76 Congers Road Rev. Barbara Hoffman, Pastor New City, NY New City United Methodist Church (845) Cell: ( Volume 43, No. 11 Mary Gardella, Editor Parsonage: (845) November 2018 (845) ============================================================================== Dear Friends and Family, I read this prayer recently: Father, bless us according to our thanklessness, lest Thou bless us according to our thankfulness, and we starve. (Anonymous). How true is that!!! The past few months, I have to admit, I have been a little depressed. I didn t think there was much that could steal my joy in the Lord, by lately I have not been so joyous. My belief that we have progressed as human beings and as a culture have been challenged. My hope in humanity has been severely tested. And, I have allowed my spirit to be crushed. I had to stop watching the news too much hate, political division, terror threats, suffering people, pain, angst, murders, devastating weather events, etc., etc. These things seem to suck the joy right out of me. Now, I am not suggesting that we don t need to pay attention to our political and cultural world I think we need, now more than ever, to voice our faithinformed opinions. (Please be sure to vote!) However, I do believe we need to look at our world through the lens of Jesus Christ and his love for all of humanity, first and foremost, and never take our eyes off of our Lord. That s what I have done, and it led me to depression. But, then God spoke to me through scripture and through other Christian thinkers and writers, and made me realize that taking my eyes off of the Lord meant losing sight of all of the blessings with which God and surrounded me. I had given up counting my blessings, and was counting my woes instead. I m sure I am not the only one who has been feeling this way, nor am I the only one who has taken my eyes off of the Lord and God s blessings in my life. The prayer above would not be so poignant if it were not so true. So, my prayer for you this November, and in this great season of Thanksgiving, is that you find your joy in the Lord and in the many blessings with which God has surrounded you. Plant your eyes on Jesus, and keep them there, and he will guide your path, and light your way into a new season of joy. To cheer you, I am leaving you with some Thanksgiving one-liners: 1

Thanksgiving One-Liners: Just be thankful we re not getting all the government we re paying for. -- Will Rogers I remember an elderly lady testifying that she had only two teeth in her mouth (top and bottom), and she was rejoicing because they hit. -- Sherwood Eliot Wirt You never know how much you have to be thankful for until you pay taxes on it. -- Rev. Denny J. Brake The worship most acceptable to God comes from a thankful and cheerful heart. -- Plutarch ( AD) The most important prayer in the world is just two words long: Thank you. -- Meister Eckhart (1327 AD) Joy is really the simplest form of gratitude. Karl Barth To stand on one s legs and prove God s existence is a very different thing from going on one s knees and thanking him. -- Soren Kierkegaard It s important for your health to have an attitude of gratitude. When you get up in the morning, do you say Good Lord, morning!? Or do you say, Good morning, Lord!? -- George Goldtrap Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! -- Psalm 95:2 Many Blessing in the Lord, Pastor Barbara Looking ahead to the holidays: Greening Service.. 3 Prayer Corner: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:36 A native American grandfather talking to his young grandson tells the boy he has two wolves inside of him, struggling with each other. The first is the wolf of peace, love and kindness. The other wolf is fear, greed and hatred. Which wolf will win, Grandfather? asks the young boy. Whichever one I feed is the reply. Native American Proverb Thank you Charlene Caulk People To People Food Collection: November 4 th & 18 th Last month we donated 32 lbs worth $89.60!! 5 God loves a cheerful giver! Dear Friends As you are aware, we maintain a special fund to meet with the expenses in connection with the repairs, renovations and upkeep of our Church building, as well as for purchases of miscellaneous items from time to time. Many of you have contributed generously. So far, we have received $20, and we deeply appreciate and express our gratitude for your support. We now urge those members who have not contributed towards the Capital Campaign, to prayerfully support our Church. For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. (2 Corinthians 8:12) You can support the Church by giving an online donation by visiting our website: Thank you, Norma Christian, Financial Secretary ***************************************** Angel s Attic: Every now and then, we are the recipients of a valuable donation. The reality of our situation is that we just do not have customers that purchase big ticket items. Typically, we try but eventually lower the price to one that will initiate a purchase. Which leads me to this request: We would love to have a person in our congregation we could turn to that could sell the item on social media. Neither one of us have any experience in this area. If this is you, and you would be willing to do this to help our thrift store, please speak to either of us. And, a great big THANK YOU in advance! Also: we are in need of sheets and towels. Our Christmas Shop will be opened shortly Sue and Pat 5

