2 SUBJECT: Advent FROM: (Rev. Msgr.) Robert E. Harahan, S.T.D. If our perspective is baseball, we have a lot of waiting to do before life kicks in again. If skiing is our passion, then life will take on new meaning with the first snowfall. If reading does it for us, we can t wait to curl up with a great read that has been sitting on our shelf. If shopping is the thing, then the season is now. It all depends on our perspective: what is the controlling value for us? How do we see the world and choose to respond to it? Today we have a chance to redefine ourselves in light of God s promise and action. We begin a new year of grace and liturgical life. Advent recalls the preparations made for the first coming of Christ. We live knowing that Jesus will come again and each day is our preparation for that coming. Christ is our perspective. The Kingdom announced by Jesus is our world. The controlling value for us is eternal life. There are a lot of good reasons to celebrate Advent this year. We know them through the suffering and distress of our world. We know them through our failures and the flaws that haunt us. Our lives benefit from the challenge that comes from the birth of Christ in our world. Jesus calls to us to do with our lives what He did with His: to know that salvation is on the line, that our hearts are called to conversion, that discovering and doing the Father s will are the only perspectives worth embracing. It s always difficult to let go of the things of this world. They often appear to be in strong competition with the Christ and His teaching. We begin Advent knowing that in Jesus there is light, not darkness; water, not desert; and hope, not empty promises. It does take time for Isaiah s mountains to be brought low and his valleys to be filled in. But we start here; we begin again; we move ahead with faith. As we listen to what the children want, let us teach them what we really need. As we plan to celebrate this time together, let us be renewed in deep bonds of faith. As we rush with frantic determination through malls and events, let us take time for our own hearts to grow. As we prepare for the holidays, let us remember the holy day. Christ has come. He will come again. Let us welcome Him in. With every good thought and prayer, Fr. Harahan

3 SUBJECT: Former NBA Player Chris Herren to Speak at Seton Hall Prep FROM: Michael Gallo, Assistant Headmaster On December 17 th, Chris Herren will be speaking to our Sophomore and Senior Classes. Chris is a dynamic speaker who will be talking to our students about his rise and fall in the NBA due to his addictions. Alcohol and drug free since August 2008, Chris Herren, a former NBA player, now speaks to schools about drug abuse, including opiates. His mission is to educate kids on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and good decision making. He provides real world techniques on how to handle pressure within a teen s life. He hopes to spare kids from the tortuous journey he experienced. I can t imagine what it would be like to be a high school kid dependent on a substance, he said. It s the roughest world you can exist in. I heard Chris speak last year and his message is powerful. Due to time constraints Chris can only give us one presentation. Chris will be presenting later on that evening at Ridge High School. The presentation is free for those that register with the Somerset YMCA ahead of time. 5 SUBJECT: Order a Yearbook FROM: Lisa Sgaramella TO ORDER A YEARBOOK (all grades) Click on or visit and follow the instructions for ordering a Seton Hall Prep yearbook. Personalize it, order accessories, and pay with your credit card. The first line of personalization is included in the price of the yearbook. Cost: $80 on or before 1/15/16 and $100 after 1/15/16. On 2/26/16, the online ordering system closes and yearbooks may only be ordered through Mrs. Sgaramella (No yearbooks will be personalized after 2/26/16) You must order a yearbook online if you wish to have one. 6 SUBJECT: Place a senior yearbook ad FROM: Lisa Sgaramella TO ORDER A SENIOR AD Click on or visit and follow the instructions to upload your photos, create your student ad, and pay for it. Cost: Full page: $375 Half page: $225 Quarter page: $125 These prices do not include a yearbook. If you purchase a senior ad, you must also purchase a yearbook (instructions at the top of this page). No ads are created through the school they must be created and purchased online or through the mail to Jostens. Instructions for ordering through the mail can be found on the website. 7 SUBJECT: Winter Clothes Drive FROM: Campus Ministry A winter clothes drive will be held from December 1 to December 17. Coats, hats, gloves, scarves, pants, and all other winter clothes will be accepted. Please leave clothes in the designated bins outside of Campus Ministry or the Dean of Men s Office. All clothes will be distributed to people in need from West Orange. Please see senior Griffin Maher or Mrs. Rondinella with any questions.

8 SUBJECT: Mothers Auxiliary December 2015 Newsletter FROM: Cathy DeCarlo-Egan - President, SHP Mothers Auxiliary The 36 th Annual Dinner & Fashion Show, Puttin on the Glitz, was a HUGE SUCCESS! Thank you to co- chairs Donna Pinto and Janet Burke for all of their hard work and months of planning for this fabulous event! A heartfelt thanks to all the 17 committee chairs and numerous volunteers who generously gave their time and talent to ensure the success of this annual event. It truly was a night filled with fun, fashion and wonderful prizes! A special thank you and farewell to the senior mothers who have chaired committees for the Mothers Auxiliary Fashion Shows for the past three years. Maura Haviland Gift Auction, Diane Starita Runway, Veronica Wakefield & Valerie Morrison Reservations and Shannon Schlageter- Decorations/Licensing and co- chair of 2013 Fashion Show. Because of the great team effort and to all who contributed, the Mothers Auxiliary will present Monsignor Kelly and Monsignor Harahan with a donation that will directly benefit our sons. Congratulations and much gratitude to the entire Prep community! Christmas Social Tuesday, December 8 th at 7:00 pm in the SHP Dining Room. This is not a formal meeting but a merry and cheerful celebration of Christmas. Dinner will be provided but feel free to bring a bottle of cheer! It is our tradition to hold an ornament exchange join in this festive activity by bringing a wrapped ornament. Beautiful gift baskets will be raffled off with proceeds to benefit a SHP family in need. The Prep store and SHP Bookstore will be open for your holiday shopping. 9 SUBJECT: Fathers Club, December 2015 Newsletter FROM: Thomas Young, Jr. President The Fathers Club continues to build on its great start to the new school year. November was a special month as we held the Annual Family Communion & Breakfast on November 1 st at Mayfair Farms. Over 200 family & friends shared in the Mass and enjoyed seeing Louis Puoplolo, Anthony Esposito and Michael Sheppard 77 honored for their service to The Prep. The Pirate s Cove had its busiest night of the season as The Prep Football Team hosted a State Playoff game on November 13 th. Thanks again to all the volunteers who helped make these events a success. At our monthly meeting, several speakers provided informative updates on happenings around our Community: Michael Gallo, Asst. Headmaster, provided an update on the school s Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) Policies as presented to the student body; he also shared some positive news on the KAC construction activities. Larry Baggitt provided an update on the Fall sports teams and the recent developments of the NJ super conference realignment and how it affects SHP. Tom Lynch and Tony Esposito gave updates on our involvement at the Prep Open House and the Pirate s Cove concessions. The Father s Club continues to update our list and if you aren t receiving our communications, Mike Nilan at mnilan26@comcast.net and we ll be sure add you to the list. Volunteers are always needed for a multitude of activities. If you are not sure how to help, please reach out to either Tom or me at the contacts below. We encourage all Prep fathers to join us at the monthly meetings (where dinner is always served) and to participate in our activities to support the Prep. Each meeting includes updates on current topics of interest at the school and a presentation by a guest speaker, including faculty and staff at SHP.
