1 THE RENEWAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HAVRE DE GRACE 551 Franklin Street, Havre de Grace, MD Church (410) October 2018 Dear Friends, The Letter to the Hebrews, like the Letter of James which we read last month, is another one of the lesser-read books of the Bible. Surprisingly, it has a message that is quite applicable to people today. The letter was written to disciples of Jesus in Palestine who had come to faith through Judaism. At one time their faith in Jesus was strong and vibrant. But now facing struggles, trials, and persecution, their faith had grown weak, with some returning to Judaism. The letter is an appeal to remain strong in faith. This message rings true in the church today. We are losing members. Our influence seems to be waning. We cling to practices that no longer reach the needs of people today. There is frequent harmful conflict among us. It is a good time to return to the foundation of our faith and to remember what it is we believe. The letter begins with Jesus and speaks about who he is. He watches over us more than any guardian angel. He is greater than any sacrifice we can offer. He brings us closer to the heart of God than any high priest. The letter helps us to take a fresh look at Jesus. The letter says that life is like a race, a marathon. It is about setting good and high goals. About not quitting when the terrain is steep and we encounter foul weather. About keeping our eyes fixed on the goal and not giving up or giving in to lesser goals. And the letter tells us that there is a cloud of witnesses cheering for us and encouraging us as we run in this race. Moses and the Apostles and Jesus himself are all pulling for us. We hope to learn something new about running the race of faith and to encourage each other about reaching the goal set for us. Faithfully, Rich (linkmail06@gmail.com) 1

4 Announcements and Prayer Concerns The Vine Food Pantry always needs: Peanut Butter, Jelly/Jams, Spaghetti/Sauce, Canned meats, Mac & Cheese, and Cereals. Pick up one or two items the next time you re shopping and drop them at church on Sunday. If everyone brings 1 item, which will be items a week the pantry could stay full. PRAYER CONCERNS Our church family and friends. Prayers for our country, our president, our military, our law enforcement and our first responders. Edith Hoffman requests prayer for her husband Fred. Continued prayers for Ron & Carolyn Mathias. Continued prayers for Leola Leffler and family. Continued prayers for 8-year old Riley (diagnosed with leukemia) and her grandmother Sandy and their family. Continued prayers for Pat Allingham s sister Cyndy Hartsfield, healing from a fall. Continued prayers for Faith Andreen. Her neurology visit went well. She does indeed have migraines and will be taking medication to manage. Her injured foot just needs a boot and 2 more weeks rest. They x-rayed both feet to compare and found that there is a serious issue with her other foot. That foot has never had pain or been any problem, but it revealed osteochondritis desiccants in the X-ray, which may require surgery. She is having an MRI to assess. Please pray that her good foot is okay and that it won t require surgery. Prayers for Jane Martin s sister Linda diagnosed with shingles. Prayers for Rite Aid shooting victims and their families. Prayers for those affected by the South Carolina and North Carolina flooding. Emma Weitzel asked for prayers for her friends. Prayers for Hannah Boyd (niece of Lew and Pam), suffered mild concussion playing sports at school. Prayers for Mary Ernst Swanson and family. Her mom passed away. Do you have a prayer concern? Please let us know! The Boiler Fund continues. If you would like to donate, please designate your donation separately from your regular offering. Total cost was $12, Donations to date total $4, Thanks to all who have given! Congratulations John Sauers large water color, Turbulence Over Berkley Road was chosen to be part of the Annual National Juried Exhibit at the Art Alliance Gallery in Oxford, PA. Of the 348 entries submitted, only 43 were chosen by the Juror. What a wonderful achievement Congrats John! Blessing of the Animals - PCHdG October 14, :30pm Under the shade tree in the front yard. The money is used to purchase cards and stamps for mailings to members and friends of the congregation. George Deibel Miles of Pennies Chairman **************************************************** We have many volunteers at the church who help maintain the building and grounds on a regular basis. They are our unsung heroes who don t receive much attention and thanks for all their hard work. Pictured here is Faith Andreen who was helping her Dad with grass detail on this particular day. Special thanks to all who contribute their time and skills to keep our church and grounds looking great! 5

I am at Peace I do not understand many things, but I do not have to, as my God does. I may not always forgive myself for not being perfect, but my God does. I do not know what tomorrow may bring for me, but my God does. I will never have the power to protect my loved ones from all the evil present in the world today, but my God does. 6
