3 Welcome Dear Brother Knight, Congratulations on joining our order and a very active Council! You have become a member of the largest fraternal Catholic men s organization in the world. You now have close to two million brother Knights to call on should you or a family member need assistance. The St. Therese Council is one of the most active councils in the state. As a Brother Knight you have before you the opportunity to become involved with activities and fund raisers geared towards our church, community, youth, families and St. Therese K of C council. I encourage you to become active in our council. The more you put into the Knights of Columbus the more you will get out of it. The best way to start is to attend our monthly business meetings on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month starting at 8pm. Look at the list of committees at the end of this document. We know your already busy and the number of our activities may seem overwhelming. It isn t! Get some information on some committee or fund drive and aim to just participate in that one thing to start. I can guarantee that you will be happy that you did. Your thoughts and efforts in the meetings and during the events will be valued, and it is a great way for you to get to know your brother knights. Our insurance field agent, Guy Mariani, will contact you shortly. Please give this gentleman a few minutes of your time. He will explain to you all the benefits you are entitled to as a Knight of Columbus. He will also explain some other opportunities you may wish to take advantage of as a Knight. It is important to note that the purchase of insurance is NOT mandatory and you will not be pressured to participate. I strongly encourage you to advance in your degrees. Full knighthood is achieved with the completion of the third degree. You are welcome to participate in almost all the council events regardless of your degree, but you must be a third-degree member to hold office in either an elected or appointed position. Congratulations again on making one of the best decisions you could make in your life. We look forward to hearing your input and seeing you at one of our many activities in the near future. This handbook should answer most of your questions, but feel free to contact myself or any of the officers, if you should have any questions. Vivat Jesus, David Reinknecht Grand Knight 2

4 Degree Information Second and Third Degrees All brothers who are current with paying their dues are eligible to participate in degrees. The membership committee, or your sponsor or mentor will notify you when the degrees are scheduled. There is no required time limit between the first and second or second and third degrees, but we encourage all new Knights to achieve their 3 rd degree as soon as possible. The third degree almost always takes place on a Friday night. It is recommended that you study the book These Men Called Knights prior to attending the third degree. The required dress for the first, second and third degrees is jacket and tie. It is customary for the brother Knight that recruited you to accompany you to your degrees. Please let him know that you are attending one of the degrees. He will want to go with you. You must have your current membership card with you indicating your degree status. Fourth Degree This is an additional and optional degree, known as the patriotic degree. It is usually held twice a year. Members of the St. Therese Council are eligible to become fourth degree Knights as long as they have achieved status as a third-degree Knight. Members of our Coucil participate in the fourth degree, as a member of the Monsignor Lange Assembly.
