At least eight thank you letters and cards have been sent by the missionaries at the New Tribes Mission Group in Sanford, FL. They have been posted in the Fellowship Room for you to read. Mission & Outreach made a donation for car parts to help the Holloway Car team repair the missionaries vehicles as part of their annual Mission trip there. Please take a moment to read these wonderful letters. Congratulations to Kyle Miller and Lisa Dunaway! They will be married here in August of Lisa became a member at St John s in Since that time her life has been blessed by the congregation. She has lived in Newark her entire life and has worked at the Licking County Board of DD for the past 20 years. Kyle has lived in Licking County his entire life and has been a part of the United Methodist church from childhood. Kyle has worked in the field of DD for over 29 years and currently works in Fairfield County. Kyle and Lisa feel very blessed to have found each other and look forward to sharing their lives together with the Lord. Congratulations! (reprinted from the Newark Advocate) COTC employees honored for work NEWARK - Three employees of Central Ohio Technical College recently received the League for Innovation in the Community College John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award. Brian Boehmer is superintendent of facilities and support services. Connie Philips is professor of information technology. Matt Russo is assistant professor of culinary science technology.

2 Pastor s Thoughts Rev. Mark Katrick Amrita Chaturvedi, who describes herself as a spare time writer and art lover, posted this proverb on April showers bring May flowers, That is what they say. But if all the showers turned to flowers, We d have quite a colorful day! Since we had a showery and warm April - some of us have already cut the grass several times - let s bring on the May flowers! That s what my mom would have been saying about now. She had flower beds in the front yard, the backyard and everywhere in between. If dad hadn t insisted on having his patches of grass to cut, the whole place would have grown up in daisies. Prominent this time of year was a lilac bush on the side of the hill upon which our little two-story house was built. The Common Purple Lilac (Syringa Vulgaris) is described by as the most popular lilac variety. It provides fantastic spring color every year without fail. In the spring, your Lilac will burst into bloom. Lovely clusters of lavender flowers sit against dark green, heart shaped leaves, and the fragrance is just delightful. These plants are so aromatic butterflies and hummingbirds find them irresistible. Although it s been recreated for perfumes and candles, nothing compares to the scent of fresh Lilac. The fragrance is captivating; literally spring will be in the air for weeks, if not months. Unfailingly, year after year, right before our eyes (and noses), mom s lilac bush brought these words from scripture to life: For behold the winter is past; the flowers appear on earth, the time of singing has come. (Song of Solomon 2:11-12) The blooms from mom s lilac bush decorated our home, the homes of our relatives and the gravestones of our dearly departed. I was recently asked how many of my Lorain County family members still remain. Out of all those aunts and uncles and cousins, I could only name one cousin. After a brief moment of missing them and the sadness that goes along with it, came a happy and joyful moment of knowing that they are all together in a place where spring is in the air forever. Don t let this season get away from you without fully appreciating and enjoying its sights, sounds and smells. These represent not only the spring that is here and now, but the eternal spring to come with its most fantastic colors and delightful fragrances. Then go and share the Good News of this Easter season: That no eye has seen nor ear heard what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 Chucky It s back! My favorite time of the year is when the Drive-In service starts up again. This year s sunrise service featured: So many cars that there wasn t even enough room for my cousin Chester and me to park our wind-up cars. So much wind that even the pastor couldn t compete with it. Snacks from worshippers. More snacks from breakfast downstairs. (The only thing church mice like more than donut crumbs are scrambled egg bits.) No neighborhood cats. They were all sleeping in except for the kitty that came in the car. Warm weather. After eight years of freezing temperatures and cold rain, Pastor Mark can t complain anymore. And church mice never complain about cold weather because we got fur!

The Holy Spirit The Church and Communion of Saints The Forgiveness of Sins The Resurrection of the Body Afternoon Circle s 145 th Anniversary Meeting The Afternoon Circle of the Women s Guild of St. John s United Church of Christ will meet on Wednesday, May 3, to celebrate the 145 th Anniversary of their founding in A Pot-Luck Salad Luncheon will be held at 12:00 noon in the Fellowship Room (beverages and rolls will be provided). Afterward, a program entitled I Remember When Mom will be presented by a couple of surprise guests. Following a long standing tradition, a special anniversary offering of 1 penny for each year ($1.45) will be collected from each person. All ladies (and even gentlemen) of the congregation are invited to attend. Just please call either Dorothy Turdo or Donna Hewitt to R.S.V.P. See you there! St. John s has changed our RADIO FREQUENCY! Sunday Services on WCLT 98.7FM As you know, St. John s 10:30 a.m. Sunday services can be heard at 9 a.m. Sunday mornings on WCLT Radio. In the past, we were broadcast on 1490AM, but that is changing. Now tune your radio to 98.7FM at the same time to hear our worship services. The FM channel is a better quality of signal, even in bad weather. 4 From the Mission and Outreach Committee NEWS FROM CHURCH COUNCIL Thank you letters for our donations have been received from Church World Service, Make a Wish, Coalition of Care, the Food Pantry, and Community Health Clinic. Our donations for April went to - Special Olympics ($200), Red Cross ($200), and Alzheimer s Association ($200). St. John s again hosted the South Newark Civic Association clean-up day on Saturday, April 22. Our next committee meeting will be May 4, at 6:30 p.m., at the church. Thank you for the Portrayal Once again, St. John s members and friends were moved by the presentation of the Portrayal of the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. We thank the men and women who spent countless hours with construction, decoration, taping, make-up, cooking, acting, etc. to make davinci s painting come to life again. Since 1965 (52 years) our congregation has given this gift to our community. All of the work is done during a very busy Holy Week, and we express our thanks to all who participated in any way to see that it is done well. All of us have a richer Easter experience whether we worked in or observed The Portrayal. Thank you very much. Happy Mother s Day!

7 Everyone, children and adults alike! May 7 at 1:00pm we will meet at Price Road Health and Rehabilitation. The Ring-Out Bell Choir will perform (all ages can join in) we will share some scripture readings and have gifts to hand out to the residents while we visit. Bring a sack lunch and join us after the 10:30am service in the meeting room and then we can caravan there, or meet us there at 1pm. Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June :00am to 11:30pm. Hero Central is our theme. Kids will discover the qualities that make us truly heroic in God. Volunteers are needed, sign-up sheet in the Fellowship room.
