1 The North Shore United Methodist August 2017 Dear North Shore, It s with a heavy, but excited heart that I share that I will be leaving North Shore this month to become a High School Math Teacher in Austin ISD. After a lot of wrestling, prayer, and reflection, I am confident that the Lord is calling me to the public school setting in an urban community. My heart and passion has always been encouraging, leading, loving, and equipping students; and I believe this next adventure will allow me to do that in a whole new way. My time at North Shore has been one of joy, growth, and adventure and I remain so thankful that the Lord brought me here. Together we ve ventured to Kerrville for MidWinters and Camp Eagle, Port Aransas for Beach Retreat, impacted many communities in our annual UMARMY summer mission trips, traveled to the Dominican, and lastly Youth Leadership Conferences in Uganda. We ve cooked more hotdogs than I m able to count for 5 th Quarters, began a Wednesday Night Bible Study, and traveled many miles during our Youth Weeks. We ve had messy nights, trips to the Corn Maze, ice skating, movie nights, Main Event, Top Golf, trampoline parks, days at the lake, trips to the pool, and many fun-filled times that are full of such great memories. But looking back, my favorite times remain the moments I was able to sit down and talk life and Jesus with our students. They remain my greatest blessing and favorite memory during my journey at North Shore. I don t know if you are aware, but we here at North Shore have some AMAZING students. More driven, hard working, loving, caring, and passionate than any other young men and women I ve had the pleasure of getting to know. They have big hearts and busy schedules, high expectations and a willingness to rise to the occasion. They are funny and goofy, but also incredibly insightful and wise. They are the kind of youth that every youth director hopes to have, and I feel so blessed to have been a part of their faith journey. My heart breaks at the thought of not seeing them every week; but I also have a peace and a knowing that our Good Good Father will provide. This decision was not made easy or taken lightly, but I m beginning to further understand that when God says, Go! Our only choice is to Go! To trust in His plan, His will, and His timing, despite our own fear and uncertainty. God has called me elsewhere and as hard as that is, I remain confident that our amazing students are left in good hands of God and this congregation. So love them well. Help them through this process. Come and cook a meal, mentor a student, dive into conversation, and above all else, listen. Listen to their struggles and celebrate their joys. Listen to their prayer requests and actually pray for them. Listen to the Spirit of the Lord that will guide your steps and words. God is calling you somewhere and in some way, and I know in my absence, some of you are being called to our youth ministry. My prayer is that you will be obedient to the call. Lastly, to my youths and their sweet families: I ve always said it, but you ve made a far greater impact on me than I believe I could ever make on you. Thank you for loving, encouraging, teaching, and living life with me. It has been such an honor and privilege to serve you. I m only up i35 if you need me and you can best bet this isn t the last you ll hear from your tiny half- Asian youth director. I m always here to cheer you on, call you out (lovingly of course), pray you up, and walk with you in the joys and struggles of life. YOU have made the past nearly three years, some of the greatest and I can t wait to see what God has in store for us next. You ve got my love, but more importantly you ve got the love of our powerful God, and I pray that no matter what comes your way you will lean into Him knowing that you are cherished, forgiven, chosen, and loved. Thank you North Shore for everything. Blessings, Melissa Arishita We Need You Sunday volunteers make our worship services run smoothly. North Shore is in need in a variety of capacities: Greeters are our first impression of how loving and friendly our church is whether it is a first time guest, repeat visitor or members. You make people feel welcomed and comfortable by your smile and a handshake. Ushers help by passing out bulletins on Sunday Mornings as well as give assistance during the worship service by helping with offering. Communion Helpers will help serve the sacraments once a month on the first Sunday of the month. If you are interested in signing up as a volunteer for any of these entities there is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex or call and talk to Myra in the church office at

2 U M W UNITED METHODIST WOMEN You are invited to our Annual Get Acquainted Luncheon given by the United Methodist Women Executive Committee!! We would like o get to know you better. Reading Circle Jan Booth Reading Circle met on Thursday, June 20th and discussed the well-liked book The Perfect Place. The book for August is Miss Brenda and the Loveladies One Woman s Brush with Prison by Brenda Spahn and Irene Zutell. Hope to see you on August 17th at 12:30 p.m. in the Youth Room! Fall Adult Bible Study Times Tuesday Morning Men s Bible Study 9-10am Starts September 12th Wednesday Evening Men s Bible Study 6:30pm On going Monday Night Women s Bible Study 6:30pm Starts September 11th Wednesday Morning Women s Bible Study- 10:30am Starts September 6th Tuesday Morning Adult Bible Study Open to starts September 12th Thursday Evening Adult Bible Study Open to Starts September 14th Music News Part 2 Spirited Traditional For those of you who attend the 11:00 service, you know we've made some changes to the music. Just so you know, the intent is not to abandon the traditional music that is the heart of that worship service. The primary goal is to broaden the music used in the service to include different musical styles. Nearly every congregation in the country debates musical style used in services. We call our early service "Contemporary" and the second service "Traditional." To some the Traditional label means old, boring, dull, lifeless, and otherwise unappealing. To others, the Contemporary label means loud, unsingable, dull, and repetitive. Being the seeker type, I have wrestled with "Blended" for a year