2 Hello family, I wrote in last month s article that I wanted to share with you some of the lessons I have learned over these past nine years as your pastor. Last month I shared with you the lessons of trusting in the God who never changes and learning to just be myself. This month I want to share with you the lesson that I learned that has surprised me. People are people and pretty much the same wherever I have been. I have served churches in rural communities (Barnesville), in small cities (New Philadelphia), in blue collar communities of coal miners and steel mills (Shadyside) and now in the suburbs of Cleveland and although the names have changed, people have remained relatively the same. Parents are concerned about their children and are there to support them in all of their activities. Fathers are concerned about supporting their families when the economy is weak and wonder how they will pay the bills. Mothers are concerned about the choices their children make and wonder about the influence the world will have on their families. The elderly are concerned about their health and who will be there to take care of them in their time of need and wanting not to be a burden on anyone. Everywhere I have served the problems have been the same: not enough jobs, teen suicide, death and dying issues, abuse of drugs and alcohol and the breakup of families. But also everywhere I have served, I have also found that people believe being a part of the church will make a difference in their families. I have also found that people actually believe the miracle of Christmas, that God is now with us in His Son Jesus so we are never left alone to figure out the problems of the world. And one more thing: I have also found that the people in the churches I have served believe the miracle of Easter, that God has defeated the greatest enemy we face when He raised His Son Jesus from the dead, and therefore nothing is impossible with God. Yes, people are the same everywhere I have been, looking for answers to deal with life s struggles, and finding those answers in the promises and presence of God who is Faithful and True! Amen, Pastor Don May

3 I was a stranger and you invited me in Matthew 25:35 The Open Door Ministry is looking for servants to welcome the community into our Church during the Outdoor Market and special events in downtown Willoughby. The Outdoor Market, which officially opens on May 5 and runs through October 27, will kick off the season with its annual Eco-Flea Market on Saturday, May 28. We need servants to staff our table each Saturday, with shifts available from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Last season, thanks to our many dedicated servants, WUMC welcomed over 2,400 visitors into our church during the market and special events!!! These visitors included vendors or shoppers who used our restrooms, and many others toured the church, visited the sanctuary, chatted with our greeters or just stepped inside to warm up or cool off. Anyone with a heart for hospitality is encouraged to contact Johanna Stuehr at or Edwina Jones at for more information or to sign up to serve. Sign-up sheets with open market dates are located in the Welcome Centers and side Sanctuary door. Church and Community groups are welcome to use our table to display flyers and brochures to promote upcoming events like the McKinley 5K run, Chili Sale, VBS, etc. Flyers should be left behind the Welcome Center Stand on the Open Door shelf. We open our doors to the community during Downtown Willoughby events including Classic Car Cruise-In, June 16; ArtsFest, July 21; and Last Stop Willoughby, August 18. Small Groups, Connection Groups and families are encouraged to participate as Greeters during these events and can contact Susan Gerber at or sueandmarkgerber@gmail.com for details or to sign up. Willoughby Outdoor Market Opening May 5 Join us for the official opening ceremonies at 10:00 AM. Pastor Don will conduct the Blessing of the Market. Mayor Robert Fiala will preside and other city officials, as well as other church leaders, have been invited to participate. Accompanist/Pianist (This is a paid position) Willoughby United Methodist Church is seeking an accompanist experienced in electronic keyboard and piano to join our music team on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A knowledge of Christian music would be beneficial. Please your resume to: wlbyumc7@ameritech.net May

4 MISSIONS & SOCIAL CONCERNS NEWS Adult Mission Team Flower & Plant Sale Saturday, May 19, :00 am Noon The Adult Mission team will once again conduct a Flower & Plant Sale to raise funds for this year's trip to Kentucky to work with the Christian Appalachian Project. 8 Who s Who at WUMC By Pastor Hazel We hope to help you learn about our new members by asking them if we can feature them in the Broadcaster. This month you will meet Nathan and Suzanne Baker and their three boys. Say hello to them the next time you see them! Nathan and Suzanne are native Ohioans. Suzanne is originally from Wickliffe, and Nathan is from Sunbury, which is just north of Columbus, (and where Pastor Christopher comes from!). They met at Baldwin Wallace College and got married at WUMC in They originally planned to get married at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, her home parish. However, about two months before the wedding that plan fell through, but fortunately Pastor Warren Campbell was going to co-officiate and was gracious enough to let them use WUMC. So when they moved back from Atlanta in 2007 and were looking for a church to call home, they took a shot at WUMC and continued to attend through 2010 until they moved to Columbus. As soon as they moved back to the area in 2013 they began attending regularly again. Suzanne earned her Masters and Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies from John Carroll. She now works as a School Psychologist. Nathan earned his Master of Science in Biology from Cleveland State and completed all but his dissertation on a PhD in Environmental Toxicology. He also earned his Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology. Several months ago they closed their own small business, and right now Nathan serves as a stay at home dad. He is currently in the process of discerning where God would have him, including looking into some form of Ministry. Their path has not always been straight. But, it seems every time they have sought God, He has been right there for them. They have had support from friends, family and even church along the way. Now, they have been able to give back, even when things appear to be too much. Currently, Suzanne serves on both the Committee on Education and as one of the music ministers on Sundays. Nathan serves on the Worship Planning Committee. As they grow, they are attempting to discern how God is leading them to use their education, gifts, and talents (sweet spots) on behalf of the church. It is a joy to see where God leads. They have 3 sons, Kade, Owyn, and Jude. All 3 have a lot of energy and definitely keep them on their toes. For those who don't know, Kade is on the Autism spectrum. That may present some challenges, but he also brings a lot of joy into their lives as well. It is important for them to have their kids with them in church even though sometimes their energy can be a bit hard to contain. Suzanne grew up in a Catholic family. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel school and parish. Nathan grew up in a very Methodist family. His grandfather was a ME pastor in the West Virginia annual conference, his sister is an ordained elder in the Susquehanna Annual Conference, and he has earned an MDiv from Candler, a UM Seminary. His father's side of the family was United Brethren and then EUB, before the merger. Suzanne and Nathan agree that the UMC is the best fit for them! May

