1 TIDINGS OF WELLER Affirm Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as we care for others and tell people about Him. Affirm ~ Care ~ Tell Easter People, All Year Round Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! all, God s not done with us yet. But we are new creations meant to live out this new life in Christ by faith and by continuing the work of the One we call Lord and Savior. These words form the traditional greeting for Easter morning when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the grave. These are good and joyful words, and we are right to use them each Easter morning to recall God s victory over death by raising Christ to new life. Easter morning was God s answer to Good Friday. Death, evil and sin no longer have the last word. Because of the Resurrection, the last word now is the same as the first word, and that word is Jesus the Christ. Jesus rose so that we can be Resurrection people throughout the year. As part of that remembrance, our next sermon series entitled Refresh will focus on the work of the Holy Spirit in the church and in our world. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, the apostle Peter told his Jewish critics, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19-20). We know the presence of God in our lives through the gift of God s Holy Spirit. We may think Easter is a one time, one-day celebration of this central event of our faith. But there s more to it than that. You see, Easter is not just a day it s a season. The next 7 Sundays in the church calendar constitute the season of Easter. Beginning with Easter Day, this period is also known as The Great Fifty Days. We use this time to celebrate Christ s Resurrection and to prepare for the coming of God s Holy Spirit, celebrated on Pentecost (8 June). The most important thing to remember about this time in the church year is that we are not called the people of Easter only one day a year. Christ rose so we can be Easter People all year round. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are the people who have become new creations in Christ. We are unfinished creations to be sure; after Internet users know how our web browsers can get hung up on a site. That happens to me a lot and I don t pretend to understand why. But when it does, I hit the refresh button on the toolbar and the page reloads, enabling me to see the content of the page. This world is hung up on a corrupted page because of the evil that is born in the human heart. God s good Creation is defaced by the violence, hate, envy, exploitation and dehumanizing effects of sin in our world. Jesus Christ is God s way to hit the refresh button for our world. Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! Pastor Bob 101 N. Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, MD Office: On the Web:
