Stelton, Oak Tree, Pscatawaytown and Clara Barton schools are scheduled to be closed n the Board of Educaton s proposed reorganzaton plan. FUSS members and other resdents objected to the proposed closng of Stelton School, and to the board s plan for busng students to other schools at Monday nght s Board of Educaton meetng at J.P. Stevens Hgh School. John Tuer of Edson Woods West objected to the board's plan to bus students across Route 27. "To put chldren n an unnecessarly hazardous condton s knd of slly, Tuer sad. Superntendent Charles A. 25C Boyle ponted out that many Edson chldren are bused each day on Route 27 and other "hazardous" roads. But Tuer sad he was concerned about the heavy trucks that use Route 27. He sad an ndependent survey showed a "vast number" of sx-wheel or larger trucks usng that road durng school hours. Boyle sad an alternatve route s possble va Brdge Street and promsed to dscuss that further wth Edson Woods resdents. The board wll spend $175,- 000 to bus students to ther new schools. In response to a queston about whether the routes would be permanent, Board Presdent Rchard Hnes ponted out that the board has dropped only one bus route, and that was a temporary route that was needed when the N.J. Turnpke was under constructon. (please turn to page 12) 'Holey' sewers provng costly METUCHEN If Counclman Tom Walsh s fgures aren t full of holes then the borough s santary sewer system s. Walsh estmated Monday nght that 40 percent of the sewage for whch the borough s payng for treatment by the Mddlesex County Utltes Authorty (MCUA) s ground water. Ths year the borough approprated $217,677 for ts payments to the MCUA. Based on Walsh s nfltraton calculatons, then a largechunk of ths money s payng for the treatment of plan water that s fndng ts way nto the sewerage system through chnks n the agng lnes. Walsh s nfltraton estmate emerged durng hs presentaton of a new schedule of separate sewer user fees that the borough must mpose begnnng February 1. The separate fees for use of local santary sewer lnes wll be mposed on approxmately 25 tax exempt and 15 ndustral and commercal propertes n the borough. The mposton of the separate fees has been mandated for all muncpal members of the MCUA f the authorty s to receve between $25 mllon and $30mllon from the federal Envronmental Protecton Agency for the mprovement and expanson of ts facltes. In the case of Metuchen and (please turn to page 12) PD promoton dspute resolved n Metuchen METUCHEN The protracted dspute over promoton procedures for the Metuchen Polce Department has been resolved. Openngs for one leutenant of operatons and fve staff sergeants were posted ths week and t s expected that some of the postons wll be flled by the end of October. The promotons also nclude the post of detectve sergeant, whch automatcally wll be flled by Detectve Patrolman Ralph Salamone. Salamone s automatc promoton s based on hs length of servce and hs performance n the two-man detectve bureau and the fact that he has been recevng a detectve sergeant s pay. Formal announcement of the new testng procedures was made Monday nght by Mayor John Wley Jr., who noted that there s "agreement" on the part of "both the mayor and councl and the members of the Polce Department." The borough has been attemptng for almost two years to reorganze the department but the testng procedures proposed met wth opposton by Local 60, Polcemen's Benevolent Assocaton. On two occasons, PBA members boycotted scheduled examnatons. The PBA then fled a grevance wth the Publc Employees Relatons Commsson (PERC) but n July, a state arbtrator ruled that the borough had the rght to reorganze the department and to establsh the procedures for promotons. However, talks between the governng body and the PBA contnued and the procedures announced Monday nght were the result. The procedures do reflect what was a major concern of the PBA and that s what t clamed was a lack of weght gven to senorty. Orgnally, testng for the new posts of staff sergeant was open on an equal bass to both patrolmen and exstng sergeants. Under the new procedures, the wrtten test for staff sergeant wll be admnstered frst to exstng sergeants, who must acheve a total of 210 ponts