2 Dear members and friends: Author Virginia Patterson tells of a four-year-old girl named Cindy who wanted very much to go to school. Her older sister went to school. Her mother taught school. And her father was the principal of the school. The kids Cindy liked were all in school. Why couldn t she go? Her mother and father kept telling her that she could go...when she was six. One morning when they were having family devotions, Cindy refused to join in. When her parents asked her why, she replied, I m mad at God. Why? her parents asked. Because I ve asked Him and asked Him to make me six, and He won t! On Sunday, September 16th, church school classes will resume at St. John s and you don t have to be six to attend. Our Christian Education Director, Julie Kroah and the CE Committee have excellent programs planned for children, youth and adults. And I m happy to say we have a confirmation class that I am privileged to teach. With classrooms sitting unused in many churches, you may ask, why Church school is still important and relevant. Beth Moore thinks it is. She says, Sunday school was where she had a falling in love moment with Jesus as a child. Reese Witherspoon takes her kids to church and Sunday school and they love it. She believes it s really important for a child to feel that there are things bigger than your life out there. For John D. Rockefeller, Sunday School was of great help to (him), greater perhaps than any other force in his Christian life. Elizabeth Warren grew up in the Methodist Church and taught Sunday school. One of her favorite passages of scripture is as much as you have done this to the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done it unto me. Matthew 25:40 It was two months short of my sixth birthday that I started the first grade. I remember my mom walking me to the end of our circular drive to catch the school bus and being there to meet me at the end of the day. Since I went to Catholic school, religion class happened every day. I loved hearing Bible stories and coloring Bible pictures. It was where I first started thinking about going into the ministry. A little boy, who is six, comes home from his first day of school, and his mother asks, What did you learn today? Not enough, he replies. They said I have to go back tomorrow. On September 16th, please prayerfully consider going back to school to fall in love with Jesus all over again, to learn new scripture passages, and to rediscover that there are things bigger than your life. Don t be mad, be glad that Christian Education is for all people of all ages and is still a force to be reckoned with. You don t even have to come back next Sunday, but I am sure you will want to. 3 Chucky What I did on my first day of school: In spelling class, we learned how to spell CAT. I already know how to spell CHURCH MOUSE, my last name. In math class, we learned how to add - one bag of Cheetos plus one bag of Cheetos equals two bags. We also learned subtraction - two bags of Cheetos minus two bags means Chester and me ate em. In language class, we learned a very important second language - dog. Woof, Woof! In gym class, we exercised on a hamster s wheel. For lunch we had grilled cheese AND tomato soup! Yum. In shop class, we learned how to build things and take things apart like springs off of mouse traps. But I like Sunday school at St. John s best of all. Come and see me and Chester on Rally Day, September 9th and on the first day of classes on September 16th! AFTERNOON CIRCLE The Afternoon Circle will meet again on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 1:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Devotions will be given by Bev Lange. Dorothy Turdo is in charge of refreshments. We will be signing up to do the Coffee Hours during the month of October. Our program will be on Fresh Starts. Our rock study this month is The Wailing Wall. Every lady of the congregation is invited to attend and bring a friend. Please call either Dorothy Turdo ( ) or Donna Hewitt ( ) to tell us you are coming. 4 NEWS FROM CHURCH COUNCIL Meeting on Aug. 21, 2018 From the Treasurer: The budget is currently running at a $4,000 deficit. The Lammers Memorial Sunday offering was $ The current balance of the Lammers Fund is just under $19,000. From the Pastor: Rev. Katrick has now started classes for the Wellstreams Program of Spiritual Formation and Training in the Art of Spiritual Direction. There are now 5 potential participants in this fall s Confirmation Class. From Christian Education: The new Confirmation Class will be using curriculum through the Re-Form series by Sparkhouse. The Adult Sunday School Class will be using Cultures on Conflict by Ray VanderLann for their studies this fall. Youth and Parents will soon be having an organizational meeting for this fall. Rally Day is Sunday, Sept. 9, with a pot-luck breakfast and the theme, JESUS ROCKS. From Property Management: The carpets and the pew pads have been cleaned. Downspouts were installed on the north side of the building near the Bride s Room to help relieve the backup of water during hard rains. The landscaping of the patio area will be done during September. More security cameras have been installed, and a larger hard drive was added to the security recorder. From Personnel: Committee members will be meeting with all paid staff. We are currently trying to determine market salary information to compare against current salaries to insure they are competitive. From Music: Choir practice will resume on September 6; returning for worship on September 9. From Neighborhood Outreach Home Repair Project: Work has already begun on the home at 27 Franklin Ave. Several work nights have been held. From the Foundation Fund: A fund has been established for Doris J. Sheets. 5 Rally Day/Invite a Friend Day is September 9. This will be the kick off to the new church school year. Plan to attend the Potluck breakfast and Rally Day Program Jesus Rocks at 9am. Please bring a dish to share, drinks will be provided. We will be painting rocks to share the message of Jesus with those around us. Also, that day we will be dedicating the murals in the education wing. Please take a moment to see these beautiful murals. The 9:00am Adult Sunday school class will now be open to Youth ages 14 and up. The fall we will be discussing Cultures in Conflict by Ray Vander Laan. This study is a video lesson and discussion on Paul speaking to the Romans. We are in need of teachers for the Bible Discovery Zone as well as Cradle Role. Usually teachers teach one Sunday a month during the 10:30am service. Lessons are prepared and in the classroom ahead of time. See Julie Kroah is you are able to help. Mark your calendars! Our annual Trunk or Treat community event is scheduled for October 29, from 4 6pm. See you there!
