Burlington-Camden (NJ) Alumni Chapter Chapter Meeting Minutes Saturday, October 14 th, 2017 Rowan University 11:15am Call to Order Polemarch Brother Richard Horton III 1. Formal Opening/Welcome 2. Roll Call 3. Recognition of Dignitaries & Visiting Brothers-the chair recognized in attendance former chapter Polemarch s Reggie White and Ron Thomas. Visiting Brother Abington-Ambler Alumni Keeper of Records Brother David Lopez recognized 11:25 am Polemarch s Report Polemarch Brother Richard Horton III 1. Review Agenda-agenda format change with Social Action committee chair Ryan Harrell moved to the opening committee slot in the meeting so that he can report outside to the chapter voter registration table 2. Polemarch s Update-congratulated Brother Keith Horne and Mask-Off committee members for a successful, well attended event the evening before. Brother Polemarch reiterated that the Strong Arm Chapter and Kappa men are needed in our communities. He stressed that we will continue with the maintenance of our core focus-community, guide right and reclamation. Brother Polemarch informed the body that chapter Board member Nate Ford has resigned as he attained a professional achievement promotion at work. After much work, the chapter administration has concluded and forwarded to IHQ the annual certification requirement, well under the deadline. The use of the communication app Constant Contact has been a worthwhile endeavor in keeping Brothers informed of a host of scheduled events, birthdates, and reminders. Brother Polemarch applauded Vice Polemach Larry McSeed on the production of the newsletter and the interactive format that allows chapter members to click and find the Polemarch s Update, chapter meeting power-point slides, chapter minutes, financial reports and upcoming events. Upcoming events include today s post-meeting tail gate party to include catering by Mission Barbeque, the C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference at TCNJ, and the February 10 th, 2018 BLACKOUT at the 25 Club in Maple Shade. 11:35am Keeper of Records Report-Brother Billy Wright 1. September Minutes approval with no corrections 2. In-coming correspondence A. Thank-you letter received from Carol W. Jones and family for the out pouring of love from the fraternity on the passing to the Chapter Invisible of her husband and Kappa man Charles Jones, James M. Kidd honoree. Brother Polemarch reminded the Brothers that the annual chapter Brother of the Year has been named in honor of Charles B. Brother Dick Williams forwarded a letter presenting his concern with chapter meetings and the issue of handicap access at the Waterfront site in Camden. Brother 1

2 Polemarch addressed the numerous issues with the Waterfront site and after much deliberation by the chapter administration it was decided to hold future meetings at the Kroc Center, 1865 Harrison Ave, Camden, NJ Brother Polemarch stressed that in choosing a meeting site such logistical considerations as AVA availability, food options, parking, and handicap accessibility must be considered. Of the sites considered, the Kroc Center best met all of the concerns. Brother Polemarch requested a motion to hold future meetings at the Kroc Center, motion by Brother Donald Moore, seconded by Brother Derek Scott. Discussion included the privacy of the fraternity rituals, cost ($75 and hour), and the timeliness of scheduled agenda start and adjourn times. Motion passed. 3. Out-going correspondence A. Forwarded paperwork to IHQ recognizing the passing to the Chapter Invisible of Brother Alfred Duke Campbell B. Forwarded updated membership report to IHQ purging 46 inactive Brothers from the roster. Brothers requested to go to IHQ website, log-in and update their personal information Motion to adopt Keeper of Records report by Brother James Foggie, seconded by Brother Vincent Cream. Motion carried 11:50am Keeper of Exchequer Report Brother Polemarch Rich Horton III 1. Brother Polemarch presented the chapter financials in the absence of both the Keeper of Exchequer and Assistant Keeper of Exchequer Motion to adopt the Keeper of Records report by Brother Reggie White, seconded by Brother Ron Thomas. Motion carried 11:55am KCDC Treasurer Report No report 11:55 Committee Reports 1. Social Action- Brother Ryan Harrell A. Last evenings Mask Off event was a successful and good night kicking off our initiatives for the fraternal year B. Voter registration was held October 12 th at Rutgers-Camden University with 23 new voters registered C. Breast Cancer Walk at Cooper River Park scheduled for 7:30am, Sunday, October 22 nd. Brother Nate Ford is the contact point D. Turkey Basket Drive scheduled for Saturday, November 18 at the PYAA Hall, 3501 Elm St, Pennsauken, NJ A reminder of the Brothers role in the success of this event with promises of individual turkey donations and the assistance in the delivery of the baskets. Donations can be made on line through the chapter website E. Cathedral Kitchen scheduled for December 23 rd and January 27th 2. Guide Right Report-Brother James Foggie A. Informational meeting for parents and Kappa League candidates held September 16th 2

