3 We are now in what has been called "the dog days of summer." The hot weather has drug on and on. Nat King Cole sang about "the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer." We are all looking forward to a change in the weather. Soon there will be a change in the monthly schedule. School and church committee meetings aren't very far away. In the meantime there will be vacations, county fairs and various kinds of fund raising events. A rummage sale was held by the Mother's Club of Seattle's Lakeside School in the summer of These caring parents spent many hours on this sale with the faith to buy a computer for the students. The sale made about $3,000. A seventh grader, Bill Gates, played around on the computer, and through hard work made himself into a programmer. Before finishing high school he had started his own business, which today is the world's biggest software company. It all happened because some mothers had faith that something good would happen from their efforts. Let us always believe that something good will always come from our efforts. Rev. Lee Wiersma DAY LITES MEETING NITE LITES MEETING Joint Meeting August 18th- 9am Hostess: Midge Casselman Helping Hands Food Family Worship Center Harvester s Drive-Thru is Friday, Aug. 17th 9:00 am. 4 The Harts We ve been around for a while, but we will tell you about us again! We moved to Wellsville in 1977 from Kansas City, MO. We live three miles south of Wellsville on Reno Road. We became members of the church in Gary is one of the Trustees. Sharon is a member of the Mission Committee. We are both on the Float Committee. We have one daughter and two grandchildren. Eryn is 14 (just got her driving permit yikes!). Lucas is almost 12. They live in Olathe. We spend a lot of time filling in for mom and dad, taking them to practices, appointments, etc. They are both active in sports, so we attend games on a regular basis. Sometimes we miss church because of an important game. (It s just not right to have these sports activities on Sunday morning.) We seem to be very busy these days, having gotten involved in political activities in the past few years, campaigning for certain candidates in election years. Sharon is a CASA volunteer, so that takes up some of her time. Gary is always building something, or some such thing. He has three old vehicles in his shop to restore but has never found time to get it done. Gary spent his last 30 years before retirement with the Postal Service in the IT area. Sharon was a legal secretary for the same law firm for 42 years. After we moved to Wellsville in 1977, we commuted to Kansas City for our work. Gary s big passion in life was probably flying. That was our reason for moving to Wellsville from the city. We bought land where he could have his own airstrip. He quit flying a few years ago. Sharon loves things like hiking, traveling, bicycling, all the things she is about too old to do now! We love the Methodist Church and all the people here. Gary and Sharon Hart
5 We are well on our way to raising enough money to buy an ARK at Heifer International. You may be wondering what is an ARK? What is Heifer International? Well first of all Heifer International helps people around the world. They provide Animals, Trees, Honeybees, Fish, Irrigation Pumps and training to empower people around the world to take care of their families and be self-reliant. They will be able to put food on the table and earn income for clean water, medicine, schools, and safer homes. Their teach a man to fish philosophy is helping families in more than 25 countries including the United States. The Ark is a bundle of animals two by two just like in Noah s Ark. It includes 2 cows, 2 sheep, 2 oxen, 2 water buffalo, 2 pigs, 2 goats, 2 lamas, 2 trios of rabbits, 2 beehives, 2 flocks of geese, 2 trios of ducks, 2 flocks of chicks, 2 trios of guinea pigs, 2 schools of fish, and a community animal vet kit. The Ark cost $5,000. Families will use them for work, to provide food, and to sell. This gift will improve the lives of families for generations by multiplying and passing on the gift. ARE WE UP FOR A CHALLENGE? A very generous person is willing to match what we can raise by the end of the year. We have raised $2, so far towards our goal of $5,000, only $2, more to go. All we need to raise by the end of the year is $1, That is only a month or a week. Challenge accepted! This will be a great way to end our year with a bang. With your help all things are possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the mission committee members. Thank you and God Bless you! Mission Committee Page 5 **A U GUS T **
6 WELLSVILLE A local church found a way to reach out and minister to others in need. Wellsville United Methodist Church, 302 S. Locust St., Wellsville, built a small box at the back of the church and filled it with non-perishable food items. The idea is similar to the community library boxes full of books, but with a twist, church officials said. The church named it the Blessing Box. People in need may freely take items from the box at anytime, church officials said. People run out of food, Cindy Mills, a member of the church s mission committee, said. It is a way to help people all the time if they run short. We wanted to help people in our community. Mills said church members heard about other groups setting up a Blessing Box and decided to start one in Wellsville. The church opened its Blessing Box right after Christmas, she said. It has been a big blessing [for us], Mills said. We feel like there is a need. When we see there is food gone, we know we helped another person. It has gone pretty good. A lot of people don t know it is there. Church officials said the Blessing Box is not meant to replace food pantries, but to enhance them, especially if somebody runs out of something that is normally in their cupboard. Mills said the box was put in the back of the church away from public view so those in need may pick up items in a more private setting. People are too proud to ask for help, Mills said. They don t want to admit they are struggling. They can just pull in and grab something to go. Mills said at present with the hot temperatures the box contains dry food, rice, sealed individual packages of cereals and other things people can add water to such as macaroni and cheese. We check it every day, Mills said. We have more food coming in than going out. Mills said things such as personal care items, canned goods and blankets have appeared in the box. She said those type of items and more are available inside the church, which is open from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Church officials said the box is always stocked and encourage people to use it. For more information, contact the church at (785) (Written by Greg Mast at the Ottawa Herald)
