Steve Goodier s steveg@fumcloveland.com cell: Rev. Jeremiah Harris revjeremiah@fumcloveland.com cell: Again, our congregation will have the opportunity to share our first world resources with a third world community. A mission trip being planned to Guatemala will be meaningful, respectful, and will build long-term relationships. If you step out of your comfort zone for a week, you will be amazed what can happen. This will be our third trip to Guatemala and each time becomes more and more rewarding. We will again be working with Pura Vida, our trip sponsor, and will share impressions of the trip and plans for a construction trip early 2018 (approximately February 10). Join us on Sunday afternoon June 11 at 1:00pm in West Coy Hall for a question and answer session detailing the trip. For questions prior to the meeting, contact Rob Proctor at (970)

2 Times Of Worship SUNDAYS 8:30am Traditional Service 9:45am Praise Worship 11:00am Traditional Service THE PASTOR S PEN Friends, I enjoy a story about baseball great Joe Garagiola. He once stepped to the plate when his turn came to bat. Before assuming his stance, however, fervent Roman Catholic Joe took his bat and made the sign of the cross in the dirt in front of home plate. Catcher Yogi Berra, also a devout Catholic, walked over and erased Garagiola s cross. Turning to the astonished batter, Berra smiled and said, Let s let God watch this inning. If I were God (and thank goodness I m not), I think I would have wanted to simply watch the inning. Worship Schedule for June, 2017 June 4 - Where Dr. Seuss Got It Right - and we can t afford to get it wrong! June 11 - Where Dr. Seuss Got It Right - and we can t afford to get it wrong! June 18 - Laity Sunday June 25 - Life Is a Journey! I likewise appreciate the story about an old Quaker who stood during the church meeting and told his fellow Friends about a young man who was not a Quaker and who lived an undisciplined life. This young man invited a pious Quaker friend to go sailing one day. A sudden storm came up and the wild young man was drowned. Having made his point, the old Quaker sat down. Silence returned to the meeting until the old man once again arose. This time he said, Friends, for the honor of the truth, I think I ought to add that the Quaker also drowned. And if I were God (and again, thank goodness I m not), I think I would have felt sadness for both losses. Neither was a greater tragedy than the other. I know that religious piety can be a wondrous and beautiful thing. But if I imagine a god so small as to favor those who think like me, worship like me and act like me, then I know very little of life and less of faith. I can t help but think this world would be in better shape if the gods many of us believed in were a little bigger. I want to think of my God as being big enough to love and accept people I have difficulty accepting. I want to think of my God as being big enough to challenge my thinking from time to time. And I want to think of my God as being big enough not to be confined by the barriers humans erect between one another. It s a joy exploring wideness of God s love with this church family! Many blessings, ~ Rev. Steve Rev. Steve Goodier Page 2

BUDGET PERFORMANCE REPORT: FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER S OFFICE Total Income January-April 2017 $256, Total Actual Expenses January April 2017 $206, Total Expense Budget January-April 2017 $216, Full Total for 2017 Budget $649, THANK YOU!! Thank you for the offerings you have made and are making to our church. Your offerings, of your time, of your God-given talents, and of your money, help support all that we do at First United Methodist Church, Loveland. PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY Peace with Justice Sunday, June 11, is one of the six special offerings taken in all United Methodist Churches. This offering is used to change lives in places where the joy of knowing Christ is mixed with the tragedy of violence. United Methodists relate to this special Sunday by seeking peaceful solutions, creating and supporting peacerelated ministries in their conferences and learning about peaceful efforts around the world. Because you give, the following initiatives and hundreds of other ones are possible. Methodists spearhead a peace ministry uniting Arizona border communities. United Methodists in Liberia are being equipped to implement the denominations Social Principles to address socialjustice issues. Pennsylvania students are educating their community about sex-trafficking at home and abroad. Page 3