or so. Finally I came across Spirited Traditional. This description said to me that the Traditional music we have strong ties to is still front and center, but it opened the way for variety of expression. That felt good to me. And I hope it will come to feel good for you too. Going forward, we'll use the best of both musical worlds, and more. We're looking to bring in some "Gospel" sound too. There'll be guitar for some of the congregational singing. There is a bit more singing, as we singing an opening song and using the song after the call to worship as "Praise Hymns." Because we're incorporating more newer music, the congregational singing will be led by the music team, rather than choir. I'm learning new music and spending a lot of time choosing music for the service. Change is not always bad, nor is it always for the better. Being diverse, welcoming and inclusive is what it is about. Your feedback and input is invited and important. Share with me or with Pastor Kim. Oh, by the way, we're looking for someone to play guitar regularly in the "Spirited Traditional" service, if you are interested. Marty Chrisman From the Endowment Committee What kinds of gifts can be made to our endowment fund? There are many types of gifts that could benefit our permanent endowment fund. A few of them are: Cash Real estate Personal property Stocks and bonds Life insurance Planned Gifts If you have questions please contact Dennis Shumaker at dwshumaker1@hotmail.com or Pastor kburke@northshore-umc.org PRAYER MINISTRY We pray all the time, but meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30 AM if anyone would like to join us in the Prayer Chapel in the Education Building. Please stop and say hi to anyone of us. We would be happy to speak to you, take a prayer request or just chat about prayer and how wonderful and privileged we feel it is to be able to take your concerns, joys, praises, etc. before the Lord. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will hear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 3 New Building News Things are progressing with our new building! I want to thank you for your diligence in beginning your pledges. For those of you who do not like pledging over a period of time we would gladly receive any form of donation you would like to make. At this point every dollar counts! We have all come together to make this happen. I m so proud to be a part of this amazing group of disciples! If you have not been able to attend our Church Council meetings I d like to keep you informed on the new building in our monthly newsletter. Texas Methodist Foundation (TMF) has approved us for a 2 million dollar project. The more pledges we receive or cash donations received for the project will increase what TMF will approve for a loan. We have decided on a plan that we are calling the A minus plan. This plan is the original plan submitted to the congregation minus the Sanctuary. At this time we are out of space for educational purposes so it makes good sense to build a multi-purpose education building for adults and children along with an additional space that will eventually serve as a narthex for the Sanctuary build and will include a chapel. As part of the bid process, we will be asking for several optional pieces, i.e., 1) narthex under roof, 2) narthex finished out including chapel, and 3) passageway from Faith building to Education building. Bidding these options gives us a better understanding of the costs associated with each option. The bids received will help determine which option(s) we can afford. We have entered into a contract with Lorraine Dailey to proceed with a full design development so that bids can begin. A time-line has been developed and time allocated for document review by the building committee. God willing we will be moving some dirt in late December. This is an exciting time in the life of our church. Thank you for your continued support. If you have additional questions please contact members of the building committee. Steve Yates, syates@gvtc.com, Lou Woodward, lou2@gvtc.com Lee Blackman, lsblackman@gvtc.com Lee McClure hlmcclure@gvtc.com or Pastor Kim kburke@northshore-umc.org. In Mission with You! Pastor Kim Donate Your Soles for the Soul Help us raise funds for our Mission Trip by donating your new, gently worn and used shoes! Shoes will be collected now until August 31st. Any style or type, children or adult, They can even be dirty just NO holes! Repurpose your shoes! By donating any gently worn, used shoes during our shoe drive it not only benefits the mission team by providing much needed funds for our trip but also benefits a micro-enterprise in a third world country. United Methodist Men Come Join us for breakfast at 7:30am Next Meeting Tuesday, September 5th. Have you ever thought about going on an Emmaus Walk but haven t? We are looking for men for the next Men s Emmaus Walk # 2173 September 28 October 1 at Camp Young Judea and the next Women s Walk # 2174 November 30 December 3. 4 Greetings Heroes! How awesome to celebrate and learn about the super powers God has and that God shares with us for VBS! We heard stories about Samuel anointing David, how Abigail saved the day, how Jesus was left behind learning in the temple, the Beatitudes that Jesus shared, and how we are all given the power of the Holy Spirit through Pentecost!!! We celebrated that God s heroes have Heart, Courage, Wisdom, Hope, and Power!!! We got to explore and demonstrate our super powers with Rec and Science! We got to hear and experience the Bible through Story Time and Snack! And we got to create with and use our super powers in Craft and Mission! We had a blast learning our mission to Do Good! Seek peace and go after it! A HUGE thank you to all our SUPERHERO volunteers who made the week possible!!! Thank you for giving of your time and superpowers to love on our kiddos and share Jesus with them!!! You may never know the full impact that your encouragement and love makes in their lives, but I promise it makes a difference!!! Thanks for being a Super Kingdom builder!!! We also had a blast at our Hill Country District Tween Camp at Mo-Ranch where we celebrated Christmas in July!!! We spent the weekend learning about spiritual gifts and discovering how God has uniquely created and gifted us!!! 4
