After an absence of nearly 400 years the Carmelte mouks, known as Whte Frars, return to an establshed place among monastc orders n Great Brtan. The Whte Frars, so called because of a whte mantle worn over the brown habt, held wde nluence and power n Great Brtan untl 1538, when Henry 'V ordered ther headquarters n London to-be razed to the ground. Ther chapel and buldngs stood between Fleet street and the Thames, adjolnjog tpe temple, whch was founded by the Templars. Whltefrlars street stll bears the name of the order, and a newspaper offce n the dstrct s called Carmelte house. But the monks have been gone for nearly four centures, and were wthout a home n Kngland untl the Catholc bshop of Southwark assgned hs churches n Slttngbourne and Faversham to ther care. The Whte Frars wore ther mantles as a sgn that the order was founded tn,palestlne. t was establshed on Mount Carroel n 1212 by a Crusader named Berthold. Whte Frars are not common, however, the two at Slttngbourne and Faversham. beng the only ones n England. When ther London monastery was founded durng the Crusades the order mmedately attracted royal support, and Edward gave the Whte Frars great lattude. Ther prory and church were rebult n 13.T0, when t was sad that several hundred monks lved there, enjoyng wde popularty both as preachers and confessors. An example of ther power s found n the fact that almost from the frst the order had the rlsrht of sanctuary. Any fugtve from justce could take refuge* there for forty days unless accused of treason or sacrlege. The rght was retaned untl 1607, long after the monastery and church had dsappeared After the suppresson of <»t- the monastery the place became a no* torlous haunt of outcasts. The Whte Frars are altogether dstnct from the other order of Carmeltes founded by St. Teresa n Members of ths group are known as Dscalced Carmeltes, because they wear sandals nstead of shoes and stockngs. Anyhow, can't leave hnt- Erc nodded, and turned to bs lesser enemes. "Who else wth try tr Sydney BU, hard-handed Australan, was the frst to move forward, and murderous Bg Smth second. ' Erc accepted them, and commandeered from the squaws three kamlekas (water-proof outer garments) for them and hmself. The hunters had started across the headland wth the boat; fnal preparatons for what mght be a one-way journey must now be made. Erc called Boy asde, ran wth hm ffty yards down wnd untl the murk grew thck between, and passed hm hs revolver. "To protect our party n case don't come back," be sad quetly n bs rval's ear. Boy's hand grpped t strongly, and a look of steel came nto bs face. Hs frst thought was to thrust the barrel nto Erc's sde and order hm not to go. The stubborn fool would not lsten to reason, but he mght heed the cold steel n hs rbs! But when he gazed nto the narrowed pupls, he knew the bluff would not work. Anyway the whole stuaton had cnanged now that he had yelded tfp hs scepter of authorty. t Sandomar Came Fghtng Back, Falng, Rsng to Reel on Agan. led men on hand waded n the bolng foam, and although the waves smote them lke sandbags and made them reel, they held the kayak whle the three voyagers boarded and drew the hatches tght. Could they get through the surf nto deep water? The answer lay wth one man alone Sandomar. Wth a grunt, he sezed the gunwale and lumbered nto the tde. n and on he stumbled, hs gorlla strength and anmal courage matched aganst the fury of the breakers. Blow after blow they dealt hm, frst aganst hs thghs, then hs barrel chest, fnally breakng over hm. bludgeonng hs head, blndng hs freball eyes. When he could go no further, he passed the boat along untl hs bg hands were on the stern. Watchng hs chance.' as a bllow rushed sea; ward, he gave a mghty thrust. The kayak shot forward, then up to the crest of the next wave. The bllow met t well beyond the breakers. Sandomar came fghtng back, fallng, rsng to reel on agan, hurled forward wth back-brenkng volence, at last lumberng through the foam wth mmense arms hangng lmp, hs eyes lke a dead seal's. Wth a suffocatng heart, Nan watched the lttle craft beat out to sea. nce se thought t was gone. An avalanche of water swept t down. For a frgd eternty, perhaps ten seconds, posshly twenty, there was naught where t had been but a gray hllsde streak wth foam. But presently the ponted bow shot out lke the snout of a shark, and the heads of the boatmen appeared one by one. The paddes glnted wanly, as the lttle shp saled on. Nan's chll despar began to change to flamng hope. A darng' thought stole nto her stunned bran; not Just that Erc had done rght n some vague abstract sense, but tha+^rfs foolsh dream was nspred truth, that there were hdden laws governng lfe whch Roy's materalsm* could never explan and whch had decreed Erc's vctory. How dd she or anyone know what was true, what was false? Per haps Erc's dealsm was not Just a splendd lluson, to trck hm to a frutless death, but s workng force, a lvng, conquerng pv>wer. Perhaps he would yet wn to hs goal and return to stand besde her on the strand. Her bands clasped over her breast She straned nto the murk, to follow 4 the dmmng, lvng shape so small,.so brave, n the heavng desert of death. Not once dd t soar out of the roarng valleys but that her heart soared too. Not one bllow grappled t only to drop behnd la wrthng fury but that her lps breathed thanks. "Fght