2 Times Of Worship SUNDAYS 8:30am Traditional Service 9:45am Praise Worship 11:00am Traditional Service Worship Schedule for August, 2018 Post-It Notes from God: August 5 - Whether or not you believe it, we are all one. ~ God August 12 - Don t let the sun set on your anger. ~ God August 19 - Mission Sunday August 25 - Remember to give thanks. ~ God THE PASTOR S PEN Dear friends, As most of you know, our denomination (and therefore our church) is in deep discernment about human sexuality and what it means for ordination of LGBTQ persons and same-sex marriage within the church. Over two years ago the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church was asked to help us find a way through disagreements, with the hope of avoiding schism in the church. Our church is global, and bishops and laity from all around the world (the US, Asia, Africa, the Pacific Rim, and Europe -- truly everywhere) have met to offer a proposal for the church to consider. These diverse people have come up with three proposals for General Conference to vote on next February. The proposals are being made public now. But in short, they consist of three different models, each designed to hold the church together through an issue that threatens to divide the church as surely as slavery did over a century and a half ago. For those who are interested, we would like to hold a Q & A session about the proposals soon. I think it is important that we learn all we can so we can be informed. You will eventually be reading in newspapers and watching news stories on TV about The Way Forward, as the Council of Bishops calls it. Some of what you read and hear will be accurate and some not. Our church will do its best to keep you informed and to try to help you understand the larger issues along the way. In the meantime, I ran across a short video by Gil Rendle, whom I have known for a number of years as a credible church consultant. He is an author, a former pastor and a former consultant with the Alban Institute, an educational church leadership organization. His video is entertaining and provocative. It is about the difference between our positions (on any topic) and our interests, or what we are really interested in seeing happen. I invite you to watch it. You can find it on Youtube at: tinyurl.com/y7yg44zy I think it will be seven minutes of your time well-spent. I don t know if our United Methodist Church will stay united these next couple of years. But I do know that God is using our church here in Loveland in meaningful and exciting ways. I am also proud that our church considers it an honor to welcome all persons to First UMC of Loveland, no exceptions. God s grace be with you. Rev. Steve Rev. Steve Goodier Page 2

6 YOUTH MINISTRY SENIOR HIGH MISSION TRIP UPDATE June 22 through July 1, the senior high youth traveled to New Orleans, LA to work for SBP in St. Bernard s Parish. It was in East New Orleans. We worked on two houses that were damaged in the February 2017 tornado. On one house we smoothed out the drywall mud and on the other house we installed insulation and drywall. On our fun day we worshipped at St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square and explored the French Quarter. For dinner we had authentic Muffulettas from Franks. One evening during the week we took a trolley downtown and the ferry to Algiers Island. Afterwards we enjoyed Beignets at Café du Monde. Our final day we enjoyed a swamp tour and saw lots of alligators. We had 23 youth and 6 adults on the trip. Thank you all for your support and prayers! Hear more about our trip on August 19 during all church services.
