1 P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E Well, after some lovely fall weather, winter seems to have arrived this morning. Keep safe, everyone, as we get into the ice and snow season. We had a very interesting meeting in November, on bullying, with SuEllen Fried. Times are certainly different now with cyber bullying and the increase of girls participating in these horrible activities. Our thanks to Shirley Wagner for arranging the meeting. As I write this, we are remembering where we were 50 years ago when Pres. John Kennedy left us. I later joined the Peace Corps and will always be grateful for that experience. I am so glad he provided that vehicle for me to experience a wonderful 2 years in Malaysia. I hope to see many of you at the Holiday Tea on December 15. It is always a pleasant afternoon, seeing so many friends. In February, we will have what promises to be a very interesting brunch with the Kansas City, Mo. branch and the League of Women Voters at the Community Christian Church on the Plaza. The topic is voter suppression, which is a real issue for There is no charge for this event. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season. That is 7,000 more or a 37% increase in the number from The incidence of rape or assault in the military is almost double the rate in the civilian population. Even worse in conflict zones, half of the women serving

4 in Iraq or Afghanistan have reported sexual harassment with nearly one in four reporting sexual assault. This problem has persisted within the military for decades with commanders determining the outcome of cases of people under their command. The AAUW Action Network is encouraging members to take action to increase awareness of sexual assault within the military and to communicate concerns to our Senators to force change in this system. The Senate continues to debate an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 (S.1197). Within this amendment is a proposal that would change the current system for handling these crimes. It s time to remove the crime of military sexual assault from the chain of command and give this authority to an independent and impartial body.