on, Erc," she whspered. "Go and come back safe.... Brng hm back to me, lttle shp. b, don't fal hm now ** Besde her, Sandomar and hs gang cursed and breathed hard. Meanwhle Erc was fulfllng hs destny. A1V hs long journeylngs had been toward ths one goal, a gran of sand n a lonely sea, and an ndan chld callng hm wth outstretched arms. Ths was the great battle of bs lfe. Nan, Boy, Sandomar had no part n ths. t was all between hm and hs ferce old dam, the sea. She was the mother of hs race. She had fed blm, schooled hm, chershed hm, and now she would try hm to the bone. And the test was commensurate wth hs rank the her of sea-kngs. Ever she had spared no pans on hs blue-eyed, far-hared brood. From those dm days they had saled forth n panted galleys, redbearded ferce-browed brutes n wnged hats, from the deep-cut fords of Scandnava, she had harred them, proved them, slan them wthout mercy, untl she had bred men! Yet to the dark spawn of the western sles Erc owed hs fghtng chance. The wooden dory that was hs cradle would stand short shft n seas lke these; she would fll and flounder at the frst rush of the rollng mountans: and only the Alaskan kayak, developed n centures of rough salng after walrus and whale, could shake free and leap to the crest. t was no more than a whale-bone frame covered wth walrus hde, yet Erc blessed t n the name of hs Norse gods. No stately shp beatng through a tropc typhoon had ever made hs heart glow so warm. The hatch he occuped came nearly to hs nrmplts, and was scarcely large enough to admt hs body. The folds of hs kamleka made t watertght, and though one wave after another broke over hm. blndng hm, bludgeonng hs head and shoulders, always the craft buoyed up. shook off the ter-arms. and fought on. True, f t once fell n the trough of the seas the repeated onslaughts would cave n ts rbs, but by good seamanshp and paddlng for hs lfe wth the double blade, he managed to avod ths ptfall. The decfcwast so low~ that" the wn 9 could not seze and hustle t. Hs two comrades tmed ther strokes wth hs; caught up by hs conquerng sprt they fought as they had never fought before, drunk or sober, on land or sea, for lfe, bread, or favor of woman. Ther goal slowly neared. They could see fhe kneelng chld, braced aganst the wnd, ptched down sometmes as the rsng waves broke over the sandy shelves and washed her to the wast, but always strugglng up. "Hold on!" Erc shortted, hopng aganst hope that the cry would heat through the wnd to her ears. "We're comng for you!" She appeared to take heart. She could hear naught hut the bellow of the gale, but she saw hs lps move, and some fellowshp of courage leapng across the foam made her fght lke a shoaled salmon. The kayak came up on the lea of the slet. n comparatve quet water. Wth a yell. Erc sprang out, waded to land, and clasped the fantng chld n hs arms. Roarng' he knew not what perhaps the ancent battle-cry of the Vkngs wellng up from some old cellar n hs bran he waded back, thrust the lmp body nto the hold, cllmhed nto the hatch, and smote th» water wth hs blade. CHAPTER X The watchers on shore wated desolate eterntes. Had Roy glanced at Nan. he would have wondered where her dusky beauty had flown. Her eyes were dark wounds. Her cheeks were haggard and gray, her Hps drawn. Yet f she loved the man she had lost, she stll dd not know t. Love was the ash of a lghthouse through the storm, and the storm blew too thck between. But presently she ht her lp untl t bled. She thought she saw a strange-shaped shadow on the Water, revealed only an nstant through the flutterng curtans of spndrft. For nl she knew t was only a trck of her tortured fancy.... A moment mnrp she wated. Then, over the rollng hlls, a dark shape took form. At the same nstant, the murk parted lke a torn vel, and the scene was etrhed n vvd black and whte on her memory. The kayak seemed to be rdng the storm. For an nstant t hung posed, a symbol of vctory, on the wnd-whpped crest of the hghest bllow, lookng down on ts doman. The paddles flashed vallantly. The sea lght was on Erc's face. Then t came leapng toward land. She could not utter a sound. Her throat was too full. But Sandomar grunted she heard hm and Roy gasped out what she thought was an oath of amazement. Mother Horton threw up her lean arms wth a yell. "By G d. he's made t!" But no one blamed the old woman for the oath. The watchers never lost sght of the boat agan. t came wth a rush, the wnd behnd t. hurled through the foam, dodgng, rockng, ptchng, soarng up and dartng down. The boorga roared n van. The foled seas chased the lttle shp, to sprng upon ts back, but always ther leaps fell short (T B* co?mmj»r*.