1 Heritage Happenings Heritage Decorative Artists of Southeastern Michigan An Affiliated Chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters, Inc. FacebooK: Heritage Decorative Artists The Westfield Center, 2700 October 2017 Volume 30 Number 5 President s Message Happy Fall Everyone! Well, at least I think it s fall, first it was and now it isn t. Weather, we certainly can t do anything about it but complain, right? Speaking of fall.the board has had a meeting and decided to do the Colors of Fall Luncheon in I am hoping that all general members are excited to do the same. Karen Lavella and a few other members looked into a smaller venue at the Country Club on Grosse Ile. We will no longer have the silent auction and will be relying on the boutique and the basket raffle to generate money sales. So EVERYONE is being asked to submit a basket of quality with a painted item. If you can t afford or want to do a basket by yourself you can team up with someone. If you are hosting a table, perhaps you can have only 6-8 people at your table. The smaller number will make it easier to not be stressed out by this event. We will be discussing this in more detail at the general meeting and as the year progresses. When you come to the general meeting on October 18th, please be prepared to vote on a new board for Inside the newsletter you will find a roster of individuals who have signed on to the board. ALL POSITIONS are open to everyone and just because someone has volunteered for a spot, you can run for that position as well. Being a board member helps you make decisions as to what the group will be doing in the year ahead. Don t forget to sign up for Sheri Redd s color pencil seminar which will be at Westfield on October 28th and sign up for our Christmas Party/Meeting that Barb Reinholz scheduled for December 13th. We will be painting an after meeting project with Jean Michael, so READ your newsletter to get all the information. See you at the meeting!! Sandy 1
2 Memory Box Program This box is donated by Heritage Decorative Artists and h a n d p a i n t e d b y a decorative artist participating in the Memory Box Program. The Memory Box Program is a group of decorative artists who donate their time and money to paint boxes for grieving families. Each box is painted with great love and a sincere wish to reach out in support and understanding. As artists we hope that this box brings you some small comfort and the knowledge that many people understand that your child was special and very, very loved. 4 Heritage Decorative Artists General Meeting - August 23, 2017 Reports The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President, Sandy Bagger. Members welcomed Pam as a new member this evening. A brief summary of the June 2017 General Meeting Minutes were discussed. No additions or corrections were made. The treasurer s Report was given and a motion to accept the report as printed was made by Sophie Green and seconded by Barb Reinholz. Sandy Bagger asked Sophie if rooms were reserved for October 2017 and 2018 for both general and board meetings at Westfield Center. Sophie will reserve tomorrow at the front desk and Gale Copple, Treasurer, will meet with her to pay for the year. Sandy Bagger gave out a copy of the Incentive Seminar Report to all Memebers. Nancy Forbes indicated that the Doreen McLain (Batik) Seminar went well and that HDA actually made $70 on the seminar. Old Business There was no update on the website as Jean Michael was not able to attend the meeting. No update on the Color Pencil/Watercolor Pencil Seminar with Sheri Redd in the fall with a date to be determined. Sandy Bagger informed members that the Memory Box Program was still in effect and had spoken with the liaison for Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. She asked all members to please participate and take a box home to paint for next meeting. Barb Reinholz, chairperson, for the Christmas party handed out sign up sheets. The event will take place on December 13, 2017 at Magdaleno s Ristorante. Cash Bar is available. Meals will include pop, coffee or tea. Members were asked to dress for the event. A raffle will be held and an ornament exchange will take place by members who participate. The event will take place from 5:30 9:30 pm. Deadline to sign up is December 1 st. New Business A discussion ensued regarding our fundraiser, Colors of Fall. Many members believe that since we have lost many members that the event needed to be pared down to a more manageable activity. Joan Hemsworth gave many ideas on how to pare down the event with other members agreeing. No member volunteered to be chairperson for the event, but several have agreed to various duties, i.e., tickets, boutique, and treasurer. It was agreed that we would shelve the matter until the October meeting when members could think more about the tasks needed to complete this event as HDA has become a very small group. Karen Lavella agreed to contact the liaison for the Grosse Ile Country Club and ask if we could reserve the date of October 13, 2018 and perhaps put a deposit down now to reserve the room in cases we go ahead with our plans. Sandy Bagger started a discussion about the cancellation of the HOOT Bus Trip to Columbus, Ohio. Members all discussed big changes in the industry at the HOOT event and possible reasons for this change. Members who did attend for more than one day, also came to this conclusion. We will look into the possibility of attending next year if we have enough people to participate. Sandy Bagger held a discussion concerning getting a roster together for the 2018 Board of Directors. Several people have agreed to stay on in their positions: Sandy will stay as President; Joan Hemsworth as Newsletter; Judy Turner as Membership; and Charlene Wenzel as Brush Bucks. At the October General Meeting there will be a vote on all positions. Kath Riddle indicated to members that she would be painting a project to see if she would be able to teach it at a later date either for a Learn to Paint or for HDA members. Sandy Bagger asked members to help with a questionnaire sent to her from the SDP Recording Secretary about our group. As no further information was in need of discussion, a motion was made by Gale Copple and seconded by Tess Richardson to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Sandy Bagger, President for Jean Michael, Secretary 4
