There will be tables set up in Coy Hall to display memorabilia of your service or that of your relatives or friends who are serving or who have served. Please bring your memorabilia before the 8:30 am service and, if possible, leave it until after the 11:00 am service so that we can have an opportunity to appreciate your memories. Include a note with each item identifying who, what, when, and where of the item. No guns, knives, hand grenades, or bombs, please. Contact a member of the committee if you have questions: Bob Eatman, ; Gordon Smith, ; Royal Ryser, The United States Armed Forces flags will be on display in Coy Hall to commemorate Veterans Day. You are encouraged to fly your United States flag on November 11. PRIME TIMERS HONOR MILITARY CHAPLAINS AT NOVEMBER LUNCHEON The Prime Timers will join to salute military chaplains on Friday, November 2, at 12:00 pm in Coy Hall. Our chaplains are heroes behind the lines, providing encouragement, guidance, and assistance to service men and women who are often far from their home support networks. Rev. Jed Pancoast, who has served in that capacity, will share some of his experiences with us. Please join us! There is a sign-up sheet at the Ask Me Desk. There will be a planning meeting on Wednesday, October 24, at 10:00 am in East Coy Hall.

2 Times Of Worship SUNDAYS 8:30am Traditional Service 9:45am Praise Worship 11:00am Traditional Service SEPTEMBER 2018 SERMON SERIES X-TREME CHALLENGE Taking it up a notch from the book of Ruth November 4 No Promises Broken November 11 Nobody Left Behind November 18 No Shortcuts November 25 Nobody Left Out THE PASTOR S PEN Greetings friends! Welcome to our November issue of the Profile. As we think about what we are thankful for this month, I have to share that I am thankful for each of you! It is you, as the church, who have built this congregation as a community of warmth and welcome. One of the things that I find exciting is how many visitors and newer attendees comment on how welcome they have been made to feel. That says a lot about what we choose to value as a community of faith. Rather than being polarized by beliefs, we have opted to celebrate our common connections. This is not to say that we don t have differences of opinion, yet we have experienced that even with different political and religious views, we can choose to stand together as a people of faith. You may have heard that a special session of General Conference will be called in February of next year. The Council of Bishops will present three paths on how the church can move from its current stalemate on issues concerning sexual orientation and marriage and ordination. Though Steve and I have discussed holding a Q & A session here at FUMC, we recently learned that Berthoud UMC has invited Rev. Kent Ingram (FUMC of Colorado Springs) to lead a session for churches in our area. Kent Ingram was one of the delegates to General Conference last year and probably knows as much as anybody in Colorado about what will be presented and what it means for the for the church. He will be asked questions like: Which of these paths is best for our churches? Should we prepare for the denomination to split? If so, what will that look like? What might it mean for our local churches? We urge those interested in this discussion to attend November 8 at 6:30 at the Berthoud UMC, 820 9th St, Berthoud. Though this is a controversial topic, I feel that no matter the outcome of the special General Conference session, we have created a culture of welcome and a place for meaningful connections. I am reminded of one of John Wesley s famous quotes, Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May these words continue to guide us as a congregation? It s because of your hospitality, that I believe that FUMC is a generous gift to our community. You don t require creeds or the secret handshake, but you open yourselves up to welcome strangers in our midst, and that is truly the meaning of being the hands and feet of Christ. This Thanksgiving I count each of you as a special blessing to the colorful tapestry of our congregation. We would not be who we are, without each of you. Thank you for being you! Page 2 Blessings, Rev. Jeremiah Rev. Jeremiah Harris