11 Willoughby United Methodist Church Celebrates 200 Years of Serving God and Our Community Significant Memorial Gifts to the Church WILLOUGHBY COLLEGE - Under the auspices and financial support of the Methodist Conference the Willoughby College was founded in 1859 and successfully fulfilled its mission until 1882 when the building was leased by the Village for High School purposes. Still later in 1910 it was deeded to the Willoughby Village School board for the sum of $1.00. CHURCH BUILDING - It was Mrs. Julia French Boyce who on April 10, 1906 gave the congregation the original church building. Another memorable gift was that of Samuel and Mrs. Austin on December ll, 1927 the present pipe organ. CORNERSTONE - The following articles are contained in the Corner Stone of the Church: a Bible, Hymnal, Discipline, New York, Pittsburgh, and western Christian Advocates, Willoughby Independent, History of the Church, List of Pastors, the names of those on the Official Board and Building Committee, some small coins (dated 1906), and a dime (dated 1854). This dime was found in the mortar under the old corner stone. Also the proposition made by Mrs. Julia Boyce to the Official Board offering to build the church and its acceptance by the Board. TRUST FUND - On October 27, 1915, W. Penfield, Chairman of Board of Trustees, announced I m privileged to make the following report to you, a matter that I am sure will be an agreeable surprise to all members of our organization: I was recently advised by the trust offices of The Cleveland Trust Company, that on March 13, 1913, Julia F. Boyce, who died recently, deposited a trust fund consisting of $10,000 in 4-1/2 per cent bonds, and $750 in cash, the income from which she was to receive during her life time and on her death the income was to be paid to the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Willoughby. THE FERRIS HOUSE - The Ferris House was nearly one hundred years old. The property was originally owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ferris; but when Mrs. Ferris became old and had no income, Mr. and Mrs. Van Gorder arranged to pay her a regular sum to apply on the purchase price. This they continued to do until the full purchase price had been paid. After Mrs. Ferris' death, the property was deeded to the trustees of our church. In 1919 the house was razed and the land improved for a parking lot. PIPE ORGAN - On Sunday, December 11, 1927, the Austin Memorial Pipe Organ was dedicated with Bishop Theodore S. Henderson, District Superintendent Sheridan B. Salmon, and Pastor H. W. Peterson in charge of the ceremonies. Miss Mildred G. Maul was the organist and Ernst Birkholz, choir director. Some of the structural and musical features of the organ are as follows: the organ is a three-manual instrument of twenty-eight speaking stops. It is really composed of five complete organs, all in absolute control of the organist; namely, Great and Choir Organs located at the right of the chancel, Swell and Pedal Organs at the left, and the Echo in the rear of the auditorium. MUSIC FUND - On Sunday, June 19, 1932, members of the Church formally dedicated the Penfield memorial bronze tablet in honor of the late James VV. and Elsie M. Penfield, during their lives steadfast members and workers for the church. It was made possible by a bequest of $10,000 for a permanent choir fund left by the late Mrs. Glendora Penfield Hough, a daughter of the Penfields. Rev. H. W. Peterson, pastor of the church, presided. His sermon on "The Immortality of Influence" told of the lives and service to the church of the Penfields and their children, Gertrude, Glendora, Edith, and Raymond C. BAPTISMAL FONT - On September 10, 1933, the Ralph Lathrop Fuller Baptismal Font was formally dedicated. It was the gift of Mrs. Thalia R. Fuller in memory of her late husband. It was designed and built by the Gandola Brothers Company of Cleveland. The dedication program featured Dr. Charles F. Thwing, president of Western Reserve University, who made the presentation speech. RIDGE CHURCH FUND - On June 2, 1940, a memorial service was held in honor of the Ridge Methodist Church which formerly had a church of their own on Willoughby Ridge at the corner of SOM Center and Route 84. Bishop Lester Smith was the principal speaker. At the end of the service, A. W. Ferguson, representing the trustees of the Ridge Church, announced that, when the Ridge Church property was disposed of, a substantial part of the money received was to go to the Willoughby Methodist Church. This sum was added to the Julia F. Boyce Fund, but on the records it is still considered a separate fund. TOWER BELL - A surprise gift of a Memorial Bell to be placed on the tower of the Willoughby Methodist Church was received by a pleased congregation on Sunday, December 29, The bell given by J. Edward Weit, and his son and daughter, Larry Weit and Mrs. Maurice K. Lewis, was presented as a memorial to the late Mrs. Maude S. Weit, the wife and mother, and to the late Mrs. Evelyn Weit Judson, a daughter and sister of the donors. The bell weighs over 1,000 pounds with a diameter of nearly four feet and is placed on the tower of the church. It is electrically operated. Both the late Mrs. Weit, and the daughter, Mrs. Judson, were very active in the affairs of the church, Mrs. Judson being director of the choir at the time of her death. It was also revealed that Mrs. Weit had expressed the need for such a bell on the tower many times before her passing, and the family could think of no more fitting memorial than to fulfill this wish of hers. The bell was dedicated April 27, May