n all testng categores to wn promoton. Patrolmen wth fve years of servce then wll be elgble to compete for any of the staff sergeanctes not flled by any of the exstng sergeants. The new procedure also provdes that any sergeant scorng under 210 ponts wll have promoton prorty over patrolmen also scorng under 210 f that sergeant s score s one of the top fve on a combned lst of patrolmen and sergeants. Promoton to leutenant of operatons s open to those wth the rank of sergeant and above wth 10 years of servce. The only two members of the department wth ranks above sergeant are Chef Joseph Perrno and Leutenant James Kover, who s n charge of the (please turn to page 12)

Kachuba, 23, of Perth Amboy, told Patrolman Charles L. Moore a story you wouldn t beleve'1early Sunday mornng. Moore ddn't and Kachuba was arrested n connecton wth the theft of wheels, rms and hubcaps valued n excess of $1,300 from the June Chevrolet lot on Mddlesex Avenue. Accordng to Moore, he frst spotted Kachuba sttng n a car n the Knox Tavern parkng lot shortly after mdnght. He sad when he returned to the scene a short tme before the tavern closed, he observed the same car parked n a dfferent part of the tavern lot. When he turned hs headlghts on the car, Moore sad, he spotted several large objects on the rear seat. He sad they turned out to be the tres, rms and hubcaps whch later were determned to have been stolen from the nearby June Chevrolet premses. Accordng to Moore, when he questoned Kachuba about the equpment, the suspect sad the way they found ther way nto hs car was a story not to be beleved. Kachuba s story, accordng to Moore, was that he had been approached by a stranger who told hm he looked cool and asked f he was nterested n makng some money. Snce he had been out of work, he was, Kachuba told Moore, so the stranger threw the tres nto the back seat of hs car. Kachuba has been charged wth recevng stolen property. 3 Councl to study offce on agng EDISON A subcommttee of the Townshp Councl wll be apponted Monday to look nto the establshment of an offce on agng for the townshp. The proposal for such an offce was made at last week's councl meetng by Lee Santangelo, the townshp's senor ctzens coordnator. "Stand by the senors," she urged the mayor and councl, "and put through an Offce on Agng wthout too much delberaton. Councl Presdent Angelo Orlando sad the councl has supported senors actvtes n the past and wll n the future, but declned toact mmedately. It wll take some tme, study and effort, he sad. "If t affects the muncpal code, we must enact ordnances." Orlando sad the subcommttee wll be announced at Monday nght s councl agenda sesson. Ms. Santangelo sad there are 6,000 senor ctzens n Edson, and "99 percent of them are n accord about the offce on agng. She presented a petton wth 800 sgnatures of senors who back her dea. The offce would, accordng to Ms. Santangelo, act on all government grant opportuntes; provde an outreach program for handcapped senors; help senors fll out forms for subsdzed housng and other benefts, and provde an expanded nutrton program. It s somethng about whch we all should be concerned. As Mr. Greco put t at last week's Edson Townshp Councl meetng, "Do they expect someone 70 or 80 years old to jump from that heght?" We hope not. Nobody should be asked to leap from such a heght n an emergency. The regulaton should be modfed. Drveway last block to medcal buldng METUCHEN Attorney James Gbbons assured the Board of Adjustment last Wednesday nght that hs clents are agreeable to relocatng the Route 27 drveway nto the proposed Levnson professonal buldng provded t meets wth the approval of the state Department of Transportaton. In return, the board assured Gbbons that t wll approve the drveway as presently shown on the ste plan f ts traffc consultant determnes that t provdes a suffcent sght lne for eastbound motorsts on Route 27. But f the traffc consultant, Marshall Frost of Chatham, fnds that the sght lne s nsuffcent then he and Gbbons wll go to Trenton n an effort to convnce the state DOT that permsson should be gven to move the drveway 15 feet further west. The locaton of the drveway s the fnal obstacle to the board s approval of a varance and ste plan