November Birthdays 4: Mary Krzykowski 12: Kristen Sandberg 17: Liz Samini 22: April Morris 23: Larry Rohrs November Anniversaries: 18: Patti & Rich Wittig 27: Linda & Pete Kontos If we missed your date, you are still special in our hearts, Please forgive as we do not have the master list. Grocery Store Gift Cards For Sale g;we have grocery store gifts cards available for sale every Sunday after the church service in Fellowship Hall. There are $50 and $100 denominations of Shop Rite and Stop & Shop, and our church receives 5% from each card purchased. Please see Kristen & Debby Sandberg for more information. Give the gift of Christmas to a child. Operation Christmas Child gathers shoeboxes filled with gifts and supplies that are distributed to children around the world. Please see Kristen & Debby Sandberg for a shoebox. The shoeboxes are due back to the church by Sunday, November 11 th when we will have a blessing of the shoeboxes. 6

November is Project Joy month!! The Christmas season is already approaching. Most of you know that means it is time for us to bring joy to Rockland County kids from families going through difficult economic times. Families have written their letters and submitted them to People to People for others to choose from. Your Project Joy committee will go to their offices on November 2 nd, the first day letters are available, and we will pick some lucky kids for us to provide a happy Christmas. Rules require that each child receive a couple articles of clothing and at least two fun things. These requests will be divided and typed up so that one or more people can shop for gifts for each child. Gift request slips will be available for our congregation to pick up: the first three Sundays of November. Take as many or as few requests as you wish. Remember to fill in the slip that the committee needs to keep track of which kind souls are buying what. Give that slip to the Project Joy team (or leave it in the basket on the Project Joy table). Keep the second slip to remind yourself what you are purchasing. Gifts will be presented to the altar the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 25. If you cannot be in Church on the 25 th, please make arrangements to get the gifts to Church, or to Jeannine, BEFOREHAND. We will deliver the gifts to People to People that week. Can t or don t want to shop, but you would like to participate? The Project Joy team will shop for you. Write checks to the Church with Project Joy in the memo, or cash is okay- along with a note who it is from and that it is for Project Joy. Any questions? Call me at (845) Thank you for your loving kindness! Jeannine Alexandro, Project Joy Chairperson 7

Save the Date!! December 23, :00 am during worship The Christmas Shoe Tree An All Age Musical with a Soles4Souls Challenge Help Change the World, One Shoe and One Soul at a Time!! As part of a service project challenge and in conjunction with our All Age Musical, we will be collecting shoes for Soles4Souls. All kinds of shoes are accepted- dress shoes, high heels, sneakers. We will be collecting New and Used shoes!! You can begin bringing shoes in November through the end of December. There will be a labeled tub in the Narthex. Please join us on December 23 rd for the musical The Christmas Shoe Tree- to learn how the shoe drive and the project go together. Meet the siblings from the Loggin s family, and join them at their family s Christmas Tree farm where you will discover what all the excitement is about the fabled Christmas Shoe Tree. Through scripture songs and a heartwarming story our New City UMC All Age Choir and actors will share the Good News of Christmas. Sometimes something as simple as a pair of shoes can make all the difference in the world. A pair of shoes, to cover the feet of someone in need, can be a powerful tool for ministry. Even when people have spiritual needs, they still need something as basic as a pair of shoes to cover their feet so they can go to school or work. Souls4Soles helps to meet these basic needs. WE are sharing our shoes as part of this Christian hospitality. 8
