1 The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters Vol 36, Issue 2, February 2019 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE February 9, 2019 Cup of Blessings Ramona Jacobs And a lot of fun with Terry Holte and her whimsical birds, I know I enjoyed the style the project presented. Having an opportunity to try something new is a great way to expand your knowledge in the art world, thanks Terry, a truly great class. As our new year begins I wish to encourage each of you to become more active in our chapter, it does take a village to create a successful organization. I would like to thank Cheryl Powell, Virginia Davies and Cynthia Megill for doing our audit this year. They carefully looked over our records and commented how organized Marilyn is, it made their job very easy. As we begin this year, I thought it would be appropriate to have a few reminders for our paint-ins. First, be sure to silence your phones, it is distracting during class, next take a moment to visit with everyone who is there that day. We often stay within our own groups and miss out on enjoying each other, after all, we all love to paint and that is our common link. Be sure to volunteer to bring something for lunch at least once during the year, it really helps Candy, so she doesn t have to ask for help, and once again, thank you Candy for volunteering. If you have any questions regarding chapter, please let me know, if I can t answer the question, I will find the person who can. We need someone to organize Ways and Means, I have some donations but need someone to do the tickets. Let me know if you are interested. And again, thank you Debi and Carol for organizing a birthday celebration for Virginia it was so thoughtful and I know she appreciated it. Linda Page 1 President Our project calendar is out (page 9), thank you Debi and Carol for all your hard work. Be sure to choose your projects and plan your calendar, we want full classes. 3 Birthday Surprise: NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) The day started out with a huge surprise for one of our members whose birthday happened to be on our painting day- Virginia Davis. A longtime member of our chapter - she has volunteered on many chapter events including Mystery Paint in s and Christmas parties. HAPPY BIRTHDAY- VIRGINIA and many more. January class: We were so lucky to have Terry Holte teach our first class of 2019 before she moves to central California. We had a very full class-all painting little birds on their bags using materials supplied by the teacher-sosoft Fabric paint from Deco Art and Identi-pens. Terry was nice enough to bring an apron with the pattern on it for a raffle prize- which was won by Kenna Perrin. Thank you, Terry it was a lovely day. Hopefully we will see her again since she hinted she could possibly submit a project for our 2020 calendar. The members brought all sorts of goodies for our lunch which was organized by our new hospitality volunteer- Candy Sciarretta. We also had another birthday that day- Donna Eledge which we also celebrated. February 9 th Class: Cup of Blessings: Ramona Jacobs will be teaching our final class from the 2018 project selections. Come join us to paint a lovely tray to have at home for display or use it for serving coffee or tea. Deco Art paint is used as the medium. Deco Art Weathered Wood is used for prep before class. Please bring a white chalk pencil. Patterns available In addition: This is the last month we will be taking signups for the Mark Polomchak watercolor seminar held the second weekend of March 2019 sponsored by the S. D. Brushwhackers. This seminar will be held in El Cajon. Two projects offered- $95.00 each day. March 16 th Class: Mystery Paint In: Mystery Paint In class is filling up. The chairman is Sandy Garcia and I know her team of volunteers will put on a fun and exciting day. Reminder, class is the third Saturday of the month. Cost: $30.00 Page 3 The Heritage Heartbeat February 2019
4 1st Vice-Presidents Programs Secretary NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) continued April 13 th Class: A Bit of Aloha Hibiscus: The first class of our new calendar starts us out with this beautiful flower being taught by Lori Hillstead. This is a very elegant piece and can be painted on any surface. Lori displays it on an 11- inch square plate. We have had a challenging time finding a square plate at these dimensions, so Lori suggested using a 9 ½ inch plate by BearwithUs. If interested in the 9 ½ plate, we can pick them up at the Vegas Convention if you let us know. Estimated cost $8.00. Paints used are Deco Art. Patterns available Carol Voyles and Debi Stivers PHP Board Meeting Minutes January 5, 2019 A Board Meeting of the Palomar Heritage Painters was held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 in the meeting room at San Marcos Mobile Home Estates. The meeting was called to order at 9:45 a.m. by President Linda Silvasy. ATTENDANCE: President Linda Silvasy, Treasurer Marilyn Dixon, Website & Newsletter Editor Leslie Pilcher, 1st Vice Presidents, Programs Carol Voyles & Debi Stivers, Hospitality Chair Candy Sciarretta, and Secretary Linda Camp. BUDGET: Treasurer Marilyn Dixon reviewed 2019 Budget items with the Board. During the expenses discussion, Linda Silvasy said she would be taking the "history" items for PHP, and scanning them. Afterwards, Leslie Pilcher would put this on the website. In addition, Linda Silvasy is planning to attend the Society of Decorative Painters Conference & Expo in May. Leslie Pilcher pointed out that the PHP website domain name will be renewed in September; it's renewed every 5 years. Linda Silvasy made a motion to approve the budget, Carol Voyles seconded it, and all members voted and approved the motion. SEMINARS: It appeared that with the various time constraints, and other issues, it did not seem feasible for a seminar to be scheduled on the 2019 calendar. PROGRAMS: The July 2019 Paint-In, will be held the 3rd Saturday of July, July 20th, instead of the 2nd Saturday. Also, the calendar for 2019 classes, will be published soon. MYSTERY PAINT-IN: There has been