3 FUMC NEWS OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS The Missions Team will be coordinating the spreading of Christmas cheer again this year! If you know of anyone who is part of our church and in need of help with holiday gifts or food, please talk to the Pastors. Angel Tree: This year we will be providing gifts to children through the Prison Fellowship program, and gifts and food baskets to families in the One Community One Family Program. In addition, we ll be making 46 food baskets for seniors at Harvest Pointe. With over 75 gifts needed and approximately 55 food baskets, this is an increase over our giving last year, so we ll need your help to meet these goals! Pick up gift tags on Sundays November 11 (and the 18th if there are any left). Buy, wrap and return your gifts by Sunday December 2. You must SIGN OUT your gift tags, don t grab and run! Donations: With almost 50 food baskets to make, we need financial donations to buy the food and enclose grocery gift cards (to purchase perishables like proteins). Please do give generously, and soon! Last year we had to reduce the amount of the gift cards because the money came in late, so we d like to be better positioned this year! Here s how you can help! PBuy and wrap Angel Tree Gifts (Lobby court November 11 & 18) PDeliver food baskets and gifts on December 8 (sign-up at the Ask Me Desk) PGrocery shopping help (contact Karin Delaney at ) PDonations for the food baskets (Make your check payable to FUMC and write Christmas Baskets in the memo area) UNITED METHODIST STUDENT SUNDAY November 25 is United Methodist Student Sunday. This is one of six Sundays in the year when 12.5 million Methodists in 136 countries are asked to make a donation to support church programs. The offering on this Sunday will go for scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students to help them prepare for life in uniting faith and knowledge. To read more about specific students who have received Gift of Hope Scholarships go to PO/2749. REV. STEVE URGES THE CONGREGATION TO ATTEND PRESENTATION A special session of General Conference will be called in February of next year. The Council of Bishops will present three paths on how the church can move from its current stalemate on issues concerning sexual orientation and marriage and ordination. Though Jeremiah and I have discussed holding a Q & A session here at FUMC, I recently learned that Berthoud UMC has invited Rev. I urge those interested in this discussion to attend this presentation on Thursday, November 8 at 6:30 pm at the Berthoud UMC, 820 9th St, Berthoud. Page 3

4 FUMC NEWS POINSETTIAS AN ANNUAL TRADITION It s almost time to think of decorating the sanctuary for Advent. On Sunday, November 25, December 2 and 9, order forms will be in the worship bulletins for ordering your poinsettias. The poinsettias will be red and in gold foil pot covers. The price of each plant is $ Please complete the order form, make your check payable to FUMC and in the memo section write poinsettias. Place your check with your order form, in the offering plate or hand it to an usher. Extra order forms will be available at the Ask Me Desk, and also in the church office. Circle of Life: Our Volunteers Offer Real Help for Hurting Children Circle of Life, a program started by Bev Goodier, M.A., offers counseling, education and support for children who do not have financial resources or reasonable access after experiencing loss, such as death, divorce, incarceration of a parent, etc. Bev trains competent and dedicated volunteers to teach classes for children who are experiencing such loss. We now have 3 teams for a total of 22 people including 4 youth who volunteer their time for training and leading classes in Thompson Schools, Boys and girls Club, and at FUMC. Each team meets monthly for continued training and support. Research shows that early intervention after a loss can help prevent a host of issues, such as complicated grief, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, suicide, addiction, developmental disruption, etc., that can develop in people (particularly children) who receive no help after a loss. Thanks to these wonderful volunteers who give so much: Lois Ashcraft, Tammy Seib, Judy Davison, Jessica Gartner, Wally Lankford, Kay Neckel, Mary Jordan, Barb Irelan, Cannon Leitz, Lauryn Simon, Shirley Coffman, Marc Messervey, Matthew Utley, Shirley Reed, Kathleen Steindler, Carolyn Bouchard, Brenda Doran, Sue Mullins, Susan Bowling, Mike Burk, Karissa Fidler, and Joy Shaw. Charlie Bouchard and Karen Schneiders serve on our advisory committee. One of our 7-year-old students, whose single mother died last summer, can t wait to come to our class because she says it s the only place where she can talk about her grief. On the first day of our class, she said, I wish I could start my life over because everything has gone so wrong. Last week, she was finally able to draw a picture of her mother to share with us. These classes provide so much support and love when kids need it most. These stories keep us going. We re grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way. Page 4

On Friday, November 9 our wonderful nursery staff will offer a night out from 6:00-9:00 pm. Ages birth through 5th grade are welcome. Please reserve a spot by contacting Alison Williams in the Nursery or sign-up at the Ask Me Desk. WELCOME TO OUR NURSERY STAFF Makayla Kranig Hi, my name is Makayla. I am 21 years old and am a junior at UNC. I am getting my bachelors degree in Human Services, then I will attend nursing school after that. I volunteer in the NICU a few times a week. I am a huge Colorado sports fan, especially the Broncos. My hometown is Parker, Colorado and I have grown up in the Methodist church community and am super excited to be a part of this church! INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH THE ACOLYTES? Have you ever done something you absolutely love and enjoy but realize it s time to move on to something new? That is the place I find myself. For many years I ve worked with our acolytes. It has been a joy each year meeting new kids and having the privilege of working another year with others. However, I find myself at a time when I do need to pull back and let someone else have this wonderful job. It has been a pleasure and blessing to watch the young people grow into adults and get married, begin their careers, studying in college and high school. They will always have a very special place in my heart. If you are interested in taking over this position beginning next Fall, I would welcome you to visit with me, ask questions, etc. It truly is a ministry that will bless you many times over. Please call me at (970) or me at kittnutting@aol.com. Kitty Nutting. Page 6
