1 90th Annual Laymen s Session National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. 133 rd Annual Session Charlotte, NC September 2 6, 2013 REPORT Monday, September 2, 2013 The Laymen Wives & Women Supporters Ministry held their annual planning meeting for the Annual Prayer Breakfast and other projects at the Hilton Center City Hotel at 5:00 p.m. President Harold Simmons held his annual Pre-Convention meeting with the officers and ministry leaders at 5:00 p.m. at the Hilton Center City Hotel. The agenda for the meeting was: Prayer & Praise Period Greetings by Deacon Richmond Turner, president of the North Carolina Laymen s League Registration Process and Procedures Programming For The Week Meeting locations and logistics Education Ministry - Seminars Evangelistic Ministries for the week Young Adult Mentoring Ministry Fellowship & Social Ministry Recommendations Tuesday, Morning September 3, 2013 The 23 rd Annual Melinda J. Cade Laymen Wives & Women Supporters Prayer Breakfast was held at 8:00 a.m. at the Charlotte Convention Center. The theme was, Solidarity with the Savior, Biblical Women in Solidarity with the Savior, Watching and Warning Through the Word. This was the first for new appointed General Chairwoman Eve Ridgeway, Detroit, MI, to preside over the prayer session. Sister Mary Reeves, Washington was the keynote speaker. The program included: Worship & Praise Service Worship Leaders Opening Scripture Greetings Purpose Selection Announcements Special Presentations Bahamas United Women Praise Team Brother Jimmie and Sister Rosie Maxwell, MS Brother Stephen and Lynn Perry, NY Brother Anthony Hagans, 3 rd VP NC Laymen Sister Angie Gray, KS Bahamas United Women Praise Team Sister Thelma Miller Sister Eve Ridgeway

Reeves, WA Sister Sandra Jones, MO Mrs. Mary Reeves, WA Brother Albert and Sister Theresa Byrd, MO Tuesday, Afternoon September 3, 2013 The Official Opening of the laymen s 90th Annual Session convened at 1:30 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Charlotte Convention Center. Following the Praise and Worship period, the Fellowship and Social Ministry and the President s Advisory Council gave their report. The United Women s Choir from Nassau Bahamas, rendered music selections prior to the keynote opening message. Dr. Sedric D. Veal, Sr., pastor of the Temple Baptist Church of Cleveland, OH delivered the morning message. The title of his message was, After the Pain. I Pet. 5: Following the message the laymen s Education Ministry conducted their annual Study Institute at 3:15 p.m. The seminars were: Deacons Ministry Luther Lewis Prison Ministry Emerson Turner The Man Project Rev. Rogers Jackson Christian Women: Am I My Sister s Keeper? Serving Inside the Sandbox Joice Tinsley Betty Christian Men Teaching Boys I.V. Reeves How to Begin an Adopt-A-School Ministry Charles Ewing, Robert Pope, Will Noble Marriage Enrichment Stephen & Lynn Perry State Presidents Class The National Laymen Street Evangelistic team went witnessing to work and prepare for the week s witnessing activities.

