1 President The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters Vol 35, Issue 4, May 2018 Looking Forward: PRESIDENT S MESSAGE So many wonderful people have stepped up to help with vacant committees, Sandy Garcia is busy this year, chair of Ways and Means and now she has volunteered to be MPI for Thank you, Sandy, Bobbie T. has also volunteered to get a seminar going for the 2019 year. The board gave her some teacher suggestions and when the final teacher(s) are chosen, you will be asked to vote on your choice. Keep watching for that coming soon. At the general meeting, last month, I shared my commitment to become more active in community service. As you may remember, the Christmas party will be all about charity, in addition, Bobbie T. has volunteered to provide a class for free in the October slot. We are calling this the Season of Giving and I m asking members to bring non-perishable items to the October paint in. You may also bring in items anytime and we will store them. The idea is to fill cloth bags for coach bound residents. Consider such items like shampoo, toilet paper, depends, tooth paste, Kleenex, paper towels, dish soap, hand soap. I think you get the picture. So please help us give back. Believe it or not, the San Diego County Fair is just around the corner and now is the time to enter your pieces. Please consider entering items this year. The more entries the more exposure decorative painting gets. I am available this year to deliver and pick up so if that is your stumbling block, problem solved! You must register by May 11, If I am delivering items for you, please bring them to the May paint in along with your receipt, I need to deliver on May 18,2018 As our chapter is giving back to membership with a free class and possible free Christmas party, raffles are very important. Therefore, we will have a raffle in July and October. Please consider donating any item, we do not need baskets filled with stuff. If you have extra paints, wood you will never paint, anything will do. If everyone uses their free class and attends 3 classes before Christmas (not including MPI) chapter will have spent almost $2400 this does not include the reduced membership costs. We need the raffles to keep us going. On a final note, Marilyn and I were having a conversation which stemmed from the board meeting, how do we increase the number of participants each month? I would like to offer my thoughts, forgive me if I sound like a teacher. If asked the question why do you come to monthly painting class? there may be a variety of reasons, I for one have only two. First and foremost is to learn. I learned to paint at PHP with wonderful, talented people around me, second was the creative environment such an experience provides. I would like to remind everyone that we are lifelong learners and consider the lessons each class provides. I gave up the idea of taking a class to find a place to put the piece, not all genres are to my liking, but each provides a new technique or idea I can apply later. So, for me, I paint to learn. I would like to invite those many members who have not joined us in a while, to come and learn with us again. Linda Art is the only way to run away without leaving home. -Twyla Tharp Linda Silvasy May 12, 2018 Peacock Bank Bag Onya Tolmasoff July 14, 2018 Feeling Froggy Lori Hillstead June 9, 2018 Fall Harvest Donna Carpenter In this Issue Upcoming Classes & Events... 2 Programs Report... 3 April Paint-In Photos... 4 April Paint-In Raffles... 6 PHP Garage Sale... 6 Sunshine & Birthdays... 7 May Potluck News Christmas Party... 8 Sue Bond Stash Sale... 8 Del Mar Fair Report... 9 Membership Report... 9 Board & General Mtg Minutes 10 Jan-Feb-Mar Financial Report.. 11 PHP Calendar Conventions Map to Paint-In Class Signup Sheet List of Officers Membership Form Page 1 The Heritage Heartbeat May 2018

7 Pot Luck Sunshine Individuals born in the month of May are extremely understanding, resolute and enthusiastic. Their physical attractiveness coupled with their mental strength makes them absolutely irresistible. Extremely hardworking and always on the move, these people always keep themselves occupied with something or the other and detest wasting time. As charming as these Mayborns are, they always claim the attention of almost everybody around them and their oratory skills make sure that the attention stays. Zealous and energetic, not only do they exhibit a keen interest in arts, music and literature, but they also tend to have an imaginative bent of mind. That certainly describes our members who have a birthday this month! The birthstone for May is the emerald and the flower is the lily of the Valley. Zodiac signs are Taurus (until May 20) and Gemini (May 21 onward). Many famous people were born in May including Bing Crosby, Audrey Hepburn, Orson Welles, Florence Nightingale, Sally Ride, Bob Hope, Billy Joel, Benjamin Spock, George Clooney and Rosemary Clooney. Also Harry Truman, Irving Berlin, Katharine Hepburn, George Lucas, Henry Fonda, Liberace, Perry Como, John Wayne, John F. Kennedy and Clint Eastwood. Special observances and holidays are Saturday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby and World Naked Gardening Day. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken for Mexico's Independence Day the most important national holiday in Mexico which is celebrated on September 16. Mother s Day is celebrated on May 13. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on May 19. May Birthdays Linda Silvasy... 3 Cynthia Smith... 3 Carol Ganzi... 4 Neva Anderson... 7 Marilyn Dixon Linda Martin Janet Johnson Linda Camp Potluck Lunch Other May days worth celebrating are World Turtle Day on May 23 and Memorial Day and National Burger Day on May 28 although Memorial Day is really May 30 but the holiday was moved to the last Monday in May to allow for a three day weekend. Memorial Day is to honor all Americans who died while in military service. On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply, all 50 states adopted Congress' change of date within a few years. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, an auto race which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since Originally it was held on Memorial Day itself, and since 1974 it runs on the Sunday preceding the Memorial Day holiday. PHP members celebrating a birthday in May are Linda Silvasy and Cynthia Smith on May 3; Carol Ganzi on May 4; Neva Anderson on May 7; Marilyn Dixon on May 21; Linda Martin on May 22; Janet Johnson on May 23 and Linda Camp on May 28. If you know of a member (current or past) who needs a get well card or even missing you, thinking of you card, please let me know. Lunch for our May Paint-in will be pizza, salads and dessert. Bring your own cold drink for the day. Coffee will be brewing. Jeanne Robert Marilyn D, imtwincrazy@gmail.com Marilyn Dixon Page 7 The Heritage Heartbeat May 2018

