I would lke to offer a few words of encouragement I dd not know a great deal about George Fox college before our son enrolled there but for about two years pror to ths enrollment, we receved "The Crescent." It was from readng t and from the. pcture gven there of the college that I began to feel t would be a good college to attend. I beleve "The Crescent" had much to do wth nfluencng at least ths one student to come, to GFC. I would lke to encourage you, your staff and the students n general to see that all phases of the lfe of the college are fofered h tle papev and that prospectve fefudents receved at least some of the ssues. AN INTERESTED PARENT How Come Homecomng Explaned It's Homecomng tme agan. As the "crmnal returns to the scene of hs crme", so, nevtably must the graduate return lo hs Alma Mater. We welcome you "hote" alumn! The purpose of ths artcle s to assst you throughout the day. We suggest you clp t out and carry t wth you n case a queston may arse. Now, breakfast over, let us begn our campus tour. We're off for a tour of the campus dwellngs. If you are a "calore watcher" ths s the place f o r you: You wll see lots of them on ths stroll, There are two reasons for ths nspecton parade. One; t nsures the rooms of at least one good fall cleanng, and two; t s. a means of encouragng the alumn to help us obtan new dorms. Don't forget to g e t your candy and sgn your name. Our next bg event s the coronaton of the queen. Hark! the trumpet sounds and the queen enters wth her court, lke a double row of ducks on parade. After a great deal of "hedgng" she s offcally crowned and we fall n lne for the hgh classed talent show to follow. After lunch we make our way to the football feld for a dsplay of strength a n d.brawn. The object of ths game s to see who can run the fasttest. A ball s kcked as the startng sgnal. Those who are slower than the others try to "htch a rde" on a faster runner. The ball s called a "pgskn" and the feld a "grdron", probably because t h e players must "wallow" n the mud wth the ball, and one eam usually gets "szzled". The queen and court almost don't make t to the exhbton and have to drve n at the last mnute. After dnner we retreat to Wood-Mar hall to see the students perform. These partcpants are each gven lnes to memorze n advance, and at ths tme they have an oppor- tunty to show all the vstors how well they've learned ther peces. Oscars are presented for the best rectatons. Wth ths program our Homecomng festvtes come to a close. We sncerely hope we have been able to help you throughout the day. Thank-you for helpng to make ths Homecomng successful and we'll see you when you come "home" agan next year. Through Flamng Sword was gathered and orgnally used by Dr. Roberts n hs B.D. thess, "The Concept of Perfecton n t h e Hstory of the Quaker Movement," and n hs Ph.D. thess, "George Fox's Concept of the Church." Professor Roberts stated that ths book was wrtten to provde a popular account of the lfe of George Fox and to show that the early Quaker movement can best be understood through ts teachng on holness and the nature of the church. Through Flamng Sward was publshed, n. Portland by the Barclay Press. Professor Roberts' Ph.D. thess "George Fox's Concept of the Church" has been mcroflmed and s n Quaker collectons around the world. Ths thess was also revewed n the Graduate School Record of Boston Unversty where he receved hs Ph.D. n Among other thngs wrtten by Dr. Roberts s a pamphlet, "The People Called Quakers." He contrbutes artcles from tme to tme to several magaznes, and s edtor of Concern, a magazne put out by evangelcal Frends. He also wrote the scrpt for the stewardshp flm, "Meet the Hess Famly" and has wrtten a devotonal book. Intensfed Studes Contnues Approved to enter the Intensfed Studes Program at George Fox college ths fall are Howard Morse and Floyd Chamberlan, junors, and Florence Angelelo, a sophomore. Howard Morse s from Greenleaf, Idaho. He graduated from Greenleaf Frends Academy n Howard plans to contnue hs bologcal studes n graduate school and to establsh hs vocaton n research. Floyd chamberlan's home s Greer, Idaho. Wth an avd nterest n classcal musc, h e looks forward to a career n pano teachng. Immedate plans call for completon of hs studes at George Fox where he s an appled musc major. Florence Angelelo, the frst woman to be honored n ths progam, s a resdent of Newberg. A graduate of Bandon, Oregon hgh school, she s marred and has a ten year old son. Her captvaton enthusasm for study shows that college s not just for the "younger set." Her major s educatonal psychology wth a mnor n language arts. Upon completon of her work at. George Fox she plans to secure a Master's degree and teach n hgh school. Ths honor prgram was establshed last year to provde greater depth n undergraduate studes for specally qualfed students. Last year two sophomores entered the frst course, Gl Rnard, of Newberg, bology major, and John Johnson, Spokane, Washngton, majorng n mathematcs. These two men are now workng on ther two year projects, Rnard n the feld of hormones and Jonaon n the feld of computaton. The Intensfed Studes Program provdes for the enrchment of basc courses durng the sophomore year and for completon of a specal research project, of graduate school calber, durng the junor and senor years, for whch credt wll be assessed by the ISP commttee. Each student s enrolled for the prmary purpose of studyng. Each should guard hs study tme as carefully as he would guard hs workng tme f he were n the employee of some frm. All the study tme n the world wth the most quet peaceful surroundngs wll not brng success unless we use that