3 Wednesday, Morning September 4, 2013 The morning session opened at 8:00 a.m. with a Prayer and Praise Service. Reports were given by the Worship; Education, Adopt-A-School ministries and Wives and Women Supporters ministries. Dr. Randy Vaughn, Director of Disaster Management came and thanked President Simmons and the laymen for their assistance in disaster activities since last September. Dr. Vaughn also came to recruit skilled workers for Atlantic City, NJ work, who were victims of Super Storm Sandy. Dr. Vaughn introduced Dr. Collins Ways, pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Atlantic City who also reported on the conditions in Atlantic City and he encouraged support from the laymen s department to help people rebuild. Following the reports, the keynote speaker was Dr. Jesse V. Bottoms, pastor of the Beulah Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, NY and Vice President-at-Large of the National Congress of Christian Education for the morning message. His title was Barrels and Blessings, I Kings 17:16. Following the message, the body was dismissed to Study Period No. 2 Wednesday, Afternoon September 4, 2013 The laymen afternoon session called for President Harold Simmons to deliver his 13 th Annual Address. Prayer and Praise Service opened the afternoon session. The recommendations by President Simmons were read and adopted Recommended Ministries 1. Appointment of Junior Laymen officers for President Karrington Toney, MO Vice President-at-Large Charles J. McClure, OH 1 st Vice President Antonio Foster, MO 2 nd Vice President Bryson E. Collier, IL 3 rd Vice President Isaiah Davis, NJ 4 th Vice President Lloyd Martin, III, LA Treasurer Jonathan Woods, AL 2. Congress Class Instructors Syllabus in one booklet (Christian/Woods) 3. Issue Disaster Preparedness Certification for those who have completed the Red Cross Certification classes. 4. Continue to encourage and motivate persons to implement an Adopt-a-School Ministry. 5. Create an outreach to increase the Junior Laymen Ministry 6. Create an outreach to increase the Young Adult Ministry 7. Establish a Care & Communication Ministry 8. Establish an Evangelism Ministry Class in the Community 9. Establish a Mentoring Ministry. 10. Continue the National Baptist Laymen s Auxiliary with a Ministry Driven Focus.

4 Following the adoption of the recommendations, special guests who came to support President Simmons expressed greetings. They were: Brother James McHenry, National Usher s President Dr. Robert Baynham, Immediate Past President of the Missionary Baptist Convention of Kansas Dr. Carrington Pinder, pastor, St. Mark Native Baptist Church, Nassau, Bahamas Rev. Jimmie Banks, president, Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas Dr. George Waddles, Sr., president, National Congress of Christian Education President Simmons delivered his 13 th Annual Address. His theme was, The Voice of a Biblical Man. Acts 4: Thursday, September 5, 2013 The morning session opened at 8:00 a.m. with a Prayer & Praise Service. The Mission Ministry, Wives & Women Supporters and Prison Ministry gave their reports. Following the reports, the annual Memorial Period was observed acknowledging workers and love ones who have passed away since the last annual session. The program was comprised of the following memorial presentations offered: Our Beloved Spouses Jeff Ridgeway, MI Our Cherished Parents Charles Hardrick, OK Selection Dwayne Banks, OH Our Dear Relatives Michael Washington, MI Our Faithful Workers L. C. Mitchell, MS Memorial Prayer Douglas Davis III Selection Dwayne Banks, OH At the conclusion of the Memorial Period, the delegates were dismissed to attend Dr. Julius R. Scruggs 4th annual address. At 6:00 p.m. at the Blake Sheraton Hotel, the annual King contest was held. The top three places were: 1 st Ozell Dickerson, Jacksonville, AL 2 nd Leo Hartfield, Jackson, MS 3 rd Claude Underwood, Jr., Newark, NJ Ozell Dickerson, AL, will serve as the king. At 7:40 p.m. the annual John L. Webb Awards and Recognition Banquet was held at the Blake Sheraton Hotel. Dr. George Waddles, Sr., pastor of the Zion Hill Baptist Church of Chicago, IL and National Congress president was the keynote speaker. The title of his message was Fulfilling the Divine Destiny. During the banquet, the layman-of-the-year award was presented to Michael Washington, MI.

5 Friday, September 6, 2013 The morning session opened with a Prayer and Praise Service. The General Secretary and Evangelistic ministries gave their annual reports. The keynote speaker was Emerson Turner, Mesa, AZ who is the chairman of the laymen s Prison Ministry. Study Period No. 3 was at 9:30 a.m. was a combination of all classes to listen to a Marriage Enrichment presentation by Stephen and Lynn Perry, Buffalo, NY. The laymen reconvened at 11:00 a.m. for the closing session. Dr. D. Edward Chaney, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, Las Vegas, NV delivered the closing message for the session. This week the laymen evangelism activities included: Nightly canvassing and witnessing was done at the Southside Homes, 3400 Griffith Street, Charlotte, NC.
