Times Of Worship SUNDAYS 8:30am Traditional Service 9:45am Praise Worship 11:00am Traditional Service THE PASTOR S PEN Dear friends, We just concluded a series of interesting meetings with a fairly diverse group of our members. Some were long timers, several were newer to the church. There was a mixture of more progressive thinkers, middle-of-the-roaders and traditional folks. Our task? To develop a statement that welcomes people to our church. We understand that people come from all walks of life. We wanted them all to feel that they can have a church home here. The hope is that the statement will be posted to our church website and printed where appropriate. Worship Schedule for June, 2018 Post-It notes from God June 3 Remember: Let the Bible be a help, not a hindrance. June 10 (Laity Sunday) June 17 Remember: When God measures a person, God measures the heart. June 24 Remember: You and God are unstoppable. They worked hard and, after numerous meetings, came up with a statement they recommended to church council. They compromised, had good discussion around welcoming issues and crafted a statement they believe will work in our congregation as well as communicate pretty well outside the church. This is what they decided upon: We welcome everyone seeking a spiritual home. We are an inclusive and safe community that values unconditional love. We embrace diversity and strive to live in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ. That is a strong statement that is designed to let anybody and everybody who is looking for a church home know that they are welcome at First UMC. Of course, it is too long to use as a motto or slogan. And too long to fit on our outside signage. So a much shorter version will still be needed. The group also proposed that individual members of the church write their own short welcome, extending the hand of friendship using whatever language they choose, and that we post some of these on our website alongside the official statement. Of course, actions speak louder than words, don t they? And I want you to know that I regularly hear from visitors to our church that they experience our congregation as extremely warm and welcoming. Good work! It s one thing to say we welcome everybody, and another to actually do it. You are doing it well. As always, it is a joy working with you! Rev. Steve Rev. Steve Goodier Page 2

FUMC NEWS MISSION STARTS AT HOME Do you have a household project that is too much for you to tackle? Do you need a helping hand on your important must do list? There are volunteers from our church that would love to help you out with anything from cleaning a garage, washing windows, mopping floors or yard work. The Mission Committee is starting to take request for people who truly need assistance. Please contact Julie Monroe at newmonroe1@yahoo.com and we will begin to prioritize the needs of our church family. Please give your name, phone number and or , plus the project you need a help with. FUN AT THE FOOTE LAGOON Our church is hosting a table again this year during the Foote Lagoon Concerts June 21 - July 26. It s a wonderful way to meet and serve our neighbors in the community while enjoying the concerts. Grab your blue church t-shirt and help pass out water. Volunteers are also needed to setup and breakdown the canopy and table and re-label the water bottles. Signup sheets are available at the Ask Me Desk. If you have questions, contact Norma Flaming at norma_flaming@yahoo.com. RECALL THE EXCITEMENT OF OUR GUATEMALA MISSION TEAMS? FUMC will have the opportunity to make another group mission trip to Guatemala in 2019! Working again with Pura Vida as our trip sponsor. International mission trips are meaningful, insightful, and build long-term relationships with fellow missioners and third world communities. This will be our fourth trip to Guatemala and each time becomes more and more rewarding. If you step out of your comfort zone for a week, you will be amazed what can happen. Join us on Sunday, June 3 at 1:00 pm in West Coy Hall for a question and answer session. We will share impressions of prior trips and plans for a construction trip February 9-17, For questions prior to the meeting, contact Keith Flaming at (970) AT FUMC WE SAY WE RE A FAMILY I REALLY know what that means. It doesn t mean greeting one another at Sunday service. It doesn t mean membership in FUMC. I know what being a family means because I ve been carried in that love for the past three weeks. Folks I ve never met at Sunday service or through other FUMC relationships have showed up to convey me to the doctor, to the grocery store, to assist with computer difficulties, to check in by phone or in person or simply to remind me that This, too, shall pass. (I m not a patient person). My experience is an echo of the earliest Christian connections when they met (in secret) to care for one another. At FUMC, the past is the present. I embrace it with gratitude and will pass it on. ~ Sue Mullins Page 3