some confusion with the cost for Mystery Paint-In, as it had stated $30 for members, and $35 for non-members. However, MPI is only for PHP members, and non-members are not included. This is being corrected. HOSPITALITY: Candy Sciarretta is taking over the food coordination for Pot Luck, from Marilyn Dixon. Marilyn pointed out, that it is important for all of us to help with cleaning up the tables, and staying to straighten out the room after our Paint-Ins. MEMBERSHIP: Leslie Pilcher mentioned that some former members are signing up for classes, but have not yet renewed their PHP memberships. Hopefully this will be corrected soon. Commencing in July, membership costs will be increased $10, to a total of $25 per year only for those people who continue to required mailed copies of the newsletter. Leslie Pilcher made a motion for this, Marilyn Dixon seconded the motion, and all members voted and approved. OPEN ITEMS: Linda Silvasy pointed out that this will be her 3rd and final year as PHP President, as well as the 3rd and final year for Secretary Linda Camp. Other positions may be opening, and others still need to be filled, so announcements will be made for volunteers. The meeting was adjourned by Linda Silvasy at 12:40 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Linda Camp, Secretary Linda Camp The Heritage Heartbeat February 2019 Page 4

8 Sunshine There were four US presidents born in February, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln who each had a holiday named after them until 1971 when the holiday was moved as part of 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act becoming known as President s Day, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers; William Henry Harrison and Ronald Reagan. The birthstone for February is the Amethyst, a variety of Quartz that carries a spectacular purple color that ranges from a blend of deep violet and red to a lighter lilac hue. Ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset. It is said to strengthen relationships and give its wearer courage. At one time, only royalty could wear the gem. Some special things to celebrate in February are as follows Feb. 1 is National Bubble Gum Day, National Freedom Day and No Politics Day (with this year being the exception, of course). Feb. 2 is Groundhogs Day (I did love that movie and could watch it again and again) and Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast day. Feb. 3 is Super Bowl Sunday (sure hope they have some good commercials this year!); Feed the Birds Day and the Day the Music Died (1959 when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash). Feb. 5 is Chinese New Years: Chinese year 4717 Sign: Pig, a Yin year, and is also National Weatherman Day. Feb. 11 brings us Clean out Your Computer Day, Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day, Make a Friend Day, National Inventors Day and White T-Shirt Day Feb. 14 is Valentine s Day as well as National Organ Donor Day Feb. 18 is President s Day and National Drink Wine Day Feb. 22 is George Washington's Birthday, Be Humble Day, International World Thinking Day, National Margarita Day and Walking the Dog Day Jeanne Robert shares her birthday on February 6 with some famous people Ronald Reagan who died at age 93, Queen Anne Stuart of Britain, ; died at age 49. She was the reigning queen of Great Britain and Ireland from 1702 to 1714 AD. She was a controversial queen, as she was considered to be unfit for the throne. She got pregnant 17 times but was unable to give an apt successor to the throne of Britain. William, one of the children she gave birth to, was the only child who lived. However, he, too, died at the age of 11. Bob Marley who died at age 36 of malignant melanoma. Babe Ruth who died at age 53. Jeanne Robert... 6 Carolyn Miller... 7 PHP Member Carolyn Miller shares her February 7 birthday with actors Ashton Kutcher (40), James Spader (58), Chris Rock (53) and Miguel Ferrer who died of cancer at age 61. Miguel Ferrer was the son of Jose Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney. Also born on February 7 was Desmond Doss, a US Army corporal who served during World War II. He was a combat medic who saved 75 lives during the Battle of Okinawa for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. A Hollywood movie titled Hacksaw Ridge, which was directed by Mel Gibson, was made on his heroic deeds in the Battle of Okinawa. He died at age 87. 10 SDP Liaison SDP News Registration for SDP Conference, Party In The Heartland in Wichita May is open. Some classes have sold out. The new museum will open the same week at SDP Headquarters. The board is planning some new and exciting things this year so, this is a good year to attend. All the boxes of beautiful artwork from the DAC museum have now been opened. The staff is now busy documenting every piece so they can build the displays. Even though there are no more boxes to open, the staff will continue the Facebook Live Broadcasts every Friday at 9:00 AM (Pacific time). January 18, they broadcast from our old building that we sold a few years ago. Miho and Jennifer gave a great tour of the entire place. It seems the new owners are planning some extensive renovations. The walkway paved with the Memorial Bricks many of us purchased to raise funds will be taken out. The good news is the owners are giving the bricks back to us. The SDP staff will pick them up and store them until the board can decide how to use them. Jennifer will broadcast something new and different every week, so tune in when you can. Carol Ganzi The Heritage Heartbeat February 2019 Page 10

Merle Avery & Leslie Pilcher If you ve been using our Resource Tab on the PHP website, you may have noticed that several links are out-of-date. I m hoping that there have been some new resources that are coming to replace some of the lost one. I know there are many new artists websites and I will try to add the ones I know. However, I NEED your help in identifying these. If you have discovered a decorative artist, a supply source, or educational resource that we don t have listed, PLEASE drop me a short to let me know.
