This 2-session class is for new members, old members, & curious visitors who want to know what it means to be a member of Beaver Dam Church. Pastor Greg will meet with you in the Sanctuary during the Bible Study hour to discuss our history, beliefs, affiliations, structure, and ministries. 2 Pastor Greg s BDB (Beaver Dam Blog) It seems we ve had a long winter. Even though the calendar says it s spring, we ve had temperatures hanging around in the 40 s longer than usual, and a late season snow storm has put many of us in a foul mood. When is it going to get warm?.and stay warm? And then there is Easter. Even though it is THE preeminent holiday of our faith, it doesn t quite get the popularity it should. Christmas is the holiday that gets all of the accolades. With Christmas, we spend the weeks (and sometimes months) before preparing, decorating, and lavishly spending on others (and sometimes ourselves) and society encourages it, all in the name of the birth of Jesus. There s not much hoopla in Easter. The 6-week season of preparation is called Lent and is basically known as a time of giving up something, not accumulating more. Society pretty much knows Easter as a time when the kids get a week off for spring break and it s OK to eat chocolate. And if people are fortunate enough to identify Easter with Jesus there s a good chance it s associated with his death rather than his resurrection. Another good man was killed. The resurrection thing sounds like a good legend. But the reality is, Easter changed everything. If ever there was a watershed moment in the history of the world, it was that day about 33 A.D. when God rolled away the stone from an unmarked tomb and out walked a human being who had been declared dead three days earlier. Yes, it seems like legend, and it assuredly takes a certain amount of faith to believe that extraordinary event occurred, but there was no doubt among the witnesses who were there. They initially doubted then believed. History records that their faith in this event was so strong that they willingly gave their lives to this new Jesus is Alive movement. They were persecuted and killed. They lost their jobs. They traveled to distant lands to tell others. They sacrificed their normal lives to tell other people that Easter changed everything. So even though Easter won t get the honor it deserves this year, it is still a milestone event. It means that our sins are forgiven. That Jesus took on the entire world s sins that day and that the world s debt has been paid. According to scripture, not only am I forgiven, but because of the resurrection, I ve been declared not guilty of any and all sins.and to take it a step further there isn t even going to be a trial in God s eyes, it s like I had never broken any of God s laws to begin with all because of the perfect life and sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus. It means that death doesn t win. That when life is over here on earth that isn t all there is. The resurrection is Jesus victory over death, and scripture tells us that we will be resurrected after our death. Those wonderful words of Jesus in John 11 are a keeper: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. It means that the power that raised Jesus from the dead is accessible to us. Check out Paul in Romans 8: But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. And Paul prayed that we might understand and use this power in Ephesians 3: I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God s right hand in the heavenly realms. Whoa! 3 Pastor Greg s BDB cont d Continued from previous page... having access to that kind of power for the things that we do here I don t often enough! It means that I have power within me to not do the things that I really don t want to do (but end up doing because of temptation). Similarly, those things that I can t imagine ever being able to do I can do through the power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, that watershed moment of a couple thousand years ago is still for us today. So even though the weather is colder than usual and we still get snow and frost from time the calendar says spring and we KNOW that warmer weather is on the way--and so we have hope. In the same way we live in a sinful, broken, messed-up, pagan, winter-type world but the calendar of God s word tells us that it's spring, and it is affirmed in our hearts and often through nature and the love of one another and the Church. And so we KNOW that Christ has been resurrected and that God is putting the world back together and that we can trust in his promises and look forward to the warm-weather of hope for our future.
