Presbyterian Connection May 2016 Volume 23 Issue 5 ARE YOU DEAD OR ALIVE? You would have a hard time answering that question if you were dead. Of course, most of us probably have heard of the TV program The Walking Dead (I have never watched it during what I have read is in its 6 th season). I m sure most of us have used the phrase I m dead on my feet in reference to our being extremely tired. What triggered all of this is a quote I had jotted down in my pocket notebook last July. It is from a devotional by Scott Walker in Daily Guideposts, June 17, A friend of mine told me that when life quits changing and fear is conquered, there is a good chance you are dead. Golden Opportunity Days has become an annual celebration for our church where we COME ALIVE. We get excited about being the church that we are for the Lord and begin looking for ways and activities that bring renewed and enhanced excitement into our fellowship. May 1-8 is this year s launching out into a week of excitement and spiritual experience that will help undergird the year ahead. Our Deacons have made this an annual project of theirs for close to 20 years now. Let s get on board this spiritual, fun, and excitement train and ride it into the future. To make this happen we have to be sure we are standing on the promises and not just sitting on the premises. It is another opportunity for an Exciting adventure into the future of our church. Put a song in your heart and on your lips. Start singing The Gospel Train. The gospel train is coming, I hear it just at hand, I hear the car wheels moving, And rumbling thro' the land. Get on board, children, Get on board, children, Get on board, children, For there's room for many a more. God Bless! Fred 1

LIBRARY LINES - MAY 2016 We have two new fiction series: Life of Christ Series by Anne Rice; 1- CHRIST THE LORD 2- THE ROAD TO CANA. The other series is an Amish series: Wells Landing Series by Amy Lillard: 1- CAROLINE S SECRET, 2- COURTING EMILY, 3- LORIE S HEART, 4- JUST PLAIN SADIE. A fiction DVD was donated to the library: WAR ROOM. From the creators of FIREPROOF AND COURAGEOUS, comes WAR ROOM, a compelling faith drama filled with humor and heart that became the #1 movie in US theaters and received raving reviews from audiences of all ages. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all great jobs, a beautiful daughter, and their dream house, but appearances can be deceiving. Their world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success and flirts with temptation, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clare, and is challenged to establish a war room and a battle plan of prayer for her family. As Elizabeth tries to fight for her family, Tony s hidden struggles come to light. Tony must decide if he will make amends with his family and prove Miss Clara s wisdom that victories don t come by accident. The featured book is CAROLINE S SECRET: In Amy Lillard's poignant introduction to Wells Landing, a small Amish community is home to two brave souls hoping to forget their painful pasts and rebuild their faith in the future... Caroline Hostetler arrived in Oklahoma determined to forge a new life for herself and her daughter, Emma. As a single mother, she values the warmth and safety she's found in close-knit Wells Landing. She's even caught the eye of a handsome newcomer--a man who just may be the partner she longs for and the father Emma deserves. But the arrival of an Englisher threatens to lay bare the secrets she's worked so hard to leave behind.. After losing his life-long sweetheart, Andrew Fitch moved to Wells Landing to work in his uncle's furniture business and nurse his broken heart. Finding love again seems all but impossible--until he meets Caroline and Emma. But his plans to join their lives together may be shattered when the truth of Caroline's past comes to light--unless, together, they can learn the true meaning of sacrifice and forgiveness... Faye Brackett, Librarian 5

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & MEN General Meeting of PW&M April 12, 2016 at Hank and Katie's Cafe Thirteen members met for breakfast at the cafe then opted to hold the meeting in our own Memorial Hall due to the noisy atmosphere at the cafe. Eleven of our members resumed the meeting at the hall and Moderator, Steve Broskovak opened in prayer and brought the meeting to order at approximately 10:30 AM. Greeters for the meeting were Irene Bere and Bill Kerr. Norma Taylor had shared her devotion with us before breakfast re: Christ's teachings about God's view on taxes. REPORTS: Secretary, Amy Johnson asked if there were any corrections or additions to the minutes of the last general meeting in March. There were none so the minutes were accepted as printed and will be placed on file and on the PW&M bulletin board. She read a card from former member, Mary Lou Guthrie. Treasurer, Mary Kerr presented her report for March. It shows a beginning balance of $1,249.01, with total receipts of $84 and no disbursements to leave an ending balance on March 31 of $ The report was accepted as presented and will be placed on file and on the bulletin board. Publicity, Vicky Bair was not present for the business meeting. Missions: Linda Allensworth presented her report on label-collecting and is ready to send in 1000 more Best Choice labels soon. Linda made a motion that PW&M host the No Bake Bake Sale fundraiser again. Elaine seconded the motion. Discussion showed that all approve of this easy way to allow all our congregation to donate to our good causes. The vote was unanimous. Amy Johnson made a motion to begin the publicity for the Bake Sale immediately if the church secretary can get it into the May Connection by the April 15 deadline. Linda seconded the motion. Discussion included a poem written years ago for the same fundraiser to be used again this year. All were in favor. The fundraiser will be advertised from April 24 through June 5. All donations will be collected by Mary Kerr. Announcements: Pastor Fred Taylor will post a notice in our Connection of who to make comments and suggestions to re: the workings and duties in the church and will list those specific names as himself or the elder in charge of the situation in question. Also he reminds us of G.O.D. Coming up the first week of May. This is sponsored by our deacons. The Taylors will be away the week including Sunday, April 24 and Gary Adler will stand in for him in the pulpit that Sunday. OLD BUSINESS: Ice Cream Social, July 16 will be co-chaired by Linda and Celia Millard. Missions chair, Linda presented all the members with a list (attached here) of the proposed ministries that the team approved for our funds to support for 2016 and the dollar amount suggested. She then made a motion that this recommendation be accepted by the PW&M membership. Amy seconded the motion. All were in favor. The coordinating team approved for 3 of the ministries to receive donations immediately upon passing because we have the funds in our bank account now. Those three are Vera Lloyd Home- $100; Flippin Schools Lunch Program-$200; Flippin Schools Back Pack Program-$200. NEW BUSINESS: New place for PW&M meeting After discussion and the results of this morning's experience at the cafe where we were unable to carry out a reasonable meeting in such a noisy public place, a motion was made by Elaine Miller to meet at our church's Memorial Hall for the May and June meetings with sign-ups for volunteers for coffee and food of choice at each meeting. Linda seconded the motion and all were in favor. This will be tried at least until the summer break, then re-evaluated. It was agreed that greeters would not be needed for these two meetings. Today Teri Morrow and Elaine Miller volunteered to provide refreshments for the May 10 meeting. A suggestion was that the former tip money could be donated to the dishes that we collect for. OTHER BUSINESS: Next general meeting May 10, 2016 at Memorial Hall at 9:30 AM with Elaine Miller giving devotion. Steve adjourned the meeting at 11:25 AM with Fred closing in prayer. Respectfully submitted by Secretary, Amy Johnson 7