10 Secretary Secretary Palomar Heritage Painters Board Meeting Minutes April 7, 2018 A Board Meeting of the Palomar Heritage Painters was held on April 7, 2018, at the home of President Linda Silvasy, in Valley Center, CA. The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. by Linda Silvasy. ATTENDANCE: Linda Silvasy, Bobbie Takashima, Carol Voyles, Debi Stivers, Sandy Garcia, Leslie Pilcher, Marilyn Dixon, and Linda Camp. SEMINARS: Bobbie Takashima will be accepting input from the board, regarding various instructors and their projects, to be considered for future seminars. PROGRAMS: Carol Voyles and Debi Stivers, 1st Vice Presidents, Programs, began a discussion concerning the October 13 Paint-In date, which was "open" on the PHP calendar. It was stated that October is typically the start of the holiday preparation time, and that we should consider a Christmas project, as we had none on our schedule this year. Also, for that particular Paint-In, the theme would be a "Season of Giving" class, to provide for members of the San Marcos Mobile Home Estates, especially those who may be house-bound or in need. Ideas included providing tote bags or baskets, which we would fill with toiletries, donated by the PHP members. Members would bring at least 5 or 6 toiletry items, or more if possible. Bobbie Takashima very generously volunteered her teaching time for the October 13th Paint-In, which will have a 40 person maximum capacity. For future classes, from April 2019 on, when member voting has been completed, the board will review the outcome, for final class decisions. Linda Silvasy made a motion for this, and was passed by group. OUTSTANDING MEMBER AWARD: President Linda Silvasy brought up the idea of having an award for PHP members, to be recognized for work done, or their contributions in various ways. The board can get suggestions from members and then decide. Linda Silvasy made a motion, Sandy Garcia seconded, and motion passed. CHARITY: Debi Stivers suggested that raffle money collected from the Christmas raffles, could be possibly donated to a charity of choice. BEGINNING PAINT CLASSES: President Linda Silvasy discussed the idea of having a "bring a friend to paint" month, to recruit new painters, or having a class to involve younger painters, on a separate date from our Paint-In day. Having a Girl Scout group participate was discussed, but it may be necessary to go to their location. Linda Silvasy and Leslie Pilcher were going to research options. TREASURER: Marilyn Dixon, Treasurer, discussed the question of providing mileage costs for instructors, as it had been brought up in recent months. The wording in our contract with instructors, is that the mileage is at their own expense. FUND RAISING: To replenish our funds, and/or for charity, having raffles on a regular basis is needed. For the month of April, Linda Camp and Marilyn Dixon were coordinating raffle prizes. The next raffle months will be July, then October, and then the December Christmas party. It would be helpful if members can assist in supplying raffle items. It was discussed that we should investigate listing some of the "garage sale" painting items online, at various "Destash groups," which may be a good fund raiser. Linda Silvasy made a motion, and Carol Voyles seconded it, and all agreed. A trial run will be set up shortly. Linda Silvasy moved to adjourn the meeting at 1:40 p.m., seconded by Sandy Garcia. Respectfully submittted, Linda Camp, Secretary Linda Camp Palomar Heritage Painters General Meeting April 14, 2018 A general meeting, held at the San Marcos Mobile Home Estates, was called to order by President Linda Silvasy at 12:50 p.m. The following announcements were made: Board Meeting: A board meeting was held last Saturday, April 7th. Previously, the month of October was an "empty month," but at the Board Meeting, Bobbie Takashima graciously volunteered to teach the October class as a fund raiser, which will be a Christmas piece. For October, the free class coupon cannot be used. PROGRAMS: Per Carol Voyles & Debi Stivers, the May project will be the "Peacock Bank Bag" taught by Onya Tolmasoff. The June project will be the "Fall Harvest" taught by Donna Carpenter. The July project is "Feeling Froggy" taught by Lori Hillstead, and if you would like the "kit" which includes the wood and thermometer insert, it is an additional $20 cost. See Debi or Carol for further information. CHARITY: The PHP chapter has been called "The Chapter with a Heart" in the past, and in keeping with that, we will have our "Season of Giving" campaign in the coming months. PHP members are asked to donate at least 5 toiletry items to provide to the San Marcos Mobile Estates residents who are in need. In addition, for the raffles in July and October, if members can bring something, so that funds can be donated to the Mobile Home Estates or other charity. DEL MAR FAIR : The time is approaching for submissions to the Del Mar Fair. (a.k.a. San Diego County Fair). Registration deadline is May 11, and pieces are to be submitted by May 18 & 19. Entry fees are $8 per item. Please see Charlotte Hicks for further information. BEGINNING PAINT CLASS: There is discussion to plan a "Bring a Friend to Paint" class, which will be scheduled aside from regular class. WAYS & MEANS: Per Sandy Garcia, there are 3 pieces so far: from Sue Bond, Sandy Garcia, and Linda McFadden. In addition, Bobbie Takashima announced she will provide a piece. The drawing is scheduled for September. Meeting adjourned at 1:10 p.m. Respectfully submittted, Linda Camp, Secretary Linda Camp The Heritage Heartbeat May 2018 Page 10