4 FUMC NEWS FUMC AND LULAC Recently FUMC had the opportunity to serve our community by offering meeting space to LULAC. The LULAC website describes the organization as League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through communitybased programs operating at more than 1,000 LULAC councils nationwide. The organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups. The meetings at the church had speakers, including the Chief of Police and an immigration lawyer, speak to answer questions about citizens and immigrants rights, how to respond if stopped by police or immigration officers, and an immigration lawyer available for individual private consultations. 60 to 80 people attended each meeting. The LULAC organization was very grateful for this meeting space and the kindness shown to them by our FUMC congregation. ~ Courtesy of the Advocates for Justice Committee. VACATION VOLUNTEERS: We re trying something new this summer! Vacation Volunteers will be a once-a-month children s service, learning and celebration opportunity here at the church. We ll put all our Maker skills to work crafting, building, assembling, coloring, and otherwise helping those in our community who need us - from the Truscott garden, to people who need food, to dogs and cats who need enrichment toys, to wild birds who need nests, and much more! Our times together will also include worship, Bible stories, and prayer. Everyone - children, teens, and adults of all ages will have opportunities to join in the fun this summer! Mark your calendar for the Wednesday mornings of June 14, July 12, and August 9 to join us in this new adventure! For more information, talk with a member of the Family Outreach and Events Committee or Ann Kessler or Laura Morgan, Family Ministries staff. Sign up to help on the board in Lobby Court. Family Outreach & Event Committee members are: Alison Williams, Carrie Robinson, Jesse Gartner, Linda Marcinkowski, Sarah Clegern, Susan Williamson, and Tammy Seib. THE NEW VAN IS HERE! The youth of FUMC would like to express our gratitude to everyone that contributed to the fund for the new van. We have taken it to Youth Quest and a CCYM meeting in Denver and love it! It is getting a towing package so it will be ready for our mission trips in a few weeks. We are so thankful for the blessings and support that our church family shows us. Page 4

5 FUMC NEWS WELCOME FLORENCE & EMMANUEL MEFOR Please join us as we welcome Florence and Emmanuel Mefor at our 11:00am worship service on Sunday, June 25. Our church and the Mefors have enjoyed a Covenant Relationship for many years and they will be sharing about some of the medical missionary work they provide in Zimbabwe. The following are brief biographies of Florence and Emmanuel. The Mefor s ministry with the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries in Zimbabwe, Africa has blessed and continues to bless the lives of so many. Florence Ogugua Mefor is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to Mutambara, Zimbabwe, utilizing her skills as a Nurse midwife. God s mission is being carried out as numerous women and children are being cared for and given higher chances of survival. she says. My ministry is to help save lives, improve failing sights, and general well-being of patients, Florence shares. God s hands are at work. Recently patients with severe diarrhea and shock from an area of epidemic were rushed in for treatment. Their survival was miraculous because their recovery was not due to our nursing expertise. A child of seven years had been bit by a snake and it was five days before he got to the hospital. He had a clotting deficiency and was bleeding from every point. God was so merciful as on the fourth day he was up and about. A native of Abatete, Nigeria, Florence became a registered midwife following studies at the School of Midwifery in Awgu, Nigeria. She earned her nursing degree from the School of Nursing in Jos and spent 14 years nursing at the Evangel Hospital in Jos, which is in Nigeria s Plateau State. Florence served at the Chicuque Hospital in Mozambique from , and in her home country with the UMC Rural Health Program from Before her commissioning as a GBGM missionary, she served at Chicuque as a person in mission (PIM) through the GBGM s Global Mission Partners program. Florence is married to Dr. Emmanuel U. Mefor, also a GBGM missionary. They have three children, Chukwuebuka, Osita Jude, and Anulika. Dr. Emmanuel Ufonna Mefor, a medical doctor, is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church currently assigned to Mutambara, Zimbabwe. God s mission is being carried out through my work by the unending stream of patients being cared for physically, spiritually, and psychologically, Emmanuel reflects. God s blessing is on this ministry as he expands its territory, one of which is improving and restoration of failing sights. His healing hands are making the patients well, which brings joy to everyone. To God be the Glory! A native of Kano, Nigeria, Emmanuel earned his medical degree at the University of Maiduguri, College of Medicine in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. In 1997 Dr. Mefor began his service with GBGM as a Person in Mission (PIM) through the Global Mission Partners program. He served as a general practitioner at Chicuque Hospital in Mozambique from , and from he was with the UMC Rural Health Program in his home country. Page 5

6 CHILDREN S MINISTRY SUNDAY SCHOOL We are growing and in need of more Sunday school teachers for next year. If you are interested in teaching we need all ages: preschool, Kindergarten, elementary, middle school, and high school groups. Contact Ann Kessler at akessler@fumcloveland.com or call her at (970) The Family Outreach & Event committee has decided that we will not hold traditional Sunday school during the summer due travel schedules and an opportunity for our teachers to have a rest. We would like to continue some children s activities for this summer. If you would be interested in working with our elementary aged children with the puppets or in a different capacity, please contact Ann Kessler at akessler@fumcloveland.com or call her at (970) YOUTH MINISTRY YOUTH QUEST 2017 Liquid Love This year our middle schoolers were finally able to go to the Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista after being snowed out for the past two years. They had a great time in fellowship and learning about the needs of others regarding food and water. They took workshops to help their faith and had fun singing to the band each day. They really enjoyed the ride to the camp in the new van. Mariah and Charles Diediker went along to help the kitchen crew for the weekend.