for a porton of the parkng lot of the fve-story medcal and professonal buldng, whch wll be stuated just over the muncpal boundary lne n Edson. Applcaton for the parkng lot approval frst was made to the Board of Adjustment four years ago. Because the board dd not lke the dea of traffc makng left turns n and out of the lot by way of Route 27, the applcaton was dened. The rejecton became the subject of an appeal n the Appellate Dvson of Superor Court, whch remanded the case to the local board. The controversy seemngly was settled n June when the applcants, who operate a Perth Amboy law frm, negotated wth John F. Kennedy Medcal Center for a rght-of-way through hosptal property that would provde a means of ngress and egress to the medcal buldng byway of James Street and not just Route 27. At ts August meetng, the board was scheduled to gve fnal ste plan approval to the project but the queston of the Route 27 drveway was rased. It was the board s contenton that t would be safer If the drveway were moved about 15 feet further to the west and ths was the fnal wrangle that occuped last week s meetng. The case s scheduled to be settled once and for all at the October meetng. Corkng good dea METUCHEN Champagne would be approprate, suggested attorney James T. Gbbons as last Wednesday nght's meetng of the Board of Adjustment was called to order. Gbbons ponted out that t was the fourth annversary of the date on whch he fled the orgnal applcaton for the parkng lot varance for the fve-story Levnson professonal buldng to be constructed across the lne n Edson. And what case was Gbbons on hand for last Wednesday? The Levnson case, whch stll s unresolved. It s antcpated, however, that the matter wll be wrapped up at the board s October meetng and that constructon of the buldng wll start ths sprng. Councl approves fve ordnances EDISON The Townshp Councl held publc hearngs on fve ordnances last Wednesday nght, and aftervery lttle publc partcpaton, passed all the new statutes. A $125,000 bondng ordnance to fnance part of the cost of parkng lot mprovements at the Edson Tran Staton on Planfeld Avenue wll provde 200 parkng spaces at the staton. The townshp wll be rembursed for the full amount by N.J. Transt. The ste now accommodates about 100 cars, forcng many commuters to park on local streets, whch leaves resdents wth no place to park. Included under the bondng ordnance wll be gradng, pavng, landscapng, lghtng and curbs. Constructon wll begn when N.J. Transt approves fnal plans. The councl approprated $100,000 for the reconstructon and restoraton of three fre vehcles, two 1972 pumpers and a 1973 pumper. In another ordnance dealng METUCHEN A $41,880 contract for varous energy savngs mprovements to borough buldngs hnges on new overhead doors for the frehouse. Durng Monday nght s agenda meetng, Mayor John Wley Jr. and members of the Borough Councl took tme out to stroll over to the frehouse. When they returned, they appeared agreed on two thngs: The exstng doors are n bad shape. They wll not be replaced by the "Cadllac of overhead doors costng $20,000 as recommended by a consultng engneer. Ths leaves the choce of gong along wth doors costng $12,700, as provded n the base contract offered by Alled Condtonng of Edson, or settlng for the same knd of wooden doors that now enclose the frehouse bays. In preparaton for Monday nght s regular meetng and further consderaton of the energy savng mprovements, wth the Fre Department, the councl establshed a chef fre nspector. It was explaned that Joseph Szebeny was already performng that job, and that the ordnance was desgned to gve hm the ttle. Resdent Wllam Greco, a tenant at Redfeld Vllage, asked f the functons of the nspector would nclude nspecton of apartment dwellngs. Councl Presdent Angelo Orlando sad Szebeny has been performng that chore. Greco sad t was mportant because New Jersey law provdes that second floor apartments up to 16 feet off the ground requre no emergency exts. It s a fre hazard, declared Greco, who has been speakng out aganst that regulaton for years. Do they expect a 70 or 80-year-old tenant to jump from that heght? asked Greco. Other ordnances passed ncluded one to desgnate bus stops at Route 27, near Muncpal