Till We Speak Again I often wonder how people see me, aside from beautiful grandma that is. I m talking of how does my Christianity show? Do I look like an angel with a halo or a demon with horns? A very wise and talented woman, Dolly Parton, wrote a song called Halos and Horns. If you ve never heard it, you really should. I ve never heard a more clearly, straight to the heart account of our daily struggle with sin and temptation. It starts with the chorus: Halos and Horns, Sinner and Saints Hearts that are torn between what s wrong and ain t Just because it feels right, does not make it so So we struggle through life with horns and halos. She then goes on to a couple of short verses to describe how we ask God to forgive us for all of our sings so we can take off our horns and wear our halos again. Our world has changed and progressed. The kinder, gentler times have passed and life is now, much more complicated and isolated. You would think it would be the other way around. We have all the gadgets to make life easier and faster, so we d have more time. More time for what?? God, maybe?? Ha! The last verse really describes Christians in the world today, at least that s the picture it paints for me. It may paint a different one for you. That s the good thing about music, it speaks to each of us differently. She says: Halos and Horns, Sinners and Saints We re praised or we re scorned We either run or we faint Life is a challenge from the day we are born Just trying to balance Halos and Horns. It s Heaven or Hell, and it s Halos and Horns I try to keep my halo polished, but I m afraid no one can see it in the top of my closet. Hum.something I need to work on, I guess. Thought For the Day: Halos make a better choice for a fashion accessory than horns, especially in Heaven. Luv, Millie 10

RECIPE FOR MAY Zucchini Lasagna Skinnytaste.com Servings: 8 Serving Size: 1/8 Points +: 9 pts Smart Points: 9 Calories: 345 Fat: 17 g Carbs: 16 g Fiber: 2 g Protein: 36 g Sugar: 8 g Sodium: 801 (without salt) Ingredients: 1 lb 93% lean ground beef 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 tsp olive oil 1/2 large onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (28 oz can) crushed tomatoes 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil black pepper, to taste 3 medium (8 ounces each) zucchini, sliced 1/8" thick 1 1/2 cups part-skim ricotta cheese 1/4 cup Parmigiano Reggiano (or Parmesan cheese) 1 large egg 16 oz (4 cups) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese Directions: In a medium sauce pan, brown meat and season with salt. When cooked drain in colander to remove any fat. Add olive oil to the pan and saute garlic and onions about 2 minutes. Return the meat to the pan, add tomatoes, basil, salt and pepper. Simmer on low for at least minutes, covered. Do not add extra water, the sauce should be thick. Meanwhile, slice zucchini into 1/8" thick slices, add lightly salt and set aside or 10 minutes. Zucchini has a lot of water when cooked, salting it takes out a lot of moisture. After 10 minutes, blot excess moisture with a paper towel. Preheat a gas grill to medium high, and grill 2 to 3 minutes per side, until slightly browned. Place on paper towels to soak any excess moisture. Preheat oven to 375. In a medium bowl mix ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese and egg. Stir well. In a 9x12 casserole spread 1/2 cup of sauce on the bottom and layer the zucchini to cover. Spread 1/2 cup of the ricotta cheese mixture, then top with 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese and repeat the process until all your ingredients are used up. The last layer top with remaining zucchini and sauce, cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Uncover the foil and bake 20 minutes (to dry up the sauce) then place the remaining 1 cup mozzarella and bake until melted, 10 minutes. Let stand about 5-10 minutes before serving. 12
