On Wednesday, 19 th at 7:30pm, as part of the Don Rinehart Lecture Series, Dr. Jacqueline Bussie will be speaking on her book, Outlaw Christian. The lecture will be held in the Miller Chapel as is completely free and open to the public. This reason I am specifically telling all of you about this is because Dr. Bussie is awesome. She has a way of addressing really hard issues with amazing authenticity. I ll admit I m a bit bias, she was my professor at Capital University and has been a major influence on my life. Her book (and the topic of the lecture) is all about dealing with the brokenness in this world and in our own lives. She talks about how important it is to lift our hurt, our pain, and our suffering to God. Inadvertently or not, all too often the church has made us feel as if we should never question God, never doubt God, never yell at or be angry with God. Dr. Bussie confronts this false notion of faith head on. Faith does not mean doubtless. Indeed, lives of faith are full of doubt and full of questions. We don t always understand why such horrible things happen to us, to our loved ones, and to the world. We don t always get answers. And so we take our very real faith, and we cry out to God. And that is absolutely okay. We try so hard to come up with explanations for things, to make excuses for a God who loves us and yet allows evil things to happen, to explain away or force meaning into painful situations with go to saying and phrases that are too simplistic and best and faith destroying at worst. God needed another angel in heaven. God never gives you more than you can handle. Everything happens for a reason. God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. These are damaging idioms that we as Christians absolutely need to stop saying to one another. All this is to say, if you find yourself free on Wednesday the 19 th, please come and join us at the Miller Chapel. It ll do your faith some good. Carotid Artery Screening (Plaque) Ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries that screens for buildup of fatty plaque - the leading cause of strokes Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening Uses ultrasound and blood pressure measurements to check for peripheral arterial disease (plaque build-up) in the lower extremities. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound is used to screen for the existence of an aneurysm (enlargement) in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a ruptured aortic artery. Atrial Fibrillation A quick and easy test using EKG electrodes placed on the arms and legs to identify the presence of an irregular heartbeat at the time of screening. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke by 5 times. Osteoporosis Risk An ultrasound measurement of the heel bone to determine abnormal bone mass density. Dorcas Circle meets the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of each month in the Fellowship Hall at 1:00 p.m. In we will meet on the 12th to pack up the quilts for sending to Lutheran World Relief. We will meet again on the 26th to cut material for squares to make up our quilts. All are welcome to join us for our continuing project for making quilts for those in need.

Reformation Sunday honors Martin Luther's bold action on 31st, On that date Luther posted his statement of faith, known as the 95 Theses, on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, thus beginning the Protestant Reformation. In some parts of Europe, Reformation Day is a civil holiday celebrated on 31st, a day to commemorate the vast social and political change that resulted from Luther's actions. Reformation Sunday is celebrated as a day to honor the root beliefs of Protestant Christianity: that faith in Christ is all that's needed for salvation, and the Bible, not any human leader, is the true authority in matters of faith. As Luther said when questioned about his views, "Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason -- I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other -- my conscience is captive to the word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen."
