Colleen Kroah made the Newark High School Principal s List. Matthew Kroah made the Heritage Middle School Honor Roll. Honor Flight Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Weldon Dudley Jr., a member of St. John s, was a recent participant in the Honor Flight. We would like to thank him for his service to our country and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor!
2 Dear members and friends of St. John s: The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed, not just on the body but the soul. Alfred Austin On Mother s Day weekend, Laura s daughters, Emily and Kelsey, and our grandchildren, Eli and Stella, and I got our heads in the sun by surprising grandma with a raised garden. Operation Secret Garden could not have been pulled off without the help and expert advice of St. John s members Ed Hummel, Jeremy Hill and Sandy Johnson. Ed put together the frame, Jeremy cut the pieces for it and Sandy helped Kelsey and me to make good choices while shopping at Wilson s Garden Center. In case you are interested in knowing, we planted seedlings (tomatoes, green peppers, onions, chives and basil) and seeds (green beans and peas). The kids did a great job painting sticks to mark off the rows. We topped things off (pun intended) by planting flowers around the yard. It took close to fifty bags of soil to fill an 8x6 bed. Thanks to beneficial rains sent by God, our need for watering has been minimal. Though she had not been planning on getting her hands dirty, Laura thoroughly enjoyed her Mother s Day garden, especially setting aside that little corner just for Eli and Stella to play in the dirt. Whether you have a garden in the backyard or not, I thought you might enjoy some food to nurture your souls with these verses from an unknown author. Plant three rows of peas: Peace of mind Peace of heart Peace of soul Plant four rows of squash: Squash gossip Squash indifference Squash grumbling Squash selfishness Plant four rows of lettuce: Lettuce be faithful Lettuce be kind Lettuce be obedient Lettuce really love one another No garden should be without turnips: Turnip for meetings Turnip for service Turnip to help one another Water freely with patience and Cultivate with love. There is abundance in your garden... Because you reap what you sow. To conclude our garden, We must have thyme: Thyme for God Thyme for study Thyme for prayer Pretty nice garden! (Wouldn t you say?) Happy gardening and happy summer to you all! In Christ s Love, Rev. Mark
3 Chucky the Church Mouse Going golfing with the St. John s Golfers! - Golf bags have lots of pockets and pouches (just the right size for sneaking critters onto the course). - While we re riding along in there, we make ourselves useful by putting a nice, sharp edge on those golf tees. - Golfers eat snacks (Chester and me like cheesy crackers and sunflower seeds) - Since the Rev doesn t keep score, we do it for him. Hey Rev, do you want to know what you REALLY shot last round? - We re not afraid to get our paws dirty. We always replace divots. These guys make sure we get lots of practice! - There s nothing more refreshing than running through a sprinkler or rinsing off in a ball washer. - We get lots of tips nudging balls that hang on lips or land behind trees. - But we don t do sand. A sand trap is like the Sahara Desert to a mouse. - It s a great place to watch the birdies. Way to go, Larry! We ll see you on the golf course! Potluck Dinner There will be a potluck dinner after the 10:30 service on July 1st. Dr. Owen Lee will talk about his recent trip to Burma, how medicine is practiced there, the political situation, the Pagoda and the city. Deanna Windon, the author of Gentle Moon, the Story of Molly Lee will be our special guest. More details will be shared in the bulletin as they become available. Afternoon Circle -will meet on Wednesday, June 6, at 1:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Janet Snyder will provide the refreshments. After our program, we will discuss plans for dressing up the front/side entrance to the church, making it more welcoming and inviting. And, we will continue our study of I Go To The Rock. Please RSVP to Dorothy Turdo ( ) or Donna Hewitt ( ) Last month s 146 th Anniversary celebration was a beautiful affair with so many beautiful and delicious salads, a look back at The Ladies and The Fortress, and a gorgeous cake. There were 70 women who began the Ladies Aid Society in All the ladies of our St. John s Family are invited to be a part of the Afternoon Circle, the descendant of that original group. We meet for fellowship, and to fulfill the original purpose of the Society: for the furthering of the spirit of cooperation and Christian love among the various members of the congregation, to help in beautifying the church, and to care for the sick and those in need. Join Us, please!

6 Mission Trip News: Sharing Hope in Eastern Kentucky On June 3, the St. John s Mission team will leave for Big Creek Missions in Bear Branch, Kentucky. Big Creek Missions came to our attention by way of a post card in 2014 which contained information about a very economic, full-service mission trip opportunity. It was far enough away to feel like we were going away and close enough not to drain our resources or leaders. Each year it becomes clearer that we had, quite by accident, found a gem nestled in the beautiful hills of Leslie County in Eastern Kentucky. Big Creek Mission has wonderful leaders, workers, staff, and the chance to serve the people of the area with community programs, children s programs and construction projects. However if you ask Big Creek what their mission is they will say it is to expose outside groups to the rich local culture and teach the missionary life-style so they can go home and find needs in their own community. Sharing hope and salvation through Christ is priority above finishing construction or planning events. Starting in 2004 with 100 volunteers, they rapidly grew to 1800 volunteers by Big Creek Missions has a wonderful story that you can read about at This is our fourth mission trip to Eastern Kentucky and we are continuing to learn about the struggles and needs of the area. In an online article from 24/7 Wall St. The Worst Counties to Live In by Evan Comen contains a list of the 50 most difficult counties in the United States to live in. This list was compiled using measurements of poverty, education, and life expectancy at birth. The top 50 worst counties include areas that have yet to recover from decades of economic and population decline, high unemployment, and public health issues due to the loss of employment opportunities in the U.S. mining and manufacturing industries and other economic trends that have hurt the country s most vulnerable areas. This list includes counties from all over the United States yet, 1/3 are located in Kentucky. These include McCreary 5, Clay 6, Breathitt 8, Bell 10, Leslie 11, Martin 13, Harlin 16, Knox 19, Floyd 24, Jackson 28, Perry 31, Letcher 33, Magoffin 34, Eastill 38, Knott 41. All of these counties are centered around Leslie County where Big Creek Missions is located.