tme effectvely! Try ths outlne of study procedures for one week. We dare you to plan your work n ths way and work ths plan and stll complan about not beng able to get all your work done. RECONNOITER: Surrey the materal you are gong to study n any gven subject at any tme. Look t over, check for topc sentences or summary paragraphs. Dscover the, organzatonal plan of the author. PLAN: Establsh a blueprnt for your study. Set up objectves. Ask yourelf, "What am I gong to learn from ths? How does ths relate to what we have already learned n ths course?" READ: Read actvely, whch means to concentrate and thnk about materal you are readng. You cannot just pour nformaton nto your bran. You must assmlate, or make a part of your store of knowledge, each topc and paragraph whch you read. Develop the habt of reactng n some way to everythng you read. ORGANIZE: After you have read, organze the knowledge nto meanngful thoughts for yourself. Put what you have read or learned nto statements that make sense to you. Explan to yourself and relate ths new materal to what you already know about the sub- EXAMINE: Test yourself on whether you have attaned the objectves you set for yourself at the begnnng- of your study n any gven subject area. Determne f you have learned what you set out to learn. Best wshes to each of you n ths new adventure n learnng! vser for ths group. Yell Queen Shrley Perce has< planned tonght's pep rally for the Homecomng football game. At the bonfre she wll ntroduce the football team. The program Saturday mornng has been planned by Howard Morse. It wll show the varety of student talent and deputaton groups avalable to churches. Lllan Holton wll gve specal assstance to Mrs. Mnne Moore who has put much hard w o r k n on the meals for Homecomng n the Dnng Hall. Lloyd Prutt wll help wth the breakfast. God's Blessngs Ths s our second n a seres of notes from famous preachers. It s strange how lttle use we have of the sprtual blessngs whch God gves us, but t s stranger stll how lttle use we make of God Hmself. Though He s "our own God," we apply ourselves but lttle to Hm. How seldom do we ask counsel at the hands of the Lord! How often do we go about our busness wthout seekng Hs gudance! In our troubles how constantly do we strve to bear our burdens ourselves, nstead of castng them upon the Lord that He may sustan us! Ths s not because we may not, for the Lord seems to say, "I am thne, soul; come and make use of Me as thou wlt; thou mayst come freely to my store, and the oftener the more welcome." It s our own fault f we do not make free wth the rches of our own God. Then, snce thou hast such a Frend, and He n v t e s thee, draw from Hm daly. Never want whlst thou hast a God to go to; never fear or fant whlst thou hast God to help thee; Go to thy treasure and take whatever thou needestthere s all that thou canst want. Learn the dvne skll of makng God all thngs to thee. He can_supply thee Wth all; or, better stll, He can be to thee nstead of all. Let me urge thee, then, to make use of thy God. Make use of hm n prayer; go to hm often, because He s thy God. Oh, wlt thou fal to use so great a prvlege? Fly to Hm; tell hm all they wants. Use Hm constantly by fath at all tmes. If some dark provdence has beclouded thee, use thy God as a "sun"; f some strkng enemy has beset thee, fnd n Jehovah a "sheld"; for He s a sun and a sheld to Hs people. If thou hast lost thy way n the mazes of lfe, use Hm as a "gude"; for he wll drect thee. Whatever thou art, and wherever thou art, remember God s just what thou wantest, and just where thou wantest and that He can do all thou wantest! Chas H. Spurgeon Brun Jr. Changed The student body s gong to enlarge the stuffed rejlca of Brun Jr. to three and one half feet n heght. They plan on havng t stuffed by a professonal who wll use a new lght weght materal for the stuffng and cover t wth two layers of Canvas. There s a commttee apponted to look nto the costs nvolved. I would lke to take ths opportunty to speak for the football team and the student body n thankng Mr. Wendel Scott for hs servces rendered as assstant football coach throughout the 1959 season. Mr. Scott, or as affectonately yet respectfully referred to as "Scotty" by those who know hm, has made no small sacrfce to be on our campus each weekday between 4:00 and 6:00 workng hard for the betterment of the sport he loves. "Scotty" has receved no salary or renumeraton n any form for hs excellent ad and help n feldng ths year's team. Coach Scott s a local busnessman n the lfe nsurance feld. "Scotty" a veteran of many football seasons hmself on all levels of play, knows football and has the ablty to mpart hs knowledge of the game to others. My only hope s that the student body and team may have n some way done as much for Mr. Scott as he has done for those wth whom he worked so hard throughout the season. Agan I say thanks to one who not only has been a coach but also an nspraton to so many ths year. «George Fox college has and offers ts students a fne program of dverson n the forms of clubs, deputaton teams, cultural organzatons and athletc teams. These chanels of dverson, (relaxaton) are mportant for the serous students, but must be handled or enjoyed wth moderaton. There s a tme n the lfe of every student when t becomes more proftable as far as hs scholastc lfe s concerned to put away hs books and lessons for a tme and relax, unwnd, and let off steam. I don't thnk enough emphass can be placed upon the need for our students to ptch n and enjoy these benefts offered here on the campus. Beng the sports edtor of ths paper I should be expected to apply these thoughts to athletcs.
