, let us thank the Giver of all that is good for what we have. May we seek to grow as thank-full disciples of Jesus Christ. Be blessed, Pastor Bob If anyone had cause to complain about the circumstances of his life, the Apostle Paul certainly had plenty of occasion to do so. 2 ALL SAINTS DAY We will recognize loved ones who have died during the past year (since 1 Nov 2014) at the All Saints Day worship services next Sunday, 1 November. SUNDAY SCHOOL FALL FEST ON 1 NOVEMBER Join us for a hayride, refreshments, and treats during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 until 10:45, on 1 November. Wear a costume if you'd like! This will be a rain or shine event, with activities in the fellowship room instead of the hayride in case of rain. Parents are welcome to join us! Call Pat Alexander if you have any questions at THANKSGIVING POT LUCK 8 November at 5:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Please bring your favorite dish to share. Invite a friend. Please write on the back of your green attendance slips if you plan to attend so we can get an approximate count. WOLFGANG CANDY The Missions Committee is selling Wolfgang Candy to help pay for youth mission trips. All order forms and pay- ments are due Sunday, 8 November. Order forms and payments may be placed in the offering plate or in Sandy Valentine s mailbox. Proceeds will go to youth mission trips. Candy should be delivered no by 13 December. Please make checks payable to: Weller UMC Memo: candy. Thanks!
3 NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL TOPIC STARTS 1 NOVEMBER: THE BOOK OF JOB, TRIED, TESTED & TRIUMPHANT When someone we know is going through a time of suffering and trial, a reference to Job is often mentioned in some context. We feel comfortable referring to Job as the ultimate example, but do we really know his story? Do we really understand the circumstances of his suffering? Job is a complex story of one man s journey from blessing to despair, from affluence to poverty, and respect to ridicule. This biblical story is told in great depth and detail --- demanding an intensive study to gain a full understanding of its truth. Each class will include a CD presentation, by Dr. David Jeremiah, senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, California, discussion, and home study guide. All are welcome. Sundays, 9:45 a.m. in the Weller House, starting 1 November. Taught by Fred Younkins. *************************************************************************** SALVATION ARMY ANGEL TREE The Angel Tree should be up on Sunday, 8 November and will be available until all 25 tags have been taken. The tags and the purchased items are due back on 29 November. These tags represent children in the Frederick County area who are in need of new clothing and shoes. To participate, select a tag from the tree, then see one of the Mission Committee members to let us know which tag or tags you have taken. See Sandy Valentine in the church office to get a tag during the week. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Alexander at , or Kelly Alexander at
4 PLANS FOR TREE IN WELLER HOUSE YARD If you haven't noticed yet, the tree in front of the Weller House has been topped. The reason it was not sawed completely down is because at our ad board meeting we decided to have the bottom carved into something. At this time we have several suggestions, but we would like to hear from the congregation on this. If you have a suggestion for an appropriate carving, please contact Paulette Mathias or any member of the Ad Board before our next meeting on 10 November. WELLER ON THURMONT OPEN HOUSE TOUR We are scheduled to be on the Thurmont Holiday House Tours this year and we need some helpers for this event. We need help preparing food, selling it, being here on the day of the tour to answer questions, hand out brochures and whatever else may come up. Sign up sheets will be coming to worship very soon. For more information contact Paulette Mathias. WELLER HOUSE THANKS Thanks to the Mathias family for topping the tree next to the road and removing the wood. This now prepares it to possibly be carved. Also, thanks to Tom, Bob, and Hazel Shaffer for installing the Weller House sign. Lastly, thanks again to Nancy Rice for designing the sign and Bob Follin for constructing it. Take a look the next time you drive VOLUNTEER NEEDED... The trustees are looking for a volunteer or two to perform weekly boiler checks for insurance purposes. This takes only 5 minutes each week during the heating season - October -April. If interested, please contact John Hart or Tom Shaffer.
5 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Last year we prepared over 40 shoeboxes for this international ministry, so we are looking to better this year with a goal of 50. Pick up your ready-to-assemble shoe boxes (if you don't have any of your own) in the hallway. We need school supplies, small toys, personal care (hygiene) items, or anything else that fits in a shoebox (t-shirts, hats, toys, school supplies). Please no food, liquids or lotions, aerosol cans, fragile items, or war-related toys. A detailed list is inside the label located with the boxes in the hallway and narthex. Please wrap and pack your boxes on your own at home (note that we must be able to open the lids,). Deadline to bring boxes is on or before 15 November. Please be sure to attach the label. We are also asking that you donate $7.00 per box to cover shipping costs. If you have any questions, please contact Bob Miller. Thank you! MISSION CENTRAL TRIP 19 NOVEMBER We will be volunteering at Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, PA, on 19 November from 9:00 am until noon. We will also be delivering computers, printers, and other electronic computer related items that day. If you have any computer equipment you'd like to donate, even if it is not working, please let us know. You can bring it to the church or we can arrange to pick it up. If you are interested in joining us on this trip, or would like more information about it, please contact Pat Alexander at LOOKING FOR POTTER S HANDS Our puppet ministry, The Potter s Hands, is looking for a few good hands with the rest of the body attached too, of course. We need puppeteers as well as people who like to work behind the scenes to make signs and props. If you are interested in joining this amazing team of talented people, contact Wes Baugher.