Boulevard, and one whch vacated a rght of way on land purchased from the townshp. May close door on mprovements Borough Admnstrator Davd Kochel was nstructed to determne the cost of new wooden doors. He also was asked to fnd out the heght of new model fre trucks. That because f the borough buys one, t doesn t want a frehouse wth $12,700 doors that aren t hgh enough to accommodate the truck. If the councl decdes to go along wth wooden doors, t wll have to throw out the bds t receved at ts September 8 meetng and start all over agan. The reason s that the bd specfcatons dd not provde for wooden doors for the frehouse. Alled Condtonng was the lowest of four bdders on the mprovements to the frehouse as well as to Borough Hall, the lbrary and Department of Publc Works garage. The bds ranged to a hgh of $61,000 as compared to the orgnal estmate of $31,000 by the consultng engneers, Brownworth, Mosher & Doran of Pscataway.

5 the Revew September 17, 1981 page 5 Edson ponders legal moves to prohbt heavy truckng EDISON The townshp may be gong to court n an effort to force the state Department of Transportaton to nsttute 24-hour truckng banson Planfeld Avenue and Vneyard Road. Local offcals are watng for legal opnons on suggestons that the townshp obtan a court order barrng heavy trucks from those two roads, and that the townshp ntate a lawsut aganst the state DOT to obtan a full truck ban. The state has ordered that trucks over 10 tons be prohbted from usng Planfeld Avenue, from Woodbrdge Avenue to Klmer Road, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., except for delveres. But Ed Collesano, presdent of the Planfeld Avenue Truck Ban Commttee, last week asked the Townshp Councl to close that road, than fght the DOT." He urged Mayor Anthony M. Yelencscs to get a court order closng the road to heavy trucks. "Grab the bull by the horns, he sad, "because the nose s a health hazard." Yelencscs sad Tuesday he was stll watng fora legal opnon from Peter DeSarno, townshp attorney, about such an order. "I m not gong to stand out n front of the trucks, sad the mayor, "but I wll keep workng to see f we can get a 24- hour ban. Councl Presdent Angelo Orlando sad he s recommended to the townshp legal department that the truckng bans should be attacked from "a health standpont. Orlando noted that there are smlar problems on Route 27 and Vneyard Road. He sad DeSarno would render an opnon on the lawsut suggeston wthn two weeks. You may have to suffer for another year, Orlando sad, "but we re hopng for a good end result, and we won'tgveup the fght." Stevens Hgh has had wnnng records for the past two football seasons, but the Hawks' nablty to score ponts n the shadow of ther opponents' goalposts was a costly shortcomng. But Coach Joe Gutowsk feels that thngs just mght be dfferent ths season. "We ll be a lot more physcal up front, Gutowsk sad ths week as he prepared to put hs 70 players through the fnal two weeks of practce. There s fnally some sze up front, observed the veteran coach. Durng recent scrmmages, the Hawks were able to "punch n for scores from 10or 12 yards out, Gutowsk noted wth a smle. That front lne s comprsed of tght end Scott Johnson, a 6-1, 200-pound senor; rght tackle Jerome Foster, at 6-5, 237 pounds; left tackle Bob Muha, 6-2 and 215; left guard Gary Lanzafama, 6-2, 256; rght guard Brendan Fnn, 6-1, 210, and center Bob Stramara, a 5-10, 185-pound senor. Junor Mke Adler s also expected to play some at center, whle senor Glen Meszkalsk, out for a couple of weeks wth an njury, and Bob Pcaron, a junor, wll get n some tme at guard postons. Splt end Bob Sorrell has suffered a broken thumb and probably won t play for three weeks. Rcky Rodrguez, a defensve player, s No. 2 man at that poston. That lne wll be clearng the way for runners lke fullback Bob Pcaron, a hard-runnng 5-9, 180-pounder; junor Mke Kozlowsk, a 5-6, 190-pounder who turned n some good runs last season, and talback Marc Mofsowtz, a speedy nsde and outsde runner who has ganed 15 pounds to wegh n at 160. Junor Jm Schedeneck, a 5-10, 170-pound lefty, wll be at quarterback. Schedeneck cracked a collarbone last year and suffered an elbow njury ths past sprng, but Gutowsk says he s recovered. Defensvely, Gutowsk