> The Rrd ^BecauseoTby Great Bounty by GRACE NLL CRWELL a Factor*! Katherne Edelmanl THNGS had been gong rather badly wth the Hamptons the past few months. t was true no great calamty or sorrow had befallen them, but Just a seres of petty annoyances and worres had cropped up almost daly the knd of thngs that gnaw and eat away the roots of the tree of happness and content. Ths mornng they had almost quarreled before Arthur left because Janet had decded that they would not have a turkey for Thanksgvng. Arthur beleved, and rghtly so, that a turkey wth all the trmmngs was a part of He Paused Long Enough- at the Door to Call Back. Thanksgvng tself f one could afford t, but Janet nssted that a chcken would do them Just as well: "What's the use of spendng ten dollars or more for a dnner when we can get one that wll do just as well for less than fve?" she had argued, and fnally Arthur let her have her way, but he paused long enough at the door when leavng to call back: "xwks as f we ceew- TTveTtke real folks on Thanksgvng day at least" After he had gone Janet sat n deep thought hs partng remark had stung her deeply. How could he talk lke that after all she had done all the sacrfces that she had made so that thngs would be easer for hm n the future! Then t suddenly dawned upon her that a great many of the worres that had annoyed and upset them of late were mostly of her makng. Lookng back over ther fve years of marred lfe she saw that t was ths penurous trat of hers that had been accountable for most of the trals that had beset ther path. Comng from a home where every penny counted, she had found t hard to spend two dollars where one would do f one only skmped enough. John ha'd tred to reason t out wth her many 'tmes, explanng to her that he would be the last man n the world to urge her to lve beyond ther means, but, snce they were n a poston to do so wthout endangerng ther future, he would lke to lve better than they dd. There was a generous nest-egg n the bank and a goodly sum n lfe nsurance should he be taken, so, why, he had often reasoned, couldn't they enjoy a good show or dnner when they felt lke t? Now, n the lght of the awakenng hat had come to her, Janet saw that she had been unjust to Arthur. t was n Thanksgvng There Was a Large Turkey on the Table. true, she told herself, that she had been dong all the savng and skmpng for hs sake, but she realzed now that she had been robbng hm of many joys that were hs rght, and, perhaps, keepng hm back n hs professon keepng hm from rsng beyond a certan level. She knew, too. that n cheatng hm she had also cheated herself and made the way hard, but t was of Arthur she was especally thnkng. But joy came to her at the thought that t was not too tate to make amends. And on Thanksgvng there was a large turkey on the table, wth all the trmmngs that anyone could crave, and Janet had nvted a few of the people that she knew Arthur lked best to share the feast wth them.. 19**. Most newspapers do ths wth consderable fathfulness n spte of the ncreasng demand for sensatonalsm. Some of them call tt humor, but the common sense s suggested, and may be worked out by those who care for t As an example of ths note a recent syndcated artcle by Westbrook Pegler, and appearng n a good many frst rate papers. n ntroducng Mr. Pegler the paper see regularly says: "Pegler Gves a Humorous Slant on the New Deal." What s called a humorous slant s actually the most mportant pece of wsdom have seen prnted n many months. Mr. Pegler says: "The trouble wth the Russan Sovet system has been that t sought to compel the ctzens to work, sometmes resortng to enforced labor, whereas under the Amercan plan enforced loafng wll be held over the heads of the comrades as a threat to work hogs who endanger the success of the new deal by ndulgng a selfsh passon for tol." Mr. Pegler works out the dea to the extent of a column, whch s not too much; many others would have made t nto a book, and thus bured the good dea. cast my vote for a wreath to Westbrook Pegler for wrtng the most llumnatng pece of Amercan wsdom n 1933; possbly for all tme. s e e n beng careful 'm rather an enthusast ; when n such mood, and receve an mportant paper or letter, put t away so carefully 1 can't fnd t later.... My reply s. do not know to exceed three or four, and these so wdely scattered they annoy me rarely.... n thnkng over that part of the joke referrng to women, become more serous, but rsk no fgures. e e o A new word lately becomng popular s moron. (Meanng a man sufferng: from arrested mental development.) t s rather a better word than fool, whch seems to mean a man who s not a full shllng; who never had any sense, and never wll have any. ; But a moron means one born wth suffcent and average ntellgence, and, after reachng twenty-fve or thrty, becomes shftless as to hs mnd, and quts developng t. estmate there are hundreds of morons to one fool; the number of complete fools s actually not great; there seems lttle doubt that the mnd may be developed as naturally and easly as the muscles, by proper exercse; but as we grow older our natural dsposton s to become flabby n flesh and mnd. Mllons are today supportng doctrnes as foolsh as perpetual moton. (nflaton, as an example; t s the same thng,) All such are sufferng from arrested mental development; they do not take a proper daly dozen for ther heads. Men de unnecessarly every day because of arrested physcal development, and morons develop n the same way : they become poorer thnkers because they eo not farly and properly exercse thel: mnds, and shuffle shftlessly-along to the bread lne or poor house when they mght have easer lved farly respectable and successful lves, and fnally acheved a very good obtuary n the local papers. e e. e After young men become educated n engneerng they begn clamorng; for Jobs. Ths clamorng has already resulted n the present staggerng appropratons for unnecessary and foolsh dams, reservors, lakes, rver mprovement, etc. The more young men act lke eantous old men, the better they wwy * get along.
