2 WUMC HISTORY Next year, 2018, the Willoughby United Methodist Church celebrates 200 years of Serving God and our Community! As we prepare for this CELEBRATION you will start seeing references to our church s history in the Broadcaster, Sunday morning bulletins, and the WUM web-site. Here is how and when it all started. settlement which had its first town meeting in April of By 1818 it had a saw mill, a grist mill, a tannery, a postmaster and a doctor who also served as justice of the peace. Two hundred years ago in the Western Reserve, the little village we know as Willoughby was only twenty-two years old. It had begun with the building of a log cabin on the Chagrin River in 1796 and had now grown to be a thriving July

The committee is looking for volunteers to staff our table each Saturday, with shifts available from 8 to 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. While most of the visitors were vendors or shoppers who used our restrooms, many others toured the church, visited the sanctuary, chatted with our greeters or just stepped inside to warm up or cool off. Anyone with a heart for hospitality is encouraged to contact Johanna Stuehr at or Edwina Jones at for more information or to sign up to volunteer. Sign-up sheets with open market dates are located in the Welcome Centers in the Cloister and side Sanctuary door. Church and Community groups are welcome to use our table to display flyers and brochures to promote upcoming events like the McKinley 5K run, Chili Sale, VBS, etc. Flyers should be left behind the Welcome Center Stand on the Open Door shelf. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Gerber or sueandmarkgerber@gmail.com. We open our doors to the community during Downtown Willoughby events. Small Groups, Connection Groups and volunteers are encouraged to participate as Greeters during Last Stop Willoughby on August 20. Please contact Susan Gerber at for details or to sign up. The Chapel is now open each Sunday from 10:05-10:50 AM for prayer, Bible reading and silent reflection. There will be a church member available for prayer at that time for those who wish. July
4 Missions & Social Concerns News Thank you for your response to Hannah's Baby Bottle Blessings! We will inform you how much we gave when we are given the total! In July the Mission Moment will be about the ZOE project. The Noisy Collection on July 30 will be sent to this amazing Christian work! We are collecting Campbell soup labels through July only (these are being discontinued). We will continue to collect box tops for education (for Red Bird Mission) and cancelled postage stamps (for Marion Mission Storehouse who support missionaries including Ken & Debbie Vance). Have a blessed month! Enjoy the weather and your church, your family and your friends! Calling all Artists! Do you draw, paint, sculpt, do woodworking or make any other kind of art/craft? We would love to display your artwork during the Willoughby ArtFest Open Door, Saturday July 15 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Set up will be from 9:00-10:00 AM July 15 in the Parlor, pick up your art from 4:00 to 5:00 PM on that same Saturday. Contact Sally Kennedy at sek1029@sbcglobal.net or for more details. We will be camping the weekend of August 11th-13th. Craig Douglas has reserved almost exactly the same sites that we had last year for our annual church family camping weekend. Again we will be at the Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA just south of Madison, Ohio. This a great campground with very accommodating hosts. They have set everything up for us so there is no need to call the campground to make reservations. I have reserved enough sites for 2 motorhomes & 1 pop-up camper and many tents. If we need more camper sites we can get them. Let Craig Douglas know if you have any questions and if you are planning on going this year. Please also pass this on to anyone who would like to join us for this great camping weekend. 200th Anniversary Church History DVD The History of Willoughby United Methodist Church: 1818 to 1988 as told by Nancy Tyler, church historian, will be available on DVD for $ Money raised from DVD sales will go to our Youth for their 2017/2018 mission trip. 5 The Summer Hot Spot is a casual time for families and people of all ages to meet up at a specified location at a specific time in the community just to say "hi" during the summer. Dear WUMC Family, Words cannot express how much I appreciate all of your generosity, prayers, cards and notes during my last month in Ohio. You certainly showed me the love of Jesus through all that you did for me. The celebrations were such fun! I left WUMC knowing that I will succeed in my new chapter of life in North Carolina. Love and Prayers, Sally Koch 2017 McKinley 5K Thank you to all who contributed or participated in any way with the 3rd Annual McKinley 5K Run/Walk. Thanks to your efforts, we were able to raise nearly $4,000!! There are no Sunday morning classes for children or youth this summer. Classes will resume in September. Children are encouraged to come forward for Children s Chat during the 11 a.m. worship service as they learn about the virtues that the heroes of the Bible possessed including courage, commitment, loyalty and honor. By following their example, and putting our trust in God, they will learn to live heroic lives themselves. The Summer Hot Spot will take place 3 times a month during June, July, and August at various family friendly locations around the community. No lessons, no planned activities, no age requirements- just casual. After all, we are all members of God's Family. We hope to see you and your friends there. Summer Bible Study Vacations, family time and northeast Ohio sun are all reasons that it is difficult to commit to a Bible Study in the summer. We all understand the benefits of coming together in fellowship and study, but sometimes it doesn t fit with your schedule. Welcome to OBS! What is an OBS? An Online Bible Study. OBS studies allow you to connect whenever and where ever you can through the internet. Don t miss out on the opportunity to dig deeper into God s word with others from the comfort of your own home, office, coffee shop, carpool line, beach or wherever you choose! Me, Myself, and Lies by Jennifer Rothschild Through this interactive, five-week study, you will be equipped to: Quiet the voice in your head that says, You re not good enough by replacing negative self-talk with biblical soul-talk. Overcome the fears and insecurities that distract you from God s love and your purpose. Learn how to press on during hard times as you focus on the One who is bigger than your circumstances. For more information or to get connected online to the study, contact Stacy Becker at wumceduc@gmail.com or message her through facebook by June 11 th. Visit our summer prayer wall located outside the church by the municipal parking lot. We encourage our church family and the community to show their prayers through a rainbow of colors. Choose a ribbon and tie it on the wall as you say a prayer. Ribbons will remain up throughout the summer. July