s countng on Fnn and junor Paul Donne as defensve ends, wth junor Mke Watts as the swng man. The veteran Lanzafama and transfer Joe Koedros, a 6-2, 220-pounder wll man the tackle spots. Koedros, a junor, played at Marlboro Hgh as a sophomore. Joe Seeman, descrbed as an exceptonal player by Gutowsk, wll be back at the mddle guard poston. He'll be backed up by junor Mke Stelman. The lnebackers wll be Muha and Ken Natal, a 175-pounder who played n the defensve secondary last season. Ths year s defensve secondary wll be Scott Johnson at strong corner; Tony Pascull at strong safety; Rodrguez at free safety, and Bll Wckham at weak corner. Stevens lost placekcker Ryan Varga to graduaton, but Gutowsk feels that job s n good feet wth Johnson, who wll also do the puntng. Schedeneck can also perform both kckng chores. Many of those players are young, but they also have experence, whch should be a plus. "We had to play young players the last couple of years, sad Gutowsk. In addton to the offensve lne, Gutowsk s very pleased wth the atttude of the players. There are no stars on ths team, he sad, "and they all realze that. It s a very closely knt group. Another closely knt group s the coachng staff. Tony Smonell, along wth Gutowsk, s n hs 18th year. He ll agan coach the lnemen. John DMuzo, n hs 13th year, wll coach the recevers and secondary. Nck Romanetz, n hs 11th season, wll coach defensve ends and centers, whle Rch Krychowecky, a 10-year man, wll coach the backs and lnebackers. Romanetz and Krychowecky wll also coach the junor varsty and sophomore teams. Gutowsk sees the Mddlesex County Athletc Conference race as another good one. It should be a good, balanced conference, but t was last year, too," he sad. Stevens wll open the season September 25 at Cedar Rdge n an 8 p.m. contest. Gutowsk, not usually one to offer predctons about hs team, gave ths characterstc evaluaton: I m cautously optmstc." New Coach Mke Clento promses a completely dfferent" offensve look when the Bulldogs open at Mddlesex on September 26. "We ll have people n moton, spread formatons, and well take plenty of gambles, "Clento sad Tuesday. It wll be exctng football to watch. Clento s multple offense wll be run from a varety of formatons, but he expects to mx passng and runnng equally. I lke a wde open offense, explans the new coach, not three yards and a cloud of dust. And he feels that quarterback Paul Bruder, a junor up from the junor varsty, s just the one to run that offense. By the tme he s through at Metuchen, he ll be well-known around the county and the state, predcts Clento. Bruder, at 5-11 and 170 pounds, can throw the ball both long and accurately, Clento sad. Behnd hm n the backfeld wll be George Relly, a 5-10, 165-pound junor whose speed wll gve the Bulldogs an outsde threat from one of the halfback slots. The other halfback wll be ether Steve Hecht or Tm Brown, both ofwhomarepower runners wth speed. The fullback slot wll probably be splt between Jerry Drew, a 6-1, 185 senor, and Bob Knoll, a 5-11, 190 pound junor. A strong offensve lne wll be led by Steve Zolner at rght guard. He s our bg leader there, says Clento, "he s a hell of an athlete." At left guard wll be Pete Lally, a 5-10,175 senor. Mke Mullen, a 5-11, 235- pound junor, s another player that Clento feels wll make hs mark by the tme he leaves MHS. He has good sze and a lot of ablty, sad the coach. He can move and has a very mportant job at center that s where everythng starts." The offensve tackles wll be John Schumann, a 6-0, 210 senor, and Ted Grabowsk,a5-10, 220 junor. "Both of them have done an excellent job n scrmmages, sad Clento. The new coach s also hgh on Blly German, a 5-8,150-pound senor at splt end, and Paul Hall, a 6-2, 190 pound junor who wll play tght end. "German has a lot of speed and we expect lots of bg plays from hm," sad Clento. He termed Hall a good blocker" who can also be expected to catch lots of passes. It s Kckoff Tme for Metuchen Hgh and... BUCKY BULLDOG Jeff Merrtts, a 5-11, 155- pound junor, s Bruder s backup, and may be used n specal stuatons," Clento sad. Bran Wood, a 6-1, 170- pound junor, has the unque ablty to play at both splt end or tght end, Clento says. As long