1 Founded February 2011 Dear Members and Friends, The year of the has been a busy one of growth and achievement for the Society Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon We began the year with a successful Annual Meeting and Luncheon at The Army and Navy Club in Washington, DC on April 14. There we elected our Executive Council comprised of the Officers and Patroons for the next two-year period of My heartfelt thanks to our Dominie, Melissa Harrison Fischer, and Vice President, Marlene Rathbun Wilkinson, for our tribute ceremony to our late past President, the Rev. Dr. Dixon A. Barr. I know that Dixon would have been pleased not only for the attendance at the luncheon, but also at the humor injected into the event honoring his spirit. Society Directory Our loyal Member, Fay Carpentier-Ford, and her husband Jerry released for the Annual Meeting and Luncheon an updated Directory for the Society. Everyone will have to agree that Fay and Jerry have created a beautiful membership resource for our Society. I want to extend my special thanks to them for their wonderful contribution. Membership Growth Membership growth in our Society has continued. There are many to thank for this fact but special accolades go to our Genealogist, Karen McClendon, for her promoting membership in the Society and speedily and accurately verifying the ancestry of applicants. Also, while our former Genealogist, Marlene Rathbun Wilkinson, became our Vice President, she did not lose her passion for encouraging those with Dutch ancestry to make themselves known to the President. Karen and Marlene are truly a dynamic duo. Official Society Flag and Membership in the New York Conference The year brought the creation of our Society s flag by the highly-respected Annin & Co. flagmakers incorporating our historic seal. The flag has been overwhelmingly well-received and was publicly debuted at the 90 th Annual Flag Service on November 14, 2010 at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, sponsored by the New York Conference of Patriotic and Historical Societies to which the now belongs. (See This Evensong at St.

2 Thomas boasted an amazing sea of colorful flags and banners from the full range of historical societies. I was proud to have represented our Society and want to give special thanks to our Member, Chris Nichols, who served as our Society s flag bearer for the event. -2- Official Society Web Site The creation of our Society s new web site by Payson, LLC (See was the next highlight in our year s activities creating an electronic face for our Society. Many notable societies, particularly those with a Dutch emphasis, have placed links to our web site on their sites. This has increased further the visibility of our Society and is helping to bring in new members. The Lewes Historical Society The next development for the Society is one in progress. As we all know from the history of the, our Society was founded by the late Mrs. Harry Clark Boden, IV in conjunction with The Lewes Historical Society in commemoration of the founding of Lewes as Zwaanendael by the Dutch in We have as a special guest for our 2011 Annual Meeting and Luncheon on April 14, 2011, the Executive Director of The Lewes Historical Society, Mr. Michael DiPaolo, who will speak on the founding and early years of Zwaanendael/Lewes. Mr. DiPaolo and I hope that his participation will help reunite in spirit and cooperation our two societies. Mr. DiPaolo is already looking forward to a future meeting of our Society being held in Lewes! History Books of the Society Our Historian, Patricia Porter Kryder, undertook a task that our late President Dixon Barr encouraged: the creation of history binders of the Society in order to preserve Society documents, photos, and other Society memorabilia. Patricia will be showing her compilations at our April event. April 13, 2011 Annual Meeting and Luncheon I encourage all Members and their Guests to attend the Annual Meeting and Luncheon which begins at Noon on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in the John Paul Jones Room of the Army and Navy Club, Farragut Square, Washington, DC. There will be an election for three new Patroons to serve on the Executive Council of the Society. The reservation form is attached. A Society of Societies In closing I want to note a fact that is not lost on any of us. The is a Society of Societies. Our membership reflects those people who are active in many other historic, patriotic, and hereditary societies. I also note that many of you also have achieved leadership roles in those societies, including Presidents General of those groups, as evidenced by the large number of our members who also are members of The National Gavel Society. We should be proud of this fact and know that this benefits us by enabling us to even better spread the word on membership in the Dutch Colonial Society. Best wishes, Tim Finton Timothy C.