8 Erik s Angels Sixteen years ago, our youngest son suddenly became critically ill. I learned three things that summer: Jesus heals; Prayer works; The Body of Christ is alive and well! The greatest gift during our unexpected (and long) hospital stay was receiving help without having to ask for it. Our church family came alongside us and provided us support in tangible, real, helpful ways. They provided us meals. They mowed our lawn. They did our laundry (who would EVER volunteer to do someone else s laundry?) Needing help is a humbling experience, and it was difficult for Brian and me. But we are created to live in community, and I know that my church family, Erik s Angels, showed His love to us in the most meaningful of ways that summer! In filling a need, transformation happened! Our family has been forever changed because of the love shown to us. The hospital staff witnessed the Body of Christ in action and learned about the power of prayer and community. And, the people of Willoughby United Methodist Church experienced growth and a renewed focus on outreach. There are hurting people in our church family that need the Body of Christ to be present for them. I challenge you to say you will join Erik s Angels in providing love in a tangible way. If you want to experience a transformation, contact the church office to say you can help! Kris Knotts - Erik s mom Jim and Chris Proto: Chris grew up in Willoughby Hills and attended WHUMC. Jim grew up in New Haven CT. We were married in the Chapel here on 11/11/2011.We were drawn to this church by that experience and by identifying a need for more in our lives though the loss of two beloved members in our family. We began attending church and found the WUMC Community and the message to be what we had been looking for. God truly has blessed us in leading us here. We both enjoy spending time with our grandchildren 2 months, 4 years and 12 years, and golfing together Shannon Hinton: I am so glad to be part of the church family! To tell you a little about myself, I live in Willowick. I very recently started a new job at Lincoln Electric. In July I will celebrate my 19th anniversary with my husband Wally. We have 3 beautiful daughters and 2 grandsons. I originally came to WUMC years ago for the Alpha program. I stopped coming for many years until a couple of months ago when I realized that I needed to come back. As far as how I've seen God at work in my life... I have witnessed miracles! My mother was at deaths door and God answered my prayers to save her. Also, my husbands best friend had a very bad stroke and things were not looking very promising for him but we started prayer chains and the prayers were answered! He is doing well now! But, it's not just in the big miracles that show me that God is at work in my life. It's in everything! The fact that my children and grandchildren are healthy, happy and safe. My husband and I both have jobs. We have a roof over our heads, food on the table and peace in our hearts. If those things aren't a blessing, I don't know what is! Thank you for taking the time to hear a little about me. July
9 Diane Corbett: I have been attending Willoughby United Methodist Church, off and on for about 40+ years. My uncle Milton Diehl was a member and an usher at WUMC for many years. My mother and I would always attend at Easter and Christmas with my relatives & family. After I moved into Lake County, I attended more regularly and have been for the past 7-8 years. I am now retired after having been in the Banking industry for 45 years. I love nature and see God every day in the world around me. I talk with him casually each day and pray each night and I feel he has helped me through some serious health issues I have had in the last couple years. Pastor Don said in one of his sermons recently, that God is piloting the boat and he can calm the waters or he can calm you. I always think about that and use it whenever I'm having a tough time. I also have a brother who is a police officer and I know that God watches over him and keeps him safe for me. Rae Kenny: My name is Rae Kenney I am a lifelong Willoughby resident and a 1974 graduate of South High School I was in the workforce for 38 plus years doing office work and accounting customer service and I am a notary.. Ashley O Loughlin: My name is Ashley O Loughlin, I am 27 years old and have been married almost two years come June, to my lovely husband Dean O Loughlin. We are expecting a baby girl on the way due July 5th. I currently work at Progressive Insurance full time as a sales agent. I was raised in an Episcopal church for many years, left and joined a non-denominational church after some politics and then headed to college. After college, I felt I needed to find a church that was home but had trouble for many years. I started coming to WUMC last April when I came to see the Easter play. I met some wonderful folks at the church that made me feel very welcome. At the time I was looking for a church home so I continued to come each week and decided this is where I wanted to be. I am happy to have found a wonderful church I feel comfortable, loved and accepted in and I look forward to raising our daughter and family at WUMC. Jen and Craig Ayala: Craig was confirmed into a Methodist church in Babylon, New York but then moved to Columbus,Ohio when starting high school. Jen was confirmed into Chapel United Methodist Church in Madison. After getting married, we would attend the church in Madison but wanted to find a church closer to home. We finally found what we were looking for after hearing Pastor Don give a sermon this past January! Jen teaches 7th grade math at Madison Middle School and Craig is a Manager of Training for the Flynn Restaurant Group. We are blessed in so many ways, God has always given us what we needed. It was not always when we asked, but always when it was in His plan. Our children keep us very busy! Zoe is 10 and loves drama club, singing and dancing, swim lessons and is even trying out gymnastics. Brody is 7 and he will be testing for his black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the end of the summer, plays soccer and enjoys swim lessons as well. Craig and Jen love to read, go to the theater, enjoy the outdoors and vacationing when we can. July