as our offensve lne stays healthy, sad Clento, we ll be OK. We do lack depth there. Many of the offensve players wll be gong both ways. Zolner wll play defensve tackle, whle Lally s expected to play noseguard n the Bulldogs 52 defense. Mullen s also a noseguard, but wll play tackle when Lally s n the game. Grabowsk wll also do double duty at tackle. The defensve ends wll be Hall and Alan Roth, a 6-3, 165- pound junor, descrbed by Clento as a player who wll really help us." The lnebackers are Knoll, termed by Clento the best lnebacker we have rght now" and Pat Lepre, a 5-8,148-pound junor. Lepre s a tough ndvdual who has really come along, sad the coach. Relly and German, along wth John Muho and Hecht, wll make up the secondary. Muho s a 5-8, 160-pound senor. And at safety, Clento has one of the best htters n the state n Hecht, a 5-9, 160- pound senor. Clento compares hm to Scott Jensen (now at Rutgers), who was a superb defensve player at Kennedy Hgh. I put Hecht n that category, stated Clento. "I m very optmstc about the upcomng season," says Clento, and t s obvous he feels the Bulldogs can mprove on last year s 1-8 record. But wnnng sn t everythng, n Clento s mnd. He feels football players should get more out of the game. They should learn that f they work hard enough for somethng, that they wll eventually get t. They should also set a goal and go after t. "Learnng how to work wth other people on a football feld wll help them later n lfe," he sad. The new coach also has a couple of new assstant coaches, Rch Sandholt, who wll handle the runnng backs and defensve lnemen, and Larry Mokar, who wll coach tght ends, defensve ends and offensve tackles. Ned Enns wll handle the defense, lnebackers and offensve lne, whle Clento oversees the entre offense. I want the football players to be recognzed as somethng specal," he says. And a players' atttude durng practce sessons s also very mportant to Wojck. What you do n practce, you do n a game, he says. If you don't work on fundamentals n practce, you won t do t rght n a game, ether. Edson coaches have been drllng the players hard n fundamental blockng and tacklng snce September 1, but many of the athletes started workng toward ths season shortly after endng a 3-6 campagn last Thanksgvng Day. An off-season weght-lftng program has added some muscle to the Eagles. The strength has been very vsble n scrmmage sessons, observed Wojck. The offense has looked good n spots durng recent scrmmages, accordng to the coach. Experence from that 3-6 season wllalsohelptheeagles, who have 22 returnng lettermen. Edson won three of ts last fve games last year. The Eagles wll mss players lke fullback Joe Lynch, who carred the ball on 85 percent of hs team s runnng plays and ganed 890 yards, and standout center Bll Sehl. Lynch s talback spot wll be flled by senor Dave Valeran, who played quarterback last year. John Redman, a junor, and Phl Gassaro, a senor, are also expected to see acton there. Carmne LaManna, who started the last fve games when Scott Dckerson was hurt last season, s expected to start at fullback. Joe Sehen, a senor, wll also run from that spot. At quarterback, Henry Santos, a 6-1 senor who ran the team on a few occasons last year, appears to have that spot naled down. Junor Daro Perla, who played the last four games of the 1980 season, wll utlze hs 4.6 speed at slotback. The splt end s speedster Ken Bogdan, a hurdler on the track team. Dave Bussere wll lne up at the tght end poston. Takng Sehl s place at center wll be senor Bobby Payne. "We were very pleased wth hm n scrmmages," sad Wojck. At the tackles wll be veteran Jeff Carney, a 6-2, 235-pound senor, and Ken Percy, a 6-2, 210-pounder. The guards wll be Dan Farrar, at 5-11 and 195 pounds, andbernebragen,a6-1, 189-pound junor. Bragen s the player Wojck ponts to when he talks about the offseason weght program. He was 150 pounds at the end of last season, but now he s 189 and he has the frame to put on 30 more pounds, sad the coach. Defensvely, Edson wll use a 52 Monster" algnment, wth sophomore John Scarllo, a 5-11, 185-pounder, as the noseman. He's very tough and has a good atttude," sad Wojck happly. Senor lettermen Tony Warren and Ken Dost wll be the defensve