I look back at all that you have done to keep this Parish and Community whole with pride and praise. It is you who make this Council recognized and successful. I have many short comings but it is you who step up and complete me. Thank you again for your trust. Vivat Jesus Memorial Day is not only a big Sale Day each year. On May 31st we give thanks for the many Americans that gave their lives to insure the safety of our families and country. Some of us remember WW II and Korea. All of us remember Viet Nam. Now our attention is on Iraq and Afghanistan. New worries in Korea. The youth of our nation are still giving their blood and lives for our country. Let s remember them not only on May 31st but every day. God Bless and Keep them. 2 Awards Birthdays in June Knight of the Month Tony Cale Tony is being recognized for his dedication to what being a Knight is about. Tony is a tireless worker when it comes to Council and Church Events. Tony is active with the Council and District Free Throw contests each year as well as his work with Breakfasts, Dinners and Easter Fiesta. Tony can be found setting up and cleaning up with his fellow brothers even when his health is questionable. Tony this Council is Blessed with you and we thank you for your service. Joe and Anna are willing to help with many of our events and functions. We are especially thankful for their service with the Lenten Fish Fry and Church events. Every year since I became a Knight, I have witnessed Joe and Anna step up to assist or host our activities. Readers Review by Dave Conca The Gospels in Brief by Leo Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy, best known for War and Peace, followed an interesting path to Christianity. He was born in 1828, near Moscow. By the age of 33, he had squandered most of his inheritance through gambling and partying. He also served as an officer in the army, viewing the horrors of war. These experiences led him to Christianity. Tolstoy rearranges the Gospel to tell a story about the teachings of Jesus. He pulls together different parts of each Gospel that have a common theme and arranges them into short chapters. For example, chapter three is The Kingdom of God. Christ s Testimony Concerning John. He brings together readings from Matthew, Luke and John, that relate to this topic, directly quoting the Bible. He follows this up with his own commentary and opinion on what we should derive from this lesson. I found it very interesting, especially coming from a legendary author, growing up in Russia, a country not necessarily known for embracing Christianity. Tolstoy sums this writing up beautifully in his Afterword. The understanding of life, is the doing of good. A credo to live by! Page 2

3 Officer Duties - Part 1 (Part 2 to follow in the July Newsletter) GRAND KNIGHT (Nominee - Brian Landry) The grand knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings, acts as ex-officio member at all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a ly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of council s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. For more specific duties and responsibilities refer to the Grand Knights Handbook (#915). DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT (Nominee - Frank Saavedra) The deputy grand knight is second in command. He assists the grand knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the grand knight. Should the grand knight be absent from a council meeting, the deputy grand knight will preside. He is chairman of the council s retention committee and also a member of the Advisory Board charged with overseeing the council sponsored Columbian Squires circle. CHAPLAIN The chaplain is the spiritual advisor of the council. He is expected to make a report at council meetings on religious matters. The grand knight appoints a priest in accordance with any rules established by the bishop of the diocese to serve as council chaplain. For more specific duties, responsibilities, refer to the Chaplains Handbook (#945) CHANCELLOR (Nominee - George Pollock) The chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and the deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members interest in council activities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee and a member of the Columbian Squire circle ceremonial team. RECORDER (Nominee - Dean Dickherber) The recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and it s correspondence. A Record s Minutes Book (#1043) is available from the Knights of Columbus Supply Department for keeping record of council meetings. Other officer duties will be in the next newsletter. 4 Organ Donor Sunday Results (April 18th) Blood Drive Results (May 2nd) Our goal was 30 pints from the Red Cross and we collected 35 pints plus 2 double reds which brings our total to 39. Our Organ Donor Sunday had 14 parishoners signed up to be organ donors with many more who took the literature to consider the programs we had information that explained the various option available. A Prayer for Healing... Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands. We place our sick in Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servants to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that whatever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen. 5 April 2010, Issue 21 This Month June Next Month JuLY June 5 - Religious Appreciation Dinner Our Annual Religious Appreciation Buffet Dinner will be in the Tanque Verde Room. Tickets are $12 per person and the buffet will be catered by the Eeclectic Cafe. Seating is limited so get your tickets early on sale in the Parish Office. June 9 - Election of Officer s. This is a very important Business Meeting and it is hoped that every member will attend. The election process is outlined by Supreme and State. The Trustees will present the slate of officers for the second time. If there is more than one person running for the same office there is a run off written ballot. You should take this election very seriously. Those elected will represent the St. Pius X Knights. The future of our Council is in your hands. June 20 - Fathers Day The greatest thing a FATHER can do to his children, is to love their mother. Happy Fathers Day! June 24 - No Meeting There will be no meeting (Social Meeting) on June 24th. Our Social Meeting is being replaced by a Night at the Ballpark on Friday, June 25th. June 25 - Night at the Ballpark As noted on June 24 our social meeting has been replaced with an opportunity to attend the ball game at Hi Corbett Field in Randolph Park. The game starts at 7 PM and tickets are $6.50, normally $8 and if you attended last year you will know what section we are in because it is the same section. Celebrate this year by thanking a service member for his sacrifice in keeping our country safe. It only takes a moment, but the memory of your gesture will last a life time. July 17 - Benedictine Monastery Clean up Duty 7 A.M A.M. Clean up of South Lot. Volunteers need to meet at St. Pius X parking lot at 6:30 A.M. Bring work gloves, rakes, clippers and shovels. July 22 thru 27 - Religious Conference Our Religious Sisters are having a conference and will require help shuttling members of their order from Tucson Airport to Redemptionish Conference Center.
