1 A L P H A P H I A L P H A Monthly Newsletter Editor: Jason Clark October 2012 President s Message A voteless people is a hopeless people Alpha program. During our childhood, my brother and I visited our grandparents on an equitable basis to avoid any complaints of favoritism exactly half of every summer vacation with my maternal grandmother in Tennessee and my paternal grandparents in Alabama. In Alabama I recall the gubernatorial election in The incumbent, John Patterson, defeated a challenger named George Wallace. Wallace later stated that he lost because he was outniggered and vowed to not let that happen again. Wallace won the next election and you know the rest. Alabama was one of many states in America that only allowed Negroes to vote if they could pass literacy tests, e.g. how many bubbles are in a bar of soap? Poll taxes, identification cards and intimidation also discouraged voting by blacks. In this setting, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. developed a program to encourage minorities to take advantage of their Constitutional right to participate in the electoral process. It is called A Voteless People is a Hopeless People. Ever since the fraternity has sponsored voter education and registration projects throughout the country. Mu Lambda has actively participated in those projects in the past and this year is no exception. With the passage of laws requiring voters to obtain state-sponsored ID cards in Pennsylvania and other states, our efforts have become more urgent than ever. Last weekend the ERVP, Brother Sean McCaskill, held an Eastern Region staff meeting at Hampton, Virginia. Among other things, it was reported that for the current election Alpha Phi Alpha is participating in a complimentary effort First of All, We Vote. The goal is for each alumni chapter to register a minimum of 150 voters and college chapters to register 100 voters. Collaborating with other Greek-letter organizations, NAACP, National Urban League, etc. millions of new voters are expected to cast their ballots next month. There are also voter education sessions, town hall meetings, telephone bank canvassing, transportation to the polls, etc. Groups are asked to call on the day of the election persons they registered and find out if they actually voted. Brother Khama Sharp and his community service committee have planned voter registration activities for this month and will need your assistance. Join them on the dates listed in the calendar of activities. It is imperative, now more than ever, that we add our strength to the efforts of others to ensure that all eligible persons participate in this most important election. Too many activities have occurred that remind me of the intimidation tactics sanctioned by controlling officials last century. Statesponsored identification cards and other requirements are similar to the Alabama of my childhood and we do not want to return to those less-than thrilling days of yesteryear. Alpha does not stand for any backward steps! In fact the only direction to go is Forward! Alpha Phi Alpha, Mu Lambda Chapter , Washington, D.C. 1