FUMC NEWS The Reentry Initiative Update PROGRAM UPDATE TRI is thrilled to introduce Joan DeJong as our new Volunteer Coordinator! Joan received training in the management of volunteer programs from the University of Colorado and served as the Director of the Colorado Springs Pregnancy Center for five years. She also served as Director of Women s Ministries at Woodman Valley Chapel in Colorado Springs and on the board of a Christian school. Joan and her husband, Cliff, have been married for 40 years and have a blended family of five grown children and nine grandchildren. They are active at LifeBridge Church here in Longmont and thoroughly enjoying retirement. TRI is so blessed to have Joan join us and use her gifts, experience, and wisdom. Welcome aboard, Joan! EXPANDING OUR REACH Since January, TRI has responded to over 60 inquires from case managers and offenders alike who have shown interest in our various programs! We have directly assisted over 12 women with day of release transportation, backpacks, food, identification, phone cards, bus passes, and clothing. We continue to be very grateful for all our supporters who make this happen! PARTNER NEWS The Longmont Parole and Reentry Office and TRI partnered to celebrate the Department of Corrections Reentry Week. Thirty returning citizens were gifted with a goodie bag and $5 gift card. We are so grateful for our collaboration to ensure that returning citizens are set up for success. Thank you to the following faith community partners: UCC-Longmont for co-hosting our Felon Next Door event which raised over $2000 for TRI. Longs Peak United Methodist Church and Niwot United Methodist Church who have coordinated a Meal Train for our housing residents, where congregants rotate on providing homecooked meals to our ladies. Longs Peak UMC Worship Committee also has made a Mother s Day financial donation to TRI! Central Presbyterian Church has not only gifted us with financial support but has formed a Criminal Justice CENTRALcircle, a group that aims to provide not only support to TRI and our clients, but to add a social justice component to their outreach efforts and conversations. WHY TRI CAMPAIGN COMING SOON! This month we will be unveiling powerful statements from those closest to TRI about why this organization is important to them and this community. We call it, Why TRI. We encourage you to share these stories with others as they explain the true meaning of ensuring that returning citizens are given a second chance in our community. (Reentry Initiative, continued on next page) Page 4

FUMC NEWS FELON NEXT DOOR EVENT UPDATE Thank you to all our TRI supporters and friends in the Longmont community who came out to join us as we co-hosted an inspiring event with UCC-Longmont. The evening included presentations from women who have successfully reintegrated after incarceration and a mentor who told us not only about how she got involved with mentoring and what it has meant to her, but she also gifted us with her music! This event was made by possible by an In the Mud Grant from the Rocky Mountain Conference of the UCC. Visit fnd/ to learn more about this event and to RSVP. SAFETY NET Living alone has some perks, you eat when and what you want. You set the time for going to bed and getting up. You have control of the remote. You are the boss (well, unless your pet is a cat.) Living alone also has some drawbacks. What if you re ill? What if the kids are out of town? What if you fall? We re starting a telephone line at our church to help a little with the anxiety of senior living. We can t solve problems but we can establish a safety net. If you are part of the safety net you will receive a telephone call each morning to make sure you re okay. You will than call a person each morning to check on their well being. If this is of interest to you please sign up at the Ask Me Desk. There is no limit on the number of participants. There are no restrictions. You don t have to be single. We ll start June 10 with the list available at that time and can add more names at any time. Please call Kay Neckel at with any questions. For the additional protection of senior citizens, the Loveland Police Department has a program to put a lock box at your home with a house key inside. This allows emergency personnel entrance to your home without damage to a door or window. If you are interested in this option, call Officer Sloat at FINANCIAL REPORT from Mary Hannon BUDGET PERFORMANCE REPORT: January - April 2018 FROM: THE BUSINESS MANAGER S OFFICE Total Actual Income $244, Total Actual Expenses $225, Total Expense Budget $227, Full Total for 2018 Budget $681, THANK YOU! Thank you for the offerings you have made and are making to our church. Your offerings of your time, of your God-given talents, and of your money, help support all that we do at First United Methodist Church Loveland. Page 5

CHILDREN S MINISTRY SUNDAY SCHOOL The Family Outreach & Event committee has decided that we will not hold traditional Sunday school during the summer due travel schedules and an opportunity for our teachers to have a rest. We would like to continue some children s activities for this summer. If you would be interested in working with our elementary aged children in some way on Sunday mornings, please contact Ann Kessler at akessler@fumcloveland.com or (970) We are growing and in need of more Sunday school teachers for next year. If you are interested in teaching, we specifically need preschool/kindergarten and elementary teachers and shepherds. Contact Ann Kessler at (970) or akessler@fumcloveland.com. THANK YOU TRUSCOTT STUDENT LEADER VOLUNTEERS This spring the Truscott Student Leaders and two teachers came over to do community service for our church to show the appreciation of Truscott for all FUMC does for them. They organized a closet in the Youth Range, sorted and filed bulletin board borders, and cleaned and replanted the flower bed near the FUMC sign on the northeast corner of our property. Page 8 YOUTH QUEST 2018 This year our middle schoolers went to the Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista. They had a great time in fellowship and learning the words and actions of welcoming people. They took workshops to help their faith and had fun singing to the band each day. Ella Berdahl was on core this year and helped to plan and run the event. She did an excellent job. Mariah Diediker, Ben Clegern, Erick Robinson, and Lauryn Simon also went to help in the kitchen.