3 B. Thirty-seven (37) young men representing three South Jersey counties are enrolled in the Kappa League mentorship program C. First mentor workshop Law and Order and STEM topics will be presented Saturday, October 21 st, 10:00am at the Kroc Center 3. Rutgers-Cam Undergrad Advisor report-brother Kris Smith No Report 4. Reclamation Report-Brother Vincent Cream A. Tail-gate party today after the meeting B. Super-bowl party in February 5. KCDC Report-Brother Erik Burrell A. Proudly proclaimed the numerous community activities that are sponsored to include a scholarship for the Camden Jubilee Ringers Choir, Crimson uniforms for a Bridgeton Little League Baseball team, Judah Elite track & field financial assistance and of course what the KCDC is renowned for, the annual African American Women s Achievement dinner. Thirteen women will be honored at this year s event- Tickets are $55 for Brothers B. Brother Polemarch spoke of the partnership that the chapter maintains with the KCDC. That relationship has been integral in our growth, we have not lost our eye on the prize, we need a place of our own. 6. Founders Day- Brother Erik Burrell A. January 21, 2018, Harrah s Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, NJ. Special room rates available, must be registered for the event to be eligible. Admission fee to The Pool will be 50% off for registered Brothers 7. Pan-Hellenic Report-Brother Larry McSeed presented in the absence of Brother Will Maddox A. Paper shredding event, October 21, Woodcrest Patco station, 8:30am-12 noon (Panhell members will work 10:00am-12 noon) Motion to adopt Committee reports, Motion made by Brother Greg Wilson, seconded by Brother Derek Scott. Motion carries 12:38pm Old Business 1. Church visitation scheduled for November 19 th to White Oak Baptist Church, Holland & Maple in Lindenwold, assemble at 10:45am. The Reverend is the father of 2 nd Vice Polemarch Eric Holmes. Attire is Crimson Blazers, red tie, white shirt, black pants or dark suit. 12:40pm New Business 1. No new business 12:41pm For the Good of Kappa 1. Brother Polemarch presented the monthly History Fact recognizing the 5 th President of Rowan University, Dr. Herman D. James (the building we are meeting in is named after this illustrious Brother). Brother James became the institution s 5 th President in Under his leadership, the college achieved university status and capitalized on a $100 3

4 million gift from Henry and Betty Rowan. to start an Engineering school. Brother James was a graduate of Tuskegee Institute and initiated at the Gamma Epsilon chapter. 2. Brother Polemarch thanked Brothers Eric Holmes, Larry McSeed and Erik Burrell for their assistance in the unsettled location issue for chapter meetings. This team of Brothers quickly came up with a new venue for meetings and relieved his headaches. 3. Brother Larry McSeed recognized the success of Legacy Foundation Executive Director Brother Greg Wilson and the success he attains in everything you do. 4. Brothers applauded the table skirt utilized at the head table 5. Brother Derek Scott, in an effort to not be emotional, applauded the way the chapter handled the meeting site issues. He was touched by the spirit of the Brotherhood and togetherness. He thanked the Polemarch and applauded the direction the chapter is going. 6. Brother Donald Moore reminded the gathered Brothers that the Konclave in Philadelphia is two years away. He attended a breakfast meeting this week with Philly Alumni Brothers and encourages Burl-Cam to get involved in the planning of the Konclave. 7. Brother Vernon Moses informed the body to much applause that he has received a promotion within JP Morgan to Vice President of Commercial Lending and will be relocating to Irvine, CA. 8. Brother Greg Wilson nonchalantly informed the Brothers that his golf outing for the Legacy Foundation raised $123,000!!!!! Brother Wilson offered cigars for those who want to engage. 9.