tackles. Warren weghs n at 244 pounds and stands 6-2, whle Drost, who has also beneftted from the weght program, carres 210 pounds on a 6-1 frame. Bussere, at 6-0,175, wll play both ways, teamng wth Rch Strachan (5-10, 180) at defensve end. The lnebackng stuaton s up n the ar," Wojck says, but feels that Sehen, LaManna, Mke Messneo (5-11, 190) and Mke Kennedy (5-11, 170) are the top canddates. The monster n the secondary s also a queston mark at ths pont, but Redman and Jerry Dalton are the man contenders. The monster lnes up on the strong sde of a formaton and usually s responsble for contanment. It s almost lke a lnebacker," says Wojck. Defensve halfbacks wll be Andy Bythell, Danny Phllps and Valeran. Santos, another two-way performer, wll play safety. The kckng game wll be handled by placekcker Greg Yock and ether Perla or Valeran wll do the puntng. Others expected to see acton are Ame Santago, a backup for Bogdan who may also return kckoffs and punts, and Rch Ftzgerald, who could play at defensve end. Wojck readly admts that he made "a lot of mstakes" n hs frst year at the helm, but feels he s much better organzed now. "Our practces are more organzed, and the other coaches are also back for a second year, so we know the personnel better, he sad. "Also, the kds know me better, and we have some good leadershp from the senors." Wojck s assstant coaches are Ken Stout, quarterbacks and defensve backs; Bob Zerngo, offensve ends and defensve backs; Dave Ungerer, backs and lnebackers, and Tm Peterson, offensve and defensve ends. N.J Edson school reorganzaton plan crtczed (contnued from page 1) One resdent suggested that the John Marshall School on Cornell Street be closed, nstead of Stelton School, but Joseph Kreskey, assstant superntendent, sad such a move would stll result n movng Stelton students to other schools. The future use of Stelton and Oak Tree schools, scheduled to close n June of 1932, also prompted questons. Stelton area resdents reported hearng ''rumors" that the Klmer Job Corps would be transferred to the buldng, but Hnes sad that would not happen. The federal government has more room than t needs at Klmer, sad Hnes, "and the program s beng cut back, so why would they move?" He sad the townshp Recreaton Department has expressed an nterest n wrtng to use Stelton School for a communty and senor ctzens center. That prompted a concern from resdents that the communty center would become a teen-age hangout." Hnes sad all actvtes would be supervsed. Another resdent sad he contacted 100 senor ctzens and found that none of them wanted to use Stelton. A predcted boom" n school populaton by one resdent would not affect Edson, Hnes sad. He ponted out that housng unts here are too expensve ($90,000 to $100,000), and that New Jersey s populaton s gettng older as young famles move to the "Sunbelt." We re losng about 500 students a year," sad Hnes, "and f that contnues we could close four more schools n 1987." A fnal vote on the plan won t come untl December, Hnes sad. Edson students to be transported as schools close EDISON The Board of Educaton ths week announced transportaton plans for students who wll be transferred to other schools when Stelton, Oak Tree, Pscatawaytown and Clara Barton schools are closed under a proposed reorganzaton plan. Approxmately 200 students of the 268 to be transferred from Oak Tree School wll be transported to James Madson, Menlo Park, Woodbrook and Martn Luther Kng schools. Lack of sdewalks, hazardous routes (for walkng) and a dangerous ralroad crossng mandated the busng. The board wll also provde transportaton for 175 students beng transferred from Stelton School to Washngton School. No students wll be permtted to walk across Route 27. Oak Tree and Stelton are scheduled to be closed on June 30, Pscatawaytown and Clara Barton schools are slated to close on June 30, Pscatawaytown students reassgned to Lndeneau School wll not be permtted to walk across Route 1 or to walk to school by way of the Woodbrdge Avenue/Route 1 overpass. Students reassgned from Clara Barton to James Monroe School wll be bused becauseof the hazardous route. Transportaton wll be provded for students lvng west of Route 1 and south of Amboy Avenue.
