Mother was bor o November 10, 1912, to Hertford ad Julie Dubar ad grew up i Scrato, NC. Her father was from a great lie of loggers. Her mother was the religious leader i the family. She passed a lot of that o dow to her daughter. I have ofte said that I was somewhat like Timothy... Timothy s faith dwelt first i [his] gradmother Lois ad the [his] mother Euice. O April 10, 1935, she eloped with Joh Griffi, her almost ext door eighbor. I was bor i Lucille became very active i the church, but Joh was ot. Mother cotiued i her relatioship with the Lord ad church ad had me there all the time. Thigs chaged i our lives i 1947 whe my dad was baptized ad soo became a leader i the Scrato Christia Church. Our home became a have for preachers, primarily those who were preachig at Scrato ad thus comig for the weeked or comig for revivals. It was also a stopover place for preachers goig to other churches i the area. I 1954, Mother became a dorm mother at Camp Roaoke. This bega her love affair with RBC. From the o, there was hardly ever a choral program or aythig the college did that they were ot i attedace. My mother ad dad were iseparable they did everythig together. My dad bega a loggig busiess of his ow i the late 60s. Oe of my memories is of Mother s drivig the log truck to take a load of logs to the saw mill. The patrolma stopped her ad she did ot have special truck driver s licese she argued that she owed the truck but Dad s ame was o the registratio card. So the patrolma took Mother home, leavig the truck alog the road. It was this same truck that Dad drove to the mill i Patego i 1971 ad whe he took the chais off the logs, they rolled off o him. That was a tragic day i Mother s life for their lives had bee so itertwied for almost fifty years. But Mother was a fighter she moved to Elizabeth City i I was maagig the college bookstore at the time ad Mother became the assistat maager, which she cotiued whe Ed [Griffi] became the bookstore maager. She evetually retired, but soo bega voluteerig i the cafeteria because it was so importat to be preset to be the gradmother for all the college kids. That s the way she always itroduced herself durig orietatio. To the Griffis ad the host of Gradma Lucy's exteded family, frieds, ad RBC "kids," we exted heartfelt sympathy. Her legacy of faith will live o i them ad i those who will beefit from the Joh ad Lucille Griffi Fud i the RBC Foudatio. The Messeger Page 11
