1 Newsletter January 2016 Volume 30 Number 1 Edited by January 7, 2016 We will have our business meeting at 10:30 AM at the Lake Mansion, 250 Court Street, Reno, in the Garden Pavilion (room behind the mansion.) The docent led tour of Tahoe, a Visual History at the Nevada Museum of Art will begin at 11:45 and last an hour. You must have pre-registered and prepaid for the tour; or if you are a member of NMA, you will need to show your membership card upon entering. 2 Wow, a new year is beginning and so is the adventure of my new beginning as the President of our wonderful guild. I am excited about this new year. All the new classes and programs, it should be fun. I would like to ask for your patience while I get my feet on the ground and get settled in. I d like to welcome the new officers, and thank them and everyone who volunteered for a position in the guild. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. You, the members of the Great Basin Basketmakers, are the most incredible group of folks I have ever worked with, or been associated with. Your knowledge is amazing and your desire to share that knowledge is truly appreciated. Together we can truly accomplish our mission Keeping the art of basket making alive. I look forward to help lead us into the next year. Please, let me know if you have any questions, comments or helpful hinds. I am always looking to be better! Thank you Bonnie Basket Resolutions for a New Year: (author unknown) I will learn a new technique or make some little change in what I do, whether I m a beginner or a seasoned weaver. My mind is always tempted to close up, so I resolve to keep it open in this way. I am going to accept what I do and create in an unselfconscious way, even if my basket seems different, because this is how I develop my personal aesthetic. I promise to look more and see more art this year not only baskets, but the whole spectrum. I need to honor all art as visions of their makers, even if it s radically different. I resolve to take my art somewhere new a new show, new gallery, new gift. The world is waiting for what only I can offer. Even if I make new things, I promise to remember my connection to those ancient histories that have gone before. I resolve to help our guild remain the strong, supportive group that it is maybe write something for the newsletter, volunteer to work on a show, befriend a new member, and look around to see where I m needed. I want to continue weaving the chain of friendship that is GBB. I will remember the words of author Jan Phillips...you are here to co-create the world, to add your vision, to make visible what is not yet seen, to manifest that which is in you. 3 Plaited Heart Basket Saturday, January 16, 2016 (Jailhouse) 9:30-3:30 will be teaching a plaited heart shaped basket made from painted paper and trimmed with ribbon, raffia, yarn, beads, etc. The paper for the basket will be painted and cut, ready for weaving. We will paint one sheet of paper to take away for a second basket. Can choose between pink or red painted paper. Materials Fee: $12 Tools: Scissors, copper clips, cutting mat, ruler. For more info contact fordtraveler@gmail.com Five Point Star Base Basket Thursday, February 18, :30-3:30 Susan Lester will be teaching a 10 round reed five point star based basket. The finished sides could be a variety of choices, i.e. ridge weave, twined, 3 rod wale. You choose. No student experience needed, just patience for the start. All are welcome. Bring a sack lunch. Show & Tell/Lunch 12-1 PM. Program starts at 1:00 PM. Membership dues for Great Basin Basketmakers are $25/yr, $10 extra per household member per yr. Dues are to be paid annually in January. Membership includes monthly newsletter, access to large library and reduced workshop rates. Our Mission Statement The main focus of the Great Basin Basketmakers is to make baskets, to learn everything possible about the tradition and techniques of basketry and to pass this knowledge along to others.
