2 Hello family, Do you feel valued? I asked that question in church a few weeks ago and I have been thinking about it ever since. I looked again at the words of Jesus in Matthew 10:29-31, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. As I read these words I can t help but think that what Jesus is saying is that God the Father thinks you and I are very valuable to Him. Think about that, God thinks you are valuable! And He acted on that by sending His One and Only Son into the world to redeem you. So, one of the reasons Jesus came to earth as one of us was so He could bring value to our lives. International Day of Peace September 21st is the day designated by the United Nations to call people from around the world to pray for peace. On Wednesday, September 21st, there will be a gathering in the Chapel at 12:00 (Noon). Come and join us as we light candles, have scripture, and pray for peace. All are welcome. I think the woman who was healed by Jesus after bleeding for twelve years, when no one else could help her, would say she felt valued by Jesus. I think the one leper, who was part of a group of ten lepers that Jesus healed, when he returned to thank Jesus would say that he felt valued by Jesus. I would guess that blind Bartimaeus who called out for mercy from Jesus and received mercy and so much more would say he felt valued by Jesus. How about you? When has Jesus made you feel valued? Was it the time you felt overwhelmed and you called out for help and He sent His peace? Or maybe the time you prayed for a loved one in great need and received the answer to your prayer? I have another thought about this I will share with you next time, but for today, rest in the assurance of how much God loves you and wants you to know you are very, very, very valuable to Him. 6 Girl Friends in God Bible Study Starting September 12 7:00 8:30 PM Namesake, by Jessica LaGrone, is a six-week Bible study that explores the transformational power of God through the stories of biblical characters who met God and whose lives and names were changed forever. Every name tells a story. Names in Scripture were often given to tell the story of a person s identity, upbringing, or character. When God transforms lives, He often brings more than we bargained for: new identities, new journeys, even new names. As you meet Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, Naomi, Daniel, Peter, and the unnamed woman, you will discover that God wants to be just as intimately involved in your story, offering an identity that shines with the purpose for which you were created. For more information contact: Marty Kreger / kmkreger@juno.com World Food Day is held annually on October 16 to commemorate the founding of the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) global message Climate is changing, food and agriculture must too. The FOA aimed to raise levels of nutrition across the globe and improve agriculture productivity at all levels, enhance the level of rural populations and contribute to the growth of world economy. To participate on this special day, on Sunday October 16th, donations of canned goods can be given. The goods will be divided between McKinley Food Pantry and Willoughby Food Pantry. A box marked World Food Day will be available for donating goods in the cloister. And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field to it s very border, no shall you gather the gleaming after you harvest: you shall leave them for the poor and strangers: I am the Lord your God Leviticus 23:22 RSV For more information go to: September

8 Willoughby United Methodist Church opens its doors and hearts to all who need help. It has been over 53 years since we walked through those doors for the first time Thank You does not seem enough for all that our church has done for us and continues to do. But Thank You so very much is what we offer to everyone who helped us with a difficult move back to Willoughby and on-going health issues. God Bless You All! Ron and Nancy Zabjek Tamarac Blvd Apr 120 E ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have chosen to retire as Director of the Willoughby Food Pantry, effective June 30, Ecclesiastes 3:1 and 12 states there is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven. I made my decision after much prayer and with some degree of reluctance. I decided to slow down and look carefully at all things I was doing and realized I had to make some healthy changes in my life. The only way I knew this could happen was to do my best and trust God to do the rest. In spring of 1992, Pastor Dick Yaussey asked me to consider helping Louis Miller in the Food Pantry. She was my mentor and taught me how to operate the project. After her passing. I became the Director and I have had the pleasure of serving God and His children who are in need of a helping hand. I am grateful because I enjoyed going to the pantry. Many of the volunteers, as well as clients, have become friends. I want to thank all the people who have volunteered in the Pantry. They are exceptional - they are dependable, compassionate, loyal, they respect our clients and they have a great sense of humor. It is a great way to start your day in their company. The support of those who volunteered since the opening of the Pantry are always there to give advice and help when needed. The Pantry has grown over the past 16 years and will continue to do so under the capable hands of Deb Tolar, volunteers and Trustees of the Pantry. Deb is a life time member of WUMC and has served on many committees. She has been volunteering for the Pantry for about 18 months and is looking forward to serving as Director, as you might expect, some changes will happen. I hope all the changes will be for better service for our clients. Thank you for the privilege given to me to have been a part of this outstanding mission. I have been blessed, Joanne Ramsey COMING SOON!! Many of you have noticed the Website is not functioning. Unfortunately our Website host went out of business unannounced. We are delighted to share that a new faith-based host has been selected and will be contracted shortly. The new site will be up this fall. Thank you for your patience as we work through this situation. When one door closes, another one opens; and we are excited to be sharing the new Website with new features soon! 9 WILLOUGHBY FOOD PANTRY As part of the missions arm of WUMC, the Food Pantry serves Willoughby residents in need. Currently we provide monthly food assistance to between 20 and 30 households. Our goal is to increase the numbers being served by the Food Pantry. Moving forward, the Food Pantry will focus on food. All other items (furniture, household items, clothing, toys, etc.) can be distributed most efficiently by the McKinley Community Outreach Center. The Willoughby Food Pantry has been blessed through the years by the generosity of the congregation as well as many others from the community. This support makes it possible for us to continue to fulfill our mission. We are most grateful for your support.
