1 June 2018 SFX Knights Newsletter St. Francis Xavier the Missionary Council # In Service to One, In Service to All Council Meetings held at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday 7:00 P.M Newtowne Neck Road, Compton, MD Grand Knight s Report June 2018 Our Spring Breakfast (May 20 th ) went great! We had so much help that our workload was low and we were able to enjoy the morning. Although we had our regular breakfast stuff, which is always good, John Boy Morgan cooked up some potatoes and onions that people were raving about. John, you may have gooned yourself! Thanks also go to John Breck for bringing homecooked Sausage Gravy and to James Morgan for slaving over that hot grill in the blazing sun. And I m grateful to all those that cooked eggs and pancakes so I didn t have to. There was a special event afterward: some of the wives took advantage of the gathering to get together to make a Philippino dish called lumpia (and maybe have a wee bit of wine). Thanks Margo Holton for hosting that. We raised some funds for the Pastoral Council Center (they are the group that worked with the kids at Great Mills HS following the shooting). Thanks to everyone that helped with the breakfast: Jeannie, James, John, and George Morgan, Don, Paula and Anitra McLeod, (John) Wesley Hill, Bob Bowles, John Breck, Dr Dan Geary, Herb Male, Mike DeManss, Richard Harrell, Paul Roman, Jonathan Lowe, and Dale Rebarchick. Congratulations to our two new officers: Herb Male will take over as Advocate, and Paul Roman will take over as Inside Guard (1). And along those lines I have good/bad news. Big Jim Berned will become

2 the new District Warden working alongside Bob Bowles who will become the new District Deputy. Congratulations to them both but we lose Big Jim s expertise as Program Director. We need a replacement please give it some thought. No doubt you ve seen the MD State Convention Awards our council won at Ocean City earlier this month. We did so well because we have a great team of Knights that are willing to work and work hard: Jim Berned (Program Director), Mike DeManss (Membership), Don McLeod (Culture of Life), Dale Rebarchick (Church Activities), James Morgan (Community Activities), John Breck (Family Activities), Jimmy Berned (Youth Activities), and George Morgan (Council Activities). Well we wanted it and now we have it: full on summer! With summer comes travel and Father s Day (June 17 th ). Be safe. Fraternally, SK Mike Holton, Grand Knight Council #10957 Chaplain s Report Knights of Columbus Chaplain s Reflection June 2018 Dear Brother Knights, It s a great joy to have Fr. Charles Connor from Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Emmitsburg Maryland give our parish mission (retreat) beginning on June 6 th and culminating on the Feast of the Sacred Heart on Friday, June 8 th. I m very grateful to have the Knights of Columbus present at the Mass on that Friday and for hosting the reception immediately after. It is an added blessing to have the original statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that once adorned our church, now restored and returned to its original place in our sanctuary for the feast of the Sacred Heart on Friday, June 8 th. With all that in mind, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The story begins with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque ( ), who was well known as the religious sister whose revelations helped to spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Jesus revealed to

3 her that the chief features of this devotion would be reception of Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, Eucharistic adoration during a "Holy hour" on Thursdays (to meditate on Jesus Agony in the Garden), and the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart. In an apparition Our Lord said these words to St. Margaret Mary: "Look at this Heart which has loved men so much, and yet men do not want to love Me in return. Through you My divine Heart wishes to spread its love everywhere on earth." In the apparitions to St. Margaret Mary, Our Lord gave these twelve promises to all who are devoted to His Sacred Heart: 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will establish peace in their families. 3. I will console them in all their troubles. 4. They shall find in My Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of their death. 5. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings. 6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source of an infinite ocean of mercy. 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection. 9. I will bless the homes where an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored. 10. I will give to priests the power of touching the most hardened hearts. 11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be effaced. 12. The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under my displeasure, nor without receiving their

4 Sacraments; My heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour. These promises are worth pondering, especially as we prepare for Fr. Connor s upcoming retreat on devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. May these promises inspire us to be the men that God created us to be: men on fire with the love of Christ. I m reminded of a great contemporary Christian song by Third Day called, Soul on Fire : The lyrics go something like this: God, I'm running for Your heart I'm running for Your heart Till I am a soul on fire Lord, I'm longing for Your ways I'm waiting for the day When I am a soul on fire Till I am a soul on fire St. Catherine of Siena once said: Be the person God created you to be and you will set the world on fire. I want to thank everyone for their support during this past Fraternal Year. Our new Faithful Navigator will be SK Nick Powers. Father Andrew White Assembly #377 District Deputy s Report My Brothers As my term as District Deputy comes to an end, I wish to thank you for making me feel welcome at your council, thank you for strong friendships developed through the Knights of Columbus and I look forward to continued participation in charitable activities around the county with you. Take this time to reflect on the differences you have made over the past two years: purchased tablets for use at the Carenet Pregrancy

7 Centers, donated basic supplies to merchant seaman stranded on their ship in the Baltimore harbor, donated water and clothing to the people in Puerto Rico, sustained the piggery in Africa to assist Fr Boniface and his seminarians and finally, we are supporting the young men in our communities that are contemplating the priesthood. This was above and beyond the good work you do within your own council and parish. The need for our work never ends. Likewise, your efforts to recruit more young men to join in your activities must go on as well. They are out there, just ask! Make a difference in their life, it will make a difference in your as well. One Knight can make a difference, every member counts.
