We w ere certainly busy up to the end of the year. We had our Christmas party, the Christmas party for the w omen at Hope Harbor Shelter at Roundtable Pizza, and Rick's Pizza fundraiser. Boy this w as a hard one. Just order and eat the pizza!!! Here is the new year and right aw ay w e had our Bingo night. I think that everyone had a great time and w ill be looking forw ard for our next Bingo night. Thank you to all of you that made these events so successful. I also w ant to thank the committees for our aw ards programs. We have the deadlines for the Women's Opportunity, Violet Richardson, Ruby, etc. aw ards and our committee chairman have met the deadlines. The best is yet to come w ith the w hen w e honor the w inners of these aw ards on March 22nd. Make sure you mark your calendar for this day. Also a BIG thank you to my co-president, Bev, for getting all of the reports to our region and federation on time. District Director, Nancy Lilly, requested additional reports for the region and Bev got them out ASAP. A strategic plan has been approved by the SI Board and clubs were encouraged to use the template to develop their own plan at the local level. The plan contains the organization s mission and values. It outlines objectives of the organization and the strategies to obtain those goals Make Believe Tea Party: President Bev has the invitations now for the Mother s Day Make Believe Tea Party Each member needs to mail 10 invitations. She ll distribute these before April. Each member needs to provide President Bev with the names of the 10 people so she can make a master list to be sure we don t duplicate. President s December 10 th Appeal: The Board recommendation is to support each Hopes & Dreams for Everyone and Project Sierra with $115 each. Awards Ceremony: All Committee chairman have submitted their recipients of Ruby Award, WOA and Violet Richardson Award. The Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 22, 2010 at the Temple Baptist Church. The event is coordinated with the SI Lodi Sunrise club. Stop Human Trafficking: Chairman Kim Williams and her committee have been meeting to make plans for the free workshop. Rollin in Ribs IV committee is beginning planning for the May 14 fundraiser. Hope Harbor Christmas Party SI Lodi Hosts Hope Harbor Ladies for a Christmas Party at Round Table Pizza Bev, Kim, Susan, Santa, Pat and Lori Captain Kim Williams and Karen West work year round to make Hope Harbor a safe environment for homeless women and children. Santa made an appearance to distribute gifts to each of the women on Dec. 16, In addition the club donated a 40 TV and a DVD/VCR player to be used at the Shelter for residents. The women were very appreciative of the gifts and donation to the shelter. Bev took photos at the lunch and composed a calendar of the participants. These were given to each of the women as a remembrance of their Christmas party. BELL RINGING SI Lodi members helped ring the bell for Salvation Army red kettle at S-Mart on Lodi Avenue on Saturday, December 4 from Barbara arranged for a friend to have her school band play part of the time. Community events 14th Annual Wine & Chocolate Weekend Spend Valentine s Day w eekend, February 12 & 13, in Lodi Wine Country sipping our aw ard-w inning, handcrafted w ines during the 14th Annual Wine & Chocolate Weekend! Salvation Army Kettle Kickoff Germaine, Susan and Lynn Lori and Brittnee The 31st Annual Lodi Spring Wine Show will be held March 25 and 26 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 p.m. each night at the Lodi Grape Festival grounds. Nine Soroptimist members attended a fund-raiser to start the holiday season for Salvation Army. The Salvation Army s Kettle Kickoff lunch was a great success. Page 2 SI Lodi Newsletter Jan 2011

3 National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness January 11 is the day that Soroptimist International calls Slavery s New Face: Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls. Soroptimists worldwide are committed to working in opposition to this abominable treatment of women and girls. Stop Human Trafficking Workshop Local women s organizations are working together to host the 2 nd Annual STOP Human Trafficking Workshop, free and open to the public. The event will take place on Saturday, March 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will be held at Temple Baptist Church. For free tickets to the event please contact Co- President of Soroptimist International, Bev Lacy at or her at silodi@soroptimist.net. Free tickets will also be available at the door. The program speaker is Kay Buck, Executive Director of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) in Los Angeles. The mission of CAST is to assist persons trafficked for the purpose of forced labor and slavery-like practices and to work toward ending all instances of such human rights violations. The workshop is intended to instill knowledge in the public, promote advocacy for victim s rights, and draw the community to action. Come and learn what you can do to help stop the violent trading in human lives. At the event, there will be two vendors selling items handcrafted by women escaping the life of sex trafficking. Also, tickets will be sold for door prizes. All proceeds will directly benefit organizations that work to stop human trafficking. This event is co-sponsored by the Women s Center of San Joaquin County, Soroptimist International of Lodi (both clubs), and the Lodi branches of the Salvation Army, Business and Professional Women s Foundation (BPW) and American Association for University Women (AAUW). SI Lodi Celebrating Success entries were submitted to SIA Headquarters by President Bev. She chose the Salvation Army Hope Harbor project under the Program category. The Stop Human Traffic Workshop was submitted in the category of Public Awareness. Past President Germaine posed with Karen West in the room that we donated to Hope Harbor. The second annual Stop Human Trafficking Workshop March 5, 2011 Temple Baptist Church Kim Willams, Chairman of Stop Human Trafficking Workshop SI Lodi members at 2010 workshop New Member Profile Elizabeth Blanchard is a former member of SI Stockton and past Governor of SPR. She was also Soroptimist International VP and was proud to represent our country on the international level. She saw an article in the Stockton Record about SI Lodi activities and called Bev Lacy to see if she could join SI Lodi. Liz is a Psychology Instructor at San Joaquin Delta College and former San Joaquin County Planning Commissioner. She is presently serving on the Commissioner on the Stockton Port Authority. This position requires that she travel frequently. The Chinese Cultural Society was organized in 1978; it was not until 1984 that the Society established its program of honoring a single individual as the Outstanding Chinese Citizen of the Year. In 1998 Dr. Elizabeth Blanchard, educator and community leader was named given this award. She has traveled to China and 72 other countries. Page 3 SI Lodi Newsletter Jan 2011

4 Robyn cuts ribbon at her new store Member Celebration Soroptimist Robyn Grace Jennings joined SI Lodi in She has been selling See s Candy for SI Lodi in her new shop Taste of Heaven. She presented the club w ith a check for $ in January. She is show n cutting the ribbon for her new shop in October. Robyn also w rites an article for the Lodi New s Sentinel on the food page. She has had a challenging year w ith her health but is now excited about her new challenge. Rollin in Ribs IV Members are planning for the fourth annual Rollin in Ribs. Members will donate items for the Live and Silent auctions. This is an all-you-can-eat rib feed including salad, bread, ravioli and vegetables. The event will be held May 14, 2011 at the Lodi Elks Lodge. All members are expected to buy a ticket, and donate an auction item. Program Speaker The speaker at our November meeting was Catherine Pennington; Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education from Lodi Unified School District enlightened us on the current state of Education in our local schools. She is shown here with President Bev and Program Committee member Pat Hill who are both retired from Lodi School District. Night at Ricks Pizza Bingo Night was held Jan. 12, 2011 The club earned 30% of all sales for one day for those who had a flyer. Co-President Bev accepts check for $ Debbie wins black out bingo. 5 SI Christmas Party 2010 Dec. 14, 2010 SI Lodi held their annual Christmas Dinner and Auction at Strings Italian Café. Lori and Ora did a great job of planning the event. The club earned $1700 for their service projects at the event. Members donated gifts that were auctioned by Merry. Bev and Robyn donated items for a raffle.
