Prayer for a Sick Person Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need, visit and relieve your sick servants. Look upon them with a sense of goodness, preserve them from temptations, and give them patience to accept the suffering they must endure. God of heavenly power, by the might of Your command, You drive away from our bodies all sickness and all infirmity. Be present in Your goodness with these, Your servants, so that their weakness may be banished and their strength restored. Relieve their pain, guard them from all danger, and restore them to full confidence in Your loving care. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. Faithful Navigator s Corner My Brother Sir Knights, At the risk of repeating myself, which I am doing because the information is so important, if you are like me, then repetition is very important to remembering and hopefully taking action, Our officer installation will take place on Saturday 21, September. It will be held at Corpus Christi after the 4:30 PM mass. Just as last year, the ceremony will take place in
2 the chapel. It should begin at approximately 6 PM. Following the ceremony we will have beverages and a short social period followed by a catered dinner in the church hall. We are fortunate to again have Bruno Catering. They provided the delicious dinner last year. All Sir Knights are encouraged to attend. We will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our Assembly. If any of you have photos or other memorabilia please contact SK Pete Karculias. He would like to put something together for all to see both at the dinner and on our web page. Our Veterans Dinner is coming up on Sunday 10 November. SK Dave Davis has volunteered to chair the event again this year. For all those who were on the committee last year, please contact Dave and let him know you will be on the committee again this year. We want to make this an even greater success. Start now collecting items for the Silent Auction table. Also, if you have military memorabilia, plan to bring it. As our membership numbers decline, it is important that you turn to your council members and seek new members for the 4th Degree. New members make for a strong council and allows us to continue our patriotic work. May God Bless you all. Vivat Jesus! S.K. John Myers Faithful Navigator jtm_92@cox.net Father McGivney In August we observe the birthday of our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, born 2 August 12, 1852 and the anniversary of his death on August 14, The McGivney Guild was established to advance the cause for beatification and canonization of Father Michael McGivney. As a Knight, you are encouraged to join our founder s Guild. You can do so by visiting the Guild s web site at l. The McGivney Prayer God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Birthdays Congratulations to these Sir Knights celebrating birthdays in August. We would like to assemble a scrapbook for this occasion. If you have anything to share, photos, anecdotes or other memorabilia, please let Pete Karculias know. A Veteran s Story From time to time we will select a veteran from our Assembly to feature in an article about his service. This month we feature Joe Kerns. (updated from August 2004) Joe Kerns (left) Receives Knight of the Year award for from PGK Joe Keaney. Sir Knight Joseph Kerns was born in 1921 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Joe likes to say that he and two brothers were born on Church property because in 1928 a Church was built on the site. The church still stands there today and Brother Joe visited it in After graduation from St. Joseph s High School in Philadelphia, our Knight worked at the Ben Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia for 3 a time before enlisting in the US Army Air Corps in He trained as a mechanic at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois and then was assigned to Anchorage, Alaska. After 14 months Brother Joe volunteered for gunnery school and trained near Las Vegas after which he was transferred right back to Anchorage, Alaska. He was assigned to a bomber squadron which moved to the Aleutian Islands. Our Knight served as a waist gunner on a B-24. After a number of missions, Brother Joe s B-24 suffered severe battle damage after being attacked by enemy fighters. With one engine out and the other damaged, the crew elected to attempt to land on the Kamchatka peninsula rather than ditch in the frigid Bering Sea. Expecting to repair, refuel and take off, the crew was instead detained by the Russians. Along with the crews of two other B-24 s and 5 B-25 s, they numbered about 48 officers and men. All were shuttled deeper into Russia. They were told they were Americanski spies. They were interned near Tashkent until February 1945 when their escape was arranged. Their number had now grown to 60 as other crewmembers joined them. The Russians arranged with the US Embassy to allow the internees to depart Russia without anyone knowing about it. They were transported by truck and train, eventually arriving in a camp near Tehran, Iran. From there they went to Cairo, Tunisia and finally Casablanca where they finally boarded a troop ship and returned to the US. It was not until 1986, during a reunion at Colorado Springs, that the US publicly recognized their status as Prisoners of War. Joe received his POW medal from Lt. General McInerney. Brother Joe has been interviewed by both the History Channel and the Discovery
4 Channel. Their story was an episode of Secrets of World War II on the History Channel. In 1987, a book was published detailing the story of American aviators interned by Russia during World War II. The book is Home From Siberia by Otis Hays Jr., and is still available in paperback: ISBN Following his world tour, Brother Joe worked installing TV antennas on Long Island and then worked for a trucking company. He then went to school to learn the new electronic data processing equipment just prior to the introduction of the IBM 1401 computer, one of the first successful business systems. Brother Joe left Long Island in 1968 to live in Tucson where he worked for the Southern Arizona Bank for 17 years before retiring. Joe lost his beloved wife in 1993, and also three brothers. Joe also has a sister in Florida. Joe has been a Knight for 64 years. He has held the offices of Recorder and Chancellor but preferred to work in the trenches. His hobbies include hiking and photography, Joe s health has declined somewhat and he now resides in the Arizona Veteran s home in Tucson. He loves to have visitors. His hard work and dedication over the years have earned him Knight of the Month recognition several times. His contributions to his council s pancake breakfasts, religious devotions, and not the least, the donut sales program, have been extraordinary. Brother Joe s selfless devotion to the Church, the Knights and his fellow Brothers have earned him the highest honor a Council can grant, Knight of the Year. Installation of Officers and Anniversary Dinner We will hold our installation of assembly officers on Saturday September 21, 2013 at Corpus Christi Church. After the 4:30 PM Mass we will have the installation ceremony in the Chapel. Our District Master Bob Holsinger and District Marshal Tony Otero will conduct the ceremony. After the ceremony we will gather in the parish hall for social time and a delicious dinner catered by Andrew s Catering Co. The buffet style dinner will include Chef s Selection Fresh Green Salad Baby Greens, Fresh Vegetables, Feta, Cranberries Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette Rolls & Butter Oven Roasted Vegetable Medley Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Baby Carrots, Red Onion, Mushrooms Roasted Garlic & Parmesan Mashed Potatoes Choice of Entrée: Grilled Beef Medallions Mushroom Merlot Demi-Glace Sedona Chicken Floured & Seared Breast of Chicken Served with a Marsalla Wine Sauce Highlighted with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Artichoke Hearts and Fresh Basil Honey Mustard Salmon Salmon Fillets Roasted with Honey and Whole Grain Mustard Glaze Garnished Fresh Chopped Parsley and Citrus Aioli Something Sweet Chef s Selection of Petit Cut Dainties 4
5 Veterans Benefit Dinner We will host the annual Veterans Benefit Dinner on November 10. S. K. Dave Davis has once again volunteered to chair this event. It is not too early to begin planning for this. Please get in touch with Dave or John Myers if you can help. Let s make this event an even greater success than last year. Dave has arranged to have Dave Sitton as our guest speaker for the dinner. Biographical Sketch for Dave Sitton For over a quarter of a century, Arizona sports fans have been familiar with Dave Sitton. Since 1980 he has broadcast on radio or television University of Arizona Football, basketball and baseball. He is also the world voice for USA rugby as seen on ESPN, ABC, FOX Sports Net and Sky Television. He also produces, hosts and syndicates a weekly three hour radio talk show dedicated to young men and the military. The backto-back programs are called American Warrior and Daily Male.
