Presbyterian Connection June 2018 Volume 25 Issue Suggestions For Welcoming a New Pastor: Pray for the new Pastor daily You knew I d say that. Right? But, truly, there is no greater comfort for a pastor than to know people are praying for them by name. I can literally feel it at times. On an especially stressful day, I sense God s protection by the prayers of God s people. Love and honor the Pastor This includes helping them acclimate to the community Let the pastor have adequate time at home. Let their personal time be honored as much as their church time. Tell the Pastor your name again And again. And again, if necessary. Learning names may be the hardest thing a new pastor has to do. Give them ample time to learn yours. Don t gossip about the Pastor There will almost always be changes when a new pastor comes to a church. If you don t understand something ask. Be very careful not to propagate misunderstandings. Be a positive voice for the future. And, stop gossip and rumors as soon as you hear them. Speak encouragement Say, things like, Pastor, I m here to help. And, mean it. Introduce the Pastor to Leaders In the church and in the community, it is helpful if the Pastor knows the influencers whom they will likely encounter during their ministry. The earlier the better. Let the Pastor set the pace It will take a while for a new Pastor to figure out their stride. Give them your understanding during this time. They may not make every visit you want them to make. They may not place priority where you think it needs to be placed. They may not introduce change as fast as you want them to, or it may seem too fast. Let them set the pace especially in the early days. Don t offer a million suggestions There will be time for that, but the new Pastor needs time to learn the church. Most likely you re already doing lots of things some good and maybe some not so good. Let them learn who you are as a church before you fill their head with too many new ideas. Don t prejudge A new Pastor will make their own mistakes. Don t hold a previous Pastor s mistakes against them. Don t assume, based on their history or your expectations of them, that they will perform a certain way. They may. They may not. I came out of the church planting world and into an established church. I think some people assumed I d wear sandals on Sunday. I haven t yet. Extend the honeymoon Honestly, it usually seems too short anyway. If the Pastor begins to make any changes at all, some people lose faith in them. A new Pastor needs time to acclimate. They need time to learn you and the church. Keep loving and supporting them, even when changes become harder to make and harder to accept. If God brought the pastor to your church, God wants to use them there. Let God do as God intended. Thanks to the original Unknown Source of this treasure for Church members. 1

LIBRARY LINES - JUNE 2018 The following is a list of donated fiction books: Shelley Shepard Gray's Christmas Collection: PEACE, CHRISTMAS IN SUGAR CREEK, and GRACE; Wanda Brunstetter's Half -Stitched Series: AMISH QUILTING CLUB and THE TATTERED QUILT; Melody Carlson's Love Finds You Series: SISTERS OREGON, PENDLETON OREGON, and MARTHA'S VINEYARD; Tricia Goyer's THE BUGGY BEFORE and Elizabeth Ludwig's WHERE HOPE DWELLS. Book 1 - SISTERS, OREGON: "Hope Bartolli has avoided Sisters for years both her hometown of Sisters, Oregon and her two sisters who live there. But when the 32-year-old corporate lawyer returns home to attend her beloved grandmother's funeral, she is surprised to learn that she has inherited Nana's old house, her little dog Andy and an unexpected friendship with Nana's attorney, Lewis. If she had any hopes of burying the hatchet with her sisters, these gifts from Nana aren't going to help. But the more Hope is reacquainted with old friends and the charming town she once loved, the harder she realizes it will be to return to her fast-paced city routine. She wants more out of life but is she willing to take the risks to get it? And can she trust her family to stand by her side?" Book 1 - THE HALF-STITCHED AMISH QUILTING CLUB: "As Amish widow Emma Yoder contemplates the task ahead, her thoughts center on one: What if she fails? Longing to remove a burden from her family by becoming self-sufficient, Emma has offered to hold quilting classes in her home. But when she sees the patchwork of faces assembled for the first lesson, her confidence dwindles as doubt takes hold. There s Star Stephens, a young woman yearning for stability; Pam and Stuart Johnston, a struggling couple at odds in their marriage; Paul Ramirez, a widower hoping to find solace in finishing a quilt; Jan Sweet, a rough and tough biker doing creative community service; and Ruby Lee Williams, a preacher s wife looking for relaxation amid mounting parish problems. While Emma grows to realize her ability to share her passion for quilting and her faith, the beginning quilters learn to transform scraps of fabric into beauty. And slowly, their fragmented lives begin to take new shape some in unexpected ways with the helping hands of each other and the healing hand of God." Faye Brackett, Librarian 5

