3 Happy June! Summertime brings the smell of freshly mown grass, the sounds of kids playing outdoors, hummingbirds at the feeder. Summertime is a feast for all the senses. Can you tell I love it? What else does summer bring? Vacation Bible School! Kandi and family have already been hard at work preparing. This year is Cave Quest and will run from July I was blown away by the whole experience here last year. It was so much fun! Please put it on your calendar and invite your neighborhood kids. VBS is one of the greatest outreach tools a church has. And if Kandi asks for your help do it! The rewards far outweigh the time and energy you put into it! Summertime also means vacation time. If you re going to miss a Sunday remember that you have another option for your weekly worship. Each Wednesday evening at 7 pm you re invited to Wellsville UMC for a different sort of worship (but it still counts as worship). We open with songs and then move into a time of prayer. After prayer I read some scripture and share a short message followed up with Holy Communion. It is an intimate worship experience. Oh and even if you ll be there Sunday you re still welcome, encouraged even, to join us! And the reality is that summertime brings a dip in our giving. At Wellsville we now offer e-giving. It s simple and helps you keep your pledge even if you miss worship. There is a link on the website which can be found at Otherwise, please remember that even when you go on vacation we still need to make budget. Both churches are participating in transformative committees. Clearfield is working through the ABIDE process and there is a short article by Kim Gilbert elsewhere in the newsletter. Wellsville is working through a visioning process and we hope to come before the church sometime this fall. We covet your prayers as we work through this process. I m writing from Topeka as Annual Conference begins today. Please be in prayer for your Church! These are tumultuous times and as we gather as a conference your prayers will help bolster us as we make decisions that will, hopefully, glorify God! Enjoy these warmer days! And I ll see you Sunday, Pastor Kathy I think knowing what you cannot do is more important than knowing what you can. Lucille Ball CONTINUED PRAYERS Each week we have a list of prayer requests in our bulletin. We thought that maybe we could open this up to anyone who gets the newsletter. Let s give it a try. These are church members and their immediate families: Jordan Brunk Bill Casselman Charles Cook Gayle Cook Susan Saner Davenport Bea Hughes Susan Key Keith McIlwain Gary Milroy JW & Dorothy Tomlinson And our members at the Wellsville Retirement Community: Ollidean Bradbury Bernadine Broers Louise Burgoon Louise Clayton Letha Lytle Peggie Pottorff Sarah Sturm Dorothy Tomlinson Renate Watts

4 STEPHEN MINISTRY I recently watched the movie Still Alice. This Academy Award-winning film tells the story of Alice, a 50- something college professor who is diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer's. In a short, poignant scene toward the middle of the film, Alice's daughter Lydia asks about her experience with Alzheimer's: Alice tells her daughter: "Well, it's not always the same. I have good days and bad days, and on my good days I can, you know, almost pass for a normal person. But on my bad days, I feel like I can't find myself.... I can see the words hanging in front of me and I can't reach them and I don't know who I am. And I don't know what I'm going to lose next." After a moment, Lydia replies with just two words: "Sounds horrible." Alice smiles a little and says, "Thanks for asking." The words "Sounds horrible" might not sound caring, but actually they convey tremendous empathy and compassion. All too often, when someone shares painful feelings, we're so anxious to help the person feel better that we downplay that pain. Lydia could have done that, saying something like: "Try to focus on the good days, not the bad." "There could be a medical breakthrough at any time." "You need to stay positive!" Instead, Lydia validates and shares in her mother's feelings which was just what Alice needed right then. So the next time someone shares about a painful situation, something like "Sounds horrible" might be just the right thing to say. In Christ, Joel Bretscher Please call Beth Watson at , Kathy Symes at , Ruth Fleming at , or Wellsville UMC for a consultation. COMMISSIONING OF PASTOR KATHY AS A STEPHEN LEADER WILL TAKE PLACE SUNDAY, JUNE 26. THIS IS A TOBACCO- FREE, FIREARM-FREE, AL- COHOL-FREE, DRUG- FREE CAMPUS. TRUSTEE IDEA BOX In the Westover Room there is a box for any ideas you may have for the Trustees to consider. All we ask is that you use your name and phone number so we may get back to you. We value your input - but this is YOUR church! If you see something that needs to be done and you can do it, please do! For a more serious project but you would like to do it, please see a Trustee first. Thank you to all who have been doing this already. Keep sending your current addresses. Please contact the office. umcwellsville@embarqmail.com

5 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL VBS is set for July 11th thru the 15th. VBS is an important outreach of our Christian education program here at WUMC. Last year we reached over 75 young people. It's almost harder to know who has the most fun, the kids or us adults putting it on. On that note, I would like to ask for your help to host another successful VBS. We have many places we can use you, with the preschoolers, in the kitchen, setting up, decorating, being a crew leader for a group of 5 kids or even leading a station. I know we are all busy people, but I just ask for you to consider if you can help 1 day, all week, or before to set up or after to tear down. We have had so many fun, successful VBS adventures here with all kinds of different themes. This year we are going on a cave quest, where we are following Jesus, the light of the world! I am interested in borrowing any old spelunking gear one might have, although I know that might be a reach. If you have any questions or would like to help, please feel free to call or text me. Thank you to all who help support VBS in any way, I truly have the best church family ever, and I couldn't do it without you. Kandy Kline UNOFFCIAL CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES May Meeting Finance Reviewed the financial reports. The giving is ok, but we need to continue to increase the giving. Pay back Emergency fund as money is available. The audit has begun. Trustees $12,000 for parsonage basement repair and egress window. Walter Key asked for permission to talk to the congregation to pay for this. If the congregation does not come up with enough, Walter wants permission to use some of the emergency fund as necessary. They want to start in June. Kos moved that we make the emergency fund available to begin this project and continue to raise money. Linda Palmer seconded it. Motion carried. Bell tower, chimney, porch and south entrance all leaked. Bids received for these leaks. PPR They appreciate Kathy s dedication. They approved custodian s job description. Stephen Ministries Pastor Kathy has started a class on the 1 st & 3 rd Tuesdays at 6:30 pm for 3 months. Ministering to Inactive Members. It is open to anyone.
