1 Art Beat newsletter for the Scottsdale Artists League March Speaker - Hal Stewart The Saving of Paducah Paducah, Kentucky How A Town Was Saved By Artists Paducah, KY is a town in Western Kentucky located where the Ohio River and the Tennessee River meet. Today, the town owes it salvation to a group of artists who banded together in 2000 and resurrected the downtown area known as Lower Town. Lower Town is a 20 block area registered with the National Historic Society. One of our members and sculptor, Hal Stewart, completed an Artist In Residency in Paducah in September 2017 and he is excited to share with you his experience there. Using old and new photographs, records of the floorings, and regional history he will take you on a journey through Paducah from its founding in1827 to date and show how artists saved the town. March 2018 Hal Stewart has been fortunate to have served as Artist In Residence at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, and Paducah Art Alliance. He will discuss and give pointers for securing participation in world-wide AIR programs. SAL Member Critique David Flitner will be leading our critique. All members are invited to participate with their work and suggestions. Critique begins promptly at 5:45 pm and runs to 6:45 pm prior to the General Meeting. Guests are welcome. Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are welcome for suggestions to finish them. Participants in the critique please do not bring paintings freshly wet, oils particularly, as the paint gets on our hands and clothes from handling the pieces and then paint is transferred to other works and the carpet in the critique area. If you have a frame to put the painting in for handling purposes that will be appreciated. One artwork only per member, please. Work submitted after 6:15 may not be critiqued depending on volume of work. Work submitted for Critique cannot be submitted for Artist of the Month on the same evening. 2 March SAL Art Beat 2 Letter From the President of Scottsdale Artists League Hello Artists: By this time each year many of us have come to terms with our real goals; perhaps only a more believable version of our holiday resolutions. I will continuously strive to help others, and one of the ways we all do that is through our membership and volunteer work in Scottsdale Artists League. Our board and all of our volunteers realize that our good work will help artists more if we simply do more of, and do it more effectively. So the goals for our league include growing our membership and growing the number of show opportunities we create for our members. This is how we finance everything else that we do. We are continuously searching out new show venues and ways to attract new members. We count on your support to make these efforts successful. Three things you can do to help us grow our good works.. 1. Join and support our shows as often as you can. 2. Invite one new person each month to join you at our monthly meeting as your guest to see if they would like to join. 3. Step up to volunteer in any way you can. Thank you for all of the volunteering you already are doing. I look forward to seeing you at our next general meeting.