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & MEN General Meeting Tuesday, May 8, :30 a.m. Seven members were present for our May 8 meeting. Irene Bere served as acting Moderator and opened our meeting at 9:30 with a greeting and Pastor Fred Taylor gave the opening prayer. Norma Taylor gave the devotion reading from her archives dated May Reports: Secretary, Amy Johnson asked for any additions or corrections for the April meeting minutes, which were prepared by sub, Irene Bere (thank you so much for filling in). There were none and the minutes were approved as presented and will be placed on file and on the PWM bulletin board. She also read a thank-you from our Church for the PWM donation we made to Presbyterian Church of Bull Shoals in honor of our long-time PWM member and friend, Jewel Riley at her passing. Irene shared a conversation she had recently with a former member of our church, Mary Lou Guthrie who now lives in Ohio. She misses PWM and everyone here. Treasurer, Mary Kerr presented our April treasury report: Beginning balance was $ , with total receipts of $90 and total disbursements of $90 to leave an ending balance on April 30 of $ The report was approved as written and will be placed on file. Mary had distributed her 2017 Yearly Treasurer s Report last month and had an opportunity today to go over that: The beginning balance was $ with total income at $ and total disbursements of $ leaving a year-end balance of $ This will be posted on the PWM bulletin board as well as in the Connection. Publicity: Vicky Bair was not present for a report. It is noted by Amy Johnson that we need to remove from the monthly Worship folder insert notice on meetings : about bringing an offering of toiletries to each meeting. It was decided at a previous meeting that we would not continue this offering collection at our meetings. We do encourage our members to continue to give their donations directly to the church s collection of pantry items and toiletries for Bull Shoals Food Pantry. We ask that Vicky take care of striking this mention from the monthly announcements effective immediately. Irene reports for Vicky that the Baxter Bulletin no long will run notices about internal church events. Vicky does intend to get back to using the Mountaineer Echo for our meeting notices, however. Thank you, Irene for this update. Missions: Irene reported back to us that she learned from Faye Brackett that our church does plan to give $274 to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. After discussion Amy Johnson made a motion that PWM not further support PDA with our mission funds as in the past since this is a generous donation by our church. Celia Millard seconded the motion. All were in favor. With that said, discussion was opened regarding sending out funds this month to fulfill some of our missions obligations. Mary suggested sending out $100 to Marion Co. Meals on Wheels program, and $150 to the Mtn Home Christian Clinic now. That leaves $511 spendable money in our account. We have the No Bake Bake Sale in progress now until May 31, then can reassess our spending for other mission obligations at the June meeting. Other items of interest reported by Moderator Irene was to remind us that we have been supporting Our Kids of Marion Co. since at least 2001 when Roger Bates spoke at our church on their behalf. Norma spoke today to us about her personal project of making crocheted hats and scarfs for the Flippin school children with the many skeins of yarn left to her by Jewel Riley. She brought samples of her work and the yarn and is asking for help to use this surplus of yarn to help those children for next winter s needs. We re to spread the word not to buy any more yarn for this project but to see her for that and for a pattern for the hats if we need one. She s offered to speak to our entire congregation re: this need at one of our monthly Pot Luck Sunday lunches. Thank you, Norma for a giving and concerned heart for our children! Bar Codes Mailings: No report from Linda Allensworth. Church Announcements: Pastor Fred and Norma are officially announcing his retirement from our pulpit, effective May 31, He may be needed to cover the pulpit duties into June if necessary. Pastor Fred also reports that our past 2017 co-moderator of PWM, Elaine Miller has resigned from her Church responsibilities and plans to find a church closer to her new home in Mtn Home. She will be missed by all. We wish her the best. Pg. 1. of 2. Con t. 7

PW&M, cont OLD BUSINESS: After discussion it was unanimously decided to leave our meeting date of the second Tuesday of the month for our general meeting. The decision not to support Presbyterian Disaster Assistance by PWM was covered under missions. The fundraiser No-Bake Bake Sale is underway now until the end of May for donations. The fundraiser Ice Cream Social is being chaired by Celia Millard and Mary Kerr this year and the date is set for Saturday, August 4. Celia reports that several changes are on the docket: new cardstock tickets will be numbered this year and the hand-out fliers (posters) will be redesigned for a fresh look. She asks that we get these fliers to all local churches as in the past. NEW BUSINESS: Irene reports that Peni Lloyd has had to resign as our 2018 Moderator for PWM due to Ed s health and her other involvements. After discussion, it was temporarily decided that Ada Jeffrey (present today) will moderate the June 12 meeting and has agreed to serve as Acting Moderator for the remainder of the year. Amy Johnson volunteered to give the devotion reading for the June meeting Next General meeting: Tuesday June 12 at 9:30 AM with Ada Jeffrey moderating and Amy Johnson giving the devotion. Closing prayer today by Amy Johnson Our Moderator Irene Bere adjourned the meeting at 11 AM Respectfully submitted by Secretary Amy Johnson Pg. 2. of 2. Till We Speak Again JUNE 2018 Nature and the world around us is such a wonder. It seems that everything works with such precision: the four seasons, day and night, even feast or famine. But there is one small thing I can t seem to fit into the scheme of things, TICKS. They are parasites feeding off of the blood of animals and people, spreaders of disease, not to mention just plain gross. The only thing I know they are good for is guinea fowl eat them by the bushels. This sent my mind in a whole other direction. Are we parasites feeding off of the praise and admiration of others, or the money and power they possess? As Christian we shouldn t care about such trivial things. We should love our neighbor as ourselves, not just the few handpicked ones. We shouldn t act like a tick by being a parasite or a nuisance. Luv, Millie Thought for the Day: Take a walk enjoy nature, but don t forget the tick repellant. 8

RECIPE FOR JUNE Chicken Teriyaki INGREDIENTS 3/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic 2 Tablespoons cornstarch + 2 Tablespoons water 2 small boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 (12 oz.) bag stir-fry vegetables (Can be found in the produce section) 3 cups cooked brown or white rice INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9 13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray. Combine soy sauce, ½ cup water, brown sugar, ginger and garlic in a small saucepan and cover. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove lid and cook for one minute once boiling. Meanwhile, stir together the corn starch and 2 tablespoons of water in a separate dish until smooth. Once sauce is boiling, add mixture to the saucepan and stir to combine. Cook until the sauce starts to thicken then remove from heat. Place the chicken breasts in the prepared pan. Pour one cup of the sauce over top of chicken. Place chicken in oven and bake 35 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from oven and shred chicken in the dish using two forks. *Meanwhile, steam or cook the vegetables according to package directions. Add the cooked vegetables and rice to the casserole dish with the chicken. Add most of the remaining sauce, reserving a bit to drizzle over the top when serving. Gently toss everything together in the casserole dish until combined. Return to oven and cook 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes before serving. Drizzle each serving with remaining sauce. Enjoy! 10
