John 15:17 President s Projects: Preservation Digitizing State and Chapter records The Hermitage Marking graves of 1812 Soldiers buried in Tennessee Advancing Membership State President s Message Dear Tennessee Daughters, There were over 30 U.S. Daughters of 1812 present at the 198th Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans at the Hermitage on January 8. Not all of us made it into the group photo! Hermitage liaison Theresa Deathridge coordinated the arrangements with the Hermitage and arranged for an informal gathering at the Hermitage House Smorgasbord after the event. Pulitzer Prize winner Jon Meacham, author of American Lion, Andrew Jackson in the White House, was the keynote speaker and all enjoyed his comments on Andrew Jackson. It was an honor for Honorary State President Bettie Gustafson and I to place the wreath on the grave of Rachel Donelson Jackson. In addition to Bettie, it was a privilege to have three other Honorary State Presidents present - Joan Hanks, Aline Roberts, and Charlotte Reynolds. The call letter for the 2013 State Council Meeting on March 7 will be sent very soon. Please make sure that your chapter delegates have been selected. Members are reminded that two copies of the form must be sent to the State President for signatures before they are forwarded to the President National who sends them to Hamilton. This is an excellent opportunity to get young people involved and educate them about the history of the War of 1812 as we celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of John Carter Fields is a Junior member of the Elijah Cross II Chapter of Kingsport. He was recently recognized as Player of the Month by Soccer Unlimited. Carter s community service includes volunteering for Second Harvest Food Bank, Crisis Control and Ronald McDonald House. He has also been a repeat volunteer for the Special Olympics, as well as a volunteer basketball coach. His team has raised funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of a team member s mother battling breast cancer. Carter s ancestor is the chapter s namesake and his grandmother, Mary Bowery Carter, was the Organizing President. He is a student at Wingate College. Joan Hanks Bicentennial Rap Honorary State President Joan Hanks has been officially inducted into the Center of Pop Music at Middle Tennessee State University, under the category of State Songs. Her Tennessee Bicentennial Rap is well known to her friends and associates in In 1995 she wrote the poem that became the Bicentennial Rap as a fun and interesting way to teach students and citizens about the history of Tennessee. The poem was adopted by the State Legislature in 1996 as Tennessee s official Bicentennial Rap. Joan has been writing poems since the 1970s and made it a practice to read her work with a beat. She later stated that she was writing rap and didn t know it. To view a video and hear the Bicentennial Rap, visit popmusic.mtsu.edu/homeland/ website. 3 Electronic Imaging Project We are about half way through scanning the old 1812 applications for the Tennessee State President s Project. If anyone would like to help with the Project, let me know so we can plan to meet at one of the meetings to hand over the book of applications to scan. Chairman Debra M. Wilson Attention State Chairmen and State Officers All award cards for Tennessee Society United Daughters of 1812 are due to Nancy Carr by February 20, If for any reason, your award cards will not be mailed by February 20th, please let me know. No awards will be accepted late since a list of all awards will be compiled and Nancy Carr must have time to enter all these awards on the computer. Remember Nancy Carr needs a list of awards that each state officer and state chairman awards by so that I can cut and paste all awards into the master list. Please include the following: Name of the State Committee Name of State Chairman of the Committee or State Officer Name of the award Name of the chapter that received the award Please list the winners in order if you give first, second and third place winners Repeat for more than one kind of award The Awards Night at the State Conference on March 7, 2013, has been changed. Nancy Carr is going to prepare a list of all the awards for each chapter. The combined lists for all chapters will be copied and placed in all chapter award envelops for everyone to see all the awards presented. We are only going to highlight special activities and awards of each chapter at the Awards Night Program. The program will be shorter in length since all awards will not be read. Nancy Carr, Fourth Vice President Pages for National Associate Council Dear Ladies, Our wonderful 1812 National Event in Washington D.C. is quickly approaching (April 4-7, 2013). This year I have been asked to head-up the Page Committee, and needless to say, I am on the hunt. I am Karen Rowland, from the Alexander McComb Chapter in Michigan. Some of you may know my wonderful cousin, Leslie Reynolds. Would you be so kind to survey and advise me of any of your member planning to attend the April event, along with their s? I need a number of page volunteers to make 2013 a success. I would be most appreciative of your efforts. If you have any additional suggestions for page prospects, please let me know. 4 The Hermitage The Tennessee Society U.S. Daughters of 1812 gathered at The Hemitage on January 8, for the 198 th Anniversary of the Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans. A Wreath-laying Ceremony was held at the tomb of President Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel Donelson Jackson. PICTURED Below: Tennessee State Society President Charlotte Miller gave greetings from the U.S.D. of Right: Jon Meacham, keynote speaker, was interviewed by local TV stations after the program. A highlight was a keynote address by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham, who described Jackson as the most important and, I think, least-known figure from the middle of our history. He said Jackson was the pivotal political figure between Jefferson and Lincoln. Meacham spent countless hours at the Andrew Jackson Home, The Hermitage, while researching his book American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House. He said the best way to get to know Jackson is to visit The Hermitage. 5 Crockett s Forge Seat Chapter Natchez Trace Parkway The Crockett Forge Seat Chapter held the Fall meeting on September 20 at The Factory at Franklin. Peggy Jackson McLain of West Point and Jan Eagan of Franklin were welcomed and inducted into the Chapter by President Colleen Spears. This photo was taken at dusk, but the new sign marking the War of 1812 Memorial Site on the Natchez Trace Parkway at has been placed just south of Leiper s Fork. This is where the monument was dedicated last June on the knoll above the rock wall to the right. Thomas Ogle Chapter At the August meeting members of the Thomas Ogle Chapter had an old-fashion Quilt Turning with each member bringing a quilt. 6 General Henry Knox Chapter The General Henry Knox Chapter held the November meeting at Sullivans at Franklin Square in Knoxville. Speaker Mr. Ron Jones was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his historical presentation. Pictured (Above L-R): President Shirley Hall, Ron Jones, and Vice President Shirley Rouse. Members of the General Henry Knox Chapter welcomed and introduced three new members at the November meeting. This makes a total of twelve new members for Pictured (Above L-R): Registrar Debra Wilson, Sandra Miles, Elizabeth Loveday, Myrtle James, and President Shirley